Karhu 7TM Tour Telemark Binding - 2005

In the backcountry, and for that matter the frontcountry, safety is key. The Karhu 7TM Tour Telemark Binding is the only releasable Telemark binding that meets the stringent ISO-DIN safety requirements. This means the 7TM won't pre-release at inconvenient times, but will pop you out just in time to help protect you legs or your entire body from damage from falls and avalanches. The 7TM tour isn't all safety though; it's big on fun. The solid design of the binding gives it a natural riser to carve with and makes it super stable laterally, so you can put full power to your edges. A frictionless pivot ahead of the Tour's toe is awesome for climbing, as is the included climbing wire. When safety and fun in the backcountry are at the top of your list (IE: All the time) the 7TM Tour is the right choice.

Bottom Line: Safe and fun: the perfect backcountry binding.

Although I love these bindings, and the releasable capabilities, I have had snow build up and compact underneath the toe piece. When compacted, it forces me up on my toes and is mildly uncomfortable. Depending on snow conditions, I was cleaning the snow out every run. Fairly annoying.

So far so good. I've gotten 2 days backcountry and 2 days lift serve since mounting them to Black Diamond Crossbows last week. Uphill touring is positively liberating. The heel riser works well too except that in the neutral position it tends to interfere with the heel throw somewhat. Releases have popped twice, both times in deep powder when I was trying to crank a turn. They're still set at DIN 5, so I plan to dial them up a little tighter in the future. Came with easy-to-follow mounting directions.
