A Kelty Sunshade is a quick and easy-to-setup shelter that protects you, friends, and family from the sun when you're partying outdoors. The Sunshade has continuous pole sleeves for smooth setup, guy-out points for stability, and taped seams for waterproof protection. It also features variable height and width adjustment for custom sun protection.
Bottom Line: At the beach, campsite, park, or in the backyard, the Sunshade's got you covered.
After researching all available sunshades which are large enough for 6 or more adults, we bought this one. The size is great. As you might imagine, it's basically a sail with some tie downs, and high winds one night destroyed our first shelter. this site replaced it under warranty so this time we will be extra careful to take it down if there's any chance of winds more than say 30 mph.
One one river trip we wound up with 10 adults + 10 kids all huddled (yes it was crowded!) under this shelter to avoid persistent downpours. It paid for itself that one time - we would have been miserable without it.
I use my large sunshade for auto/motorcycle camping. It performs very well. I set it up first and have shade or rain protection for setting up the rest of my camp, down last for the same reason.
I did experience a problem with a pole breaking on my second use - one of the fiberglass sections split down the middle. Kelty turned it around in 2 weeks and everything is good.
We were pleasantly surprised by how easy and inexpensive it was to order and receive the Kelty sunshade (less than a week). We have two small children so we ordered the large sunshade for our trip to the beach. It took two of us to set it up in the morning but after that we were able to stay out on the beach all day. The kids played and napped in the shade while my husband and I enjoyed the view and time with each other. We also had a few people on the beach who were curious and envious of our sunshade. Very pleased!!
We spent two weeks on the (sometimes) windy beaches on Nantucket this summer. The Kelty Sunshade (large) was a big hit, providing plenty of protection from the sun. We have a 15-month-old daughter, and the Sunshade provided a great place for naps and snacks out of the sun. Also, I'm 6'3", and the Sunshade allows full standing headroom. Great gear at a great price. Setup is easiest with two people, but after a little practice I could do it alone in about 5-6 minutes.
I was looking for something to cover a picnic table, read under, eat under, etc. I've tried screen tents and traditional style canopies and have never liked the weight. I was also looking for something with better sun and rain protection than a traditional square table canopy. The Kelty Sunshade (Large) fit the bill perfectly. It is much larger than it appears in the photo. Because the size is adjustable by moving the legs together it can easily be used as a table canopy providing good headroom. Because of its unique design it provides great shade even when the sun is low in the sky. I also liked moving it away from the table and using it as a large sitting area. The fact that you can change the height and coverage just by moving the legs makes it fantastically versatile. It comes in a great tent bag and the poles and pegs each have their own bags. Great construction, and very lightweight. I bet the medium size could even be backpacked with. The only down side is that bugs tend to get stuck in the top of the thing. But then again, what don't bugs get stuck in when you're camping?
The canopy was great, although its hard to manage in gusty conditions. I recommend larger stakes for beach use. Challenging to set up in gusty conditions, but once anchored in place it is excellent. Its very low profile provides good privacy.
Even in the strong winds of a South Carolina beach, it kept us in the shade. At times, it did lean to the side in the high gusts, but never blew away. It covered a stroller, two bouncer chairs, a blanket for toddlers, and two chairs. There is no way we could have stayed on the beach without it.
So happy to have my Large Kelty Sunshade. We have a little bit of trouble with the poles for some reason. I have more than once had to send them back to Kelty for repair. That has always been a good experience, fast and easy. I, of course, would rather it never happened. Overall, the Sunshade is great.
The Kelty Sunshade works as advertised. I have had many requests from fellow campers to see up close the Sunshade. Most agree the Sunshade is more convenient and easy to use than conventional shade systems. The Sunshade has stood through two large T-storms thus far with no negative consequences. I will be taking the Sunshade to Florida this fall for use on the beach, and I expect the Sunshade will perform flawlessly. Kelty keeps me coming back.
