Keen calls its Women’s Targhee II Mid Hiking Shoe “four wheel drive for your feet,” and they weren’t lyin’—you’ll feel downright mountain goat-ish with these grippy carbon rubber outsoles. A little mountain storm won’t slow you down either; KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable outer membranes spare your feet in the event of a little splish-splashing. A protective toe cap makes painful toe-stubbing a thing of the past, and an S3 heel support structure keeps you feeling light on your hooves—er, feet—all through the day’s hike.
Bottom Line: Durable and resilient to fit right in with the mountain landscape.
I got mine about three weeks ago and went with a full size larger than my normal shoe size. The toe bumper hurts my toes! If I went any larger there would be major heel slippage. I am afraid to do any hikes that would require big downhill sections in these shoes. Also I used them for work for 2 weeks in mesquite/salt cedar riparian areas. The mesquite tore off alarmingly large chunks of the sole, making it look like it was made of styrofoam. I would not recommend these shoes if you live in the southwest or a thorny place. I am thinking of returning them, if I still can.
After a multitude of training hikes i set out on the JMT last Sept in some Vasques...after day three they were tied to my pack like paper weights and I was hiking in my trail runners/camp sneakers. I tossed the Vasques the first opportunity I had and got my mom to send in a pair of Keens with my food resupply (with a bad ankle, trail runners were not a long term option). Without breaking them in at all, the Keens were comfortable, dry and blister free from the first step to the last some 150 miles later! I was more than impressed with the boots performance and comfort and will be sporting them on all my future hikes to come. I had my mom (with the same size feet) try them on with normal sock and then buy a half of a size up to accommodate foot swelling and it worked out just right. For normal wear i would say they fit true to size.
On keenfootwear.com it states that the Targhees are endowed with the Keen-Dry waterproofing system, but in reading reviews, some state they weren't waterproof at all! Should I believe the reviews, or were they just written by silly people?
skeptical about ordering online after reading some of the reviews about sizing. NO WORRIES...they fit perfect out of the box. wore them hiking ...no break in time, no sore spots. TOTALLY waterproof, clean up well too after mud. ONLY thing that could be different....shoe laces need to be longer, I like to double knot my laces and it can be done but it's difficult.
These are comfortable boots. I've had 2 pairs over 2 years. But I'm giving up now that the soles seem to wear out on a yearly basis; in fact in my last pair both soles came unglued catastrophically and simultaneously while going down a skree slope in Wyoming. Luckily I had some duct tape, but that should just not happen. KEEN needs to pony up and get some Vibram soles, or else just use better glue. Anyway if you wear your boots hard, I would not recommend these. If you just need some comfortable boots for occasional hiking, these are fine.
These boots are so comfortable! I didn't completely immerse them in water but they did get wet and my feet stayed completely dry. I wore them hiking Mt. Whitney after wearing them only once for a few hours and my feet felt great. Not one hot spot or blister anywhere. Wonderful arch support too. I'm very happy with them!
Bought these Keens Targhee after sending back Lowas that were too tight. I was advised to go a half size larger by the live chat customer service so I went with an 8.5. These are great shoes. Nice wide toe box, comfortable from the first time you put them on. I wear these shoes around the yard working and walking my dogs down tractor trails between fields. Very stable and good traction. I've walked 5 miles every evening, through wet grass and my feet stayed dry and comfortable. I didn't think I'd like the rubber toe bumper, but I actually love it. I'll be getting another pair.
These are extremely comfortable for long hikes. I didn't get any blisters or sore spots whatsoever. The toe box is pretty wide with enough wiggle room for the toes, very comfortable for people with wide feet. These are by far the best hiking boots I have ever worn and I will continue to buy this model in the future! I highly recommend that you try a pair!
I have a pair of Keens summer shoes, which I bought after my sister raved about hers and so when I was looking for something to use for snowshoeing and this model had so many raves, I had to go for it. About 10 minutes into my outing my insteps were screaming; I almost took the boots off and risked frostbite. Also, the Men'sTarghees were listed as waterproof, but apparently the Women's version is not.
Super comfy & supportive. I wore them on an uphill hour hike the 1st night I got them, and I didn't get a single blister...then I wore them again the next day for a longer hike. They rock!
My husband has these shoes and convinced me that I needed a pair for our trail hiking adventures together. I got a pair from backcountry after trying them on at a local retailer to see how they fit. I've had them less than a month, worn them half a dozen times hiking already, and love them! They give the security you need on rock trails and ankle support for rooted trails. All that, and I saved $35!
I love these boots. I just got back from a walk down a steep dirt trail and thought to myself, "my feet feel so good in these boots" as they gripped the earth and snug but comfortable around my feet. As far as being happy over clothing goes, these are great!
This is my second pair of Keen boots. I have the Voyageur Mid also. No need to break them in, I hiked for miles the first time in them. The Targhee are a little bit stiffer than the Voyageurs, however, and seemed tighter on the instep. Still no problem. I don't know how they do it. I think they must take a mold of my foot while I sleep and conform the boot to my specifications. One other minor prob, the laces in the Targhee were very short!
