The Kayland Men’s M11+ Boot features an eVent waterproof breathable liner, as well as Primaloft synthetic insulation to keep your feet warm and dry, whether you’re hanging upside down in a limestone cave or perched 18,000 feet up a foreboding peak. This technical ice and mixed climbing boot builds upon the success of its predecessor, the M11, to which Rock and Ice gave its Best In Gear award to in 2007. An integrated gaiter blocks ice and rocks, and keeps your pants from riding up during difficult, overhung dry tooling. A full-length TPU midsole gives the M11+ the rigidity you need for frontpointing, and a Vibram Teton sole grips the icy trail on the approach.
Bottom Line: Test the limits of the M-grade with this boot.
Hi, are the M11 boots narrow or wide feet? I bought some Lowa Mountain Expert GTX and they are narrow feed and did not work for me.I am size 12 in running/street shoes, what size do I need?ThanksNando
I'd run with a size 12 in these as well. They fit pretty true to size. These boots are definitely wider than Lowa so you should be good on that portion.Hope that helps.
First tried for long hiking in fall to test approach-ability. Heavy for a hiking boot but light for an ice boot, it hiked like a heavy duty hiking boot. Comfortable, and like all Kaylands, the sole worked well for edging and smearing. On ice, the effecient lacing system allowed me to overtighten and create cold feet. Loosened a bit and was fine. At +10, I wouldn't say they were warm, but they are light boots, not overnighters. On ice then are the most agile and precise, flexible enough for footwork and stiff enough for support. Event lining is equal to GoreTex and the mini-gaiters built-in keeps the snow and water out even after several stream crossings. Never got wet. I found the size to be accurate 10.5 US, but these are a little narrower than my Vertigo High hiking boots. I give two thumbs up. Will slip on supergaiter if it gets too cold. I understand from the name that M11 means mixed, not expedition. I found the sole to be fully rigid but the almost rocker and close fit allowed normal stride for hiking. B.D. and Grivel crampon bails fit without adjustment.
Are the M11+ fully rigid boots? I know that Kayland rates the M11+ a rigidity level 9 (out of 9), but my Kayland Multitraction boots are rated a rigidity level 8 (out of 9) and they are more of a semi-rigid boot. My concern is that the M11+ won't be as rigid as necessary for vertical water ice and mixed climbing. Am I mistaken?
I have both kayland 8 and 9 rigidity boots, and the difference is huge. The eights flex like a heavyduty hikingboot, but the 9 i can barely budge. They are not completely plank, but close (you can flex it somewhat if you really try, but I would say fully rigid.)
How do these boots compare with double boots (i.e Vasque Ice 9000) for warmth for winter mountaineering in the Cascades, Colorado, and the Canadian Rockies?
Put simply, they're descent but if your toes run cold, like mine do, you're better off with a double boot. I've had frostbite too many times racing bikes so my feet always run cold. These boots are warm but not wicked warm. Hope that helps.
