Hiking long trails takes lots of gear and sturdy footwear like the KEEN Men’s Oregon PCT Hiking Boot. This burly leather boot includes a full-length TPU plate to give you all the support for carrying a 60-pound pack. A KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable insert keeps your feet nice and dry when it starts pouring rain on day six of your trip. KEEN used a combination of leather and synthetic materials to make the upper tough enough for serious trails with enough flexibility to keep you going for miles and miles.
Bottom Line: The support and weather protection you need.
This boot is the best of both worlds. It is waterproof, well built (with a good toe box), warm enough to wear in winter, but has enough ventilation to use in summer. They are comfortable right out of the box, and I've been pleased with other Keen products. True to size for me. The footbed is well above average in terms of support, and the construction seems better than most (especially Merrill's). I see no reason to dock any stars from a five star rating.
Very nice boot. I shopped around for weeks looking at reviews and prices. I tried the all popular Asos GTX fugitive at the local REI and found it to be nice but super stiff. I took a chance on this boot because it was on sale here for $127.00 and ordered the 11. I wear 10.5 to 11 depending on the company. The boot is true to size in my opinion and the toe box is roomy for swelling and sock thickness without allowing slop. I wear smartwool socks like a religious zealot because they do breath in all weather conditions. I have worn a thin hiking sock and a heavy hiking sock for multi hour hikes while geocaching in my area. I found the boot to be very strong, supportive, and comfy almost immediately. Today I crossed a stream with water rolling over the top and never felt a drop. I give it 4 out of 5 because I have not owned them long enough to know the longevity of the boot, but I have confidence they will last. Nor, have I backpacked with a load, while wearing them. Finally, they look cool and not over the top goofy.
These actually fit, I have not had a boot that fits my feet in years. No blisters to report, finally. Decent support. Comfortable but noticed they do not breathe well. At the end on day the inside boot liner is pretty damp, I had worn a liner and heavier sock.
Great boot, with great support, great style, and true to size. I have a wider foot at a size 12 and the 12 fits great. I wouldn't say that the boot is ready to hike out of the box, but even after two hikes, it is easy to see that the boot won't take much to break in. Hiking in a heavy dew was no problem. The boot was waterproof, but I have yet to test it out in a heavy rain and/or hiking through puddles and real wet terrain. Im sure it will hold up just fine!
I have been sopping for a good hiking boot for about a month now. I have gone through two pairs of vasque (breeze, and wasatch) in which the goretex in both of them tore. I need a comfortable boot due to my heel spurs that can take punishment. By punishment I mean rocks, sand , mud, and most importantly water. I am so tired of getting boots anfd paying the money for waterproof only to find out later that they are just really water resisitant. I have tried goretex, merrell waterproof, and all other types. I want something that if I stand in water or I am hiking during a rain storm that wil keep my feet dry with no leaks. My question is can keen do this fpor me? Straght up no frills, just tough and 100% waterproof.
These boots are great! Fit true to size and wider in the toe box which gives me more room for a heavier sock. So far a great boot for hiking or just running around town.
I bought these boots for my husband for christmas.
He loved them, wore them for two weeks and one of the ties guides or whatever you call them broke off.. Can return them but cant replace them as they are no longer available. Not happy at all.
Would these boots be appropriate for summer backpacking, will they breathe? Also, is the waterproof keen dry part built into the boot, or is it a separate bootie? Thanks.
Should be appropriate for summer hiking, as Keen Dry does have breathing/vapor releasing capabilities. Keen Dry is a membrane built into the boot. Theses are also equipped with a moisture wicking lining. If you're doing quicker hiking with a lighter load check out the Keen Voyageur Mid hiking shoe, it has more mesh on the sides then the Oregon PCT.
The Keen Dry insert is between the outer leather layer and the inner sock layer, so it is not a seperate bootie. Yes these would be appropriate for summer backpacking, I would suggest wearing a lightweight sock though.
I too, found my right boot leaked and a lot more than than the left. During a rare down pour here in southern NV., I was five miles from camp with hail and rain, by the time I got back, my right foot was pretty wet and the left boot was letting in some water. I ended up spraying the heck out of them with Nikwax. I have a pair of Vasque Breeze's that have never let water in.
Second, the boots don't breathe very well, kind of hot for desert hiking.
The Good News: Break-in took no time at all, large toe box doesn't crush your toes. Excellent support and light weight.
I thought I'd share my experiences with my Keen Oregon PCTs.
First impression: Out of the box I was quite pleased with the look of the boots. After trying them on for the first time with a medium weight keen wool sock, I was happy with the snugness, comfort and apparent quality of the boot. The boot is solid and sturdy with good traction and I felt secure in the boot. The wear so far after two months is hardly noticeable. Breathability: Is questionable. I started wearing the boot in January and my feet were always warm and even found that they sweat a little. This leads me to wonder how they will be in summer. Waterproofness: These boots for me were unfortunately *not* waterproof. After walking through a significant amount of water for only a short period of time, I found that my right boot had water seeping into the toe. Keen uses their own KEEN.DRY waterproofing material which is sown it into the sole of the boot. It appeared as if the water came in through the breathable material in the toe and seeped into stitching where the KEEN.DRY meets the sole. Sufficed to say I had a wet foot on the way home. Drawbacks: At first when I tied my laces tightly and articulated my ankles or moved into a crouch, I strongly felt the laces through the tongue on my ankles. However, after two months of breaking them in, this has mostly passed. Also, a pet peeve of mine is I must always double knot my laces. Otherwise they will always inevitably come loose. Lastly for a time the plastic supporting the right heel of my right boot seemed to of shifted and was painfully digging into my ankle until it either moved once more or my ankle stopped noticing. Conclusion: I'm not yet ready to give up on the Keen Oregon PCT. I will return my current pair to be replaced and cross my fingers that I simply received a bad apple. Here's hoping.
I normally where a 10.5 in a shoe. I wear a 10.5 in Keen Newports and Kenn Austins. My last pair of hiking boots was an 11.0 to allow for heavyweight Smartwool socks. Should I bee looking at a 10.5 or an 11.0 in these?
Great boot but tends to get a little hot in the spring/summer, unbelievably waterproof and comfortable on the roughest trails i have encountered, i also summited Adams with these 2 times and they look like new.
Really nice ankle support compared to the other Keen Hiking boots. Unfortunately after about 5 miles or so on level terrain my 3rd toe on both feet began to hurt, after a day or so the toe nail was completely black and will probably fall off. I think it was the stitch they put down the middle/front part of the boot, that stitch is also on the inside and that was rubbing against my toe nail.