I've seen these at Festivals for a long time and always wanted one. The shade is easy to set up (I'm 5'3" and can do it myself) after you figure out what to do. It's wind and rain resistant. I bought mine last month and used it as a "beer garden" in my yard for a party I had. I even set up a mister inside it! Then I took it to Rocky Grass to provide extra shade and protection in our camping area. The Large Sunshade will easily cover a couple tents and still allow an open (upright) space for you to enter into after leaving your tent. The sunshade will be perfect for rainy festivals! Also, it's stores easily and is fairly lightweight. My only complaint is that there is no shoulder strap on the carrying bag - so you might want to order a separate bag to store/carry it in. I'm very pleased with my purchase - and someone told me I paid much less on this site than the sticker price at a famous outdoors sports chain!
We absolutely love every aspect of the Large Kelty Sunshade. The moment we got it, we had to try it out. It takes all of five minutes to put up, and is very sturdy when the wind comes up...even without putting the stakes in! Our soccer team loves it for weekend tournaments and we are enjoying it as our eating area while camping. We get tons of compliments on it also! Worth every penny.
Picked up one of these prior to vacation at the Outer Banks (Corolla) this year (Aug 2006) to use in place of our umbrella that broke from the wind gusts last year. Needed a shady place for our 9 month old to play on the beach. Setup & takedown were a snap. It is best to use 2 people as the poles will snag occasionally on the mesh sleeves. Found it easiest to leave on the ground while inserting the poles and have the 2nd person lift the opposing side off the ground a little when inserting the poles into their grommets. The Sunshade held up surprisingly well to the wind gusts on the beach. I double staked the 3 corners and sand bag weighted them for extra strength. Sand bags can be made fairly inexpensively from nylon & draw cords if you can sew. I didn't bother with extra guy wires until the wind really kicked up one day. Then used one of the middle ones to keep the winded side from collapsing. Although the wind would occasionally flex one of the poles inward, it always bounced back after it passed. Shade amount was very adequate for 2 adults, beach cart, baby, and golden retriever. The height adjustability is a nice feature. You can easily stand in the main area, but will have to duck to enter/exit. Be sure to have plenty of room when setting up and inserting the poles. They are quite long and will hit things or people. Plan to use the sunshade camping and for other outdoor events. Had originally planned to get the smaller one until the sale that dropped the price of the large one = small one. Several umbrella users inquired when I had purchased the sunshade. I'm quite pleased with the purchase!
I took this to Moab in April when it was super hot and it brought down the temp really well. It was high enough to hang out under and wide enough to put over any picnic table. This is the car camping must have. It looks big but it's so easy to set up, I set it up alone a couple times on the trip. Plenty of space for any outing. It was also really windy throughout the night and it didn't flip around like it looks like it would.
I have had my sunshade for 10 years and it's still one of my favorite pieces of gear. Its height and ground coverage are adjustable offering a variety of solutions to differing wind and weather. It's not for backpacking as it weighs in at over 12 lbs but it's proven indispensable for winter fishing/camping/summer family trips. The shelter has guy loops (includes cords) on each of three sides that allow you to choose the best rig for the wind and rain direction / intensity. Its dome design allows it to give, absorb wind load and still provide excellent coverage in the worst of wind and rain. We've weathered many a snow or rain storm while still being able to cook and eat under the shelter (we've comfortably sheltered as many as six adults in a severe rain storm). The poles, sleeves and covering have proven to be durable, breathable and fast drying. After 10 years (25 days/year) of hard use, mainly in the winter, it still has yet to leak a drop. Incidentally it allows two stakes per corner for redundant anchoring.
Its size is perfect to completely cover a concrete picnic table, like those generally encountered in NFS areas, and still allow an ample sitting area for two. It has saved many a trip and it's well worth the money.
Nice shelter to stay out of the rain on an extended car camping trip. Also, contrarily to a tarp, it easy to move out of the way if you want more light. Setting up and taking down was easy, but make sure you have enough room because the poles are long and heavy (fiberglass). I definitely recommend this piece of gear.
The Sunshade is roomy, easy to set up with the usual bit of practice, waterproof, and pretty wind resistant when all tie downs are in place. First use was on a windy, rainy weekend and it worked great.
