You may want to be Seth Morrison when you grow up, but have you ever asked yourself what makes Seth Morrison Seth Morrison? The pro-model ski that blends rocker, underfoot camber, hearty width, and devilish good looks—the K2 ObSETHed Alpine Ski. Take it out on the mountain and find out how you can ski with power and agility in a full spectrum of snow conditions.
A short rocker and standard underfoot camber balance floatation with controllability
A twin tip and tapered shape make it easy to switch between straight and fakie
Progressive sidecut and a tough Vertical ABS Sidewall allow the ski to turn quickly and aggressively
A fat 105mm waist slays the fluff without going haywire on the hardpack
Fir wood core blasts through any conditions and stands up to aggressive skiing
Triaxial braided fiberglass around the wood core adds torsional rigidity without impeding the core’s natural responsiveness
Acid etched tip plates and tail rivets protect the tip and tail… and look really cool
Thinking of getting either the obsethed or the rossignol s7s...if I go with the obsethed what size should I get. I am 5'10 and 140, Im used to riding a 166 salmon foil...need help
You are probably a 169cm ski person. That length will have decent enough float for you, and still be a manageable all-mountain deal. If you want the full powder ski, and want to be aggressive on your skis, you probably could get away with the 179 even, but the 169 really should be good enough. They are slightly longer than posted. As for Rossi vs. ObSETHed, I pick ObSETHed, since it rips hard in the big stuff, and is still easy enough to take anywhere. The S7 kills deeps, but lacks some all-mountain performance comparatively.
I'm really considering buying these skis, however, I'm not sure where I'm going to want to mount my bindings. I ski just about all the time out west in Colorado and Utah, but will also every so often ski the East or Europe. I am thinking about mounting +3. Is that too far? I am a very aggressive skier and I ski some park but mainly freeride/all mountain.
+3 is a really decent mounting point, but personally, I love +2, which gives me lots of tip float, and just feels right for me. I have tried both, ski these super aggressive, and my vote is +2. If you have skied a +3 before and are used to that feeling, try it first.
From the white strip of death at Loveland to the deep powder peaks of Alaska, this is my tool of choice. Through the evolution of this ski the graphics have changed, the skis has gotten wider and rocker has been added. Year after year they get better.
Many people have the misconception that rocker is for "Powder Only". In fact its not, some rocker is made specifically for the deep powder like what you see on a Hellbent or a Pontoon. It doesn't mean those skis with that kind of rocker won't perform well on hard pack. Think of it as your ski is already bent how it would be going through the start of your turn. Rocker makes the ski react slower at the beginning of the turn on hardpack, something you will quickly get used to. K2 has made specific rocker for the skis general use. The amount of rocker on the ObSethed is just enough to give you a catch free edge feel in hardpack and crusty top skins of snow. Also enough to add to flotation initiation in powder.
Seeing its width the ski holds well on firm conditions as in groomers, you can ski bumps, but not the zipper line so much. I make bigger turns and ski the tops where the snow is usually softer out here in the west. If they are firm why bother. This ski is made to be an everyday ski, if it's super deep or you want to ski moguls all the time, you most likely want to have skis tailored for that specific part of skiing.
As for mounting, the ObSethed is 3cms longer than the Pistols and Vicious versions. The rocker is why its this way, since rocker makes a ski, ski shorter. K2 makes their rocker skis a bit longer than what the length actually says. The "traditional" point is where you want to go with if your not into being forward on the ski. After that I would not go more than plus 3 from there if your skiing out west. Most people go with "traditional".
On another note the waist width stays the same on all lengths of the ObSethed, were as other companies get narrower as they get smaller. The core profile is all that changes from the sizes. 189 and 179 are totally different in that respect, think size of the skier and making the ski forgiving for that individual.
That line is weaksauce! Just messing around. I hope to pick up a set of these either this year or the next. Thanks for your time and reviews on here, Seth.
The 179's would be a great all around ski option, for crushin' anything. But if you want pow, and can keep on top of the ski, as in aggressively, then boost up to the 189. Hope you get these though, because they are sick.
This ski is one of the bests on the market.. rented it when i went to snowbird and demoed it up at stratton.. the ski can handle whatever you throw its way and it will perform with ease, it is awesome in powder but is still very fun in the park and on groomers.. here is a pic of my brother riding it out in snowbird
I am 5'10 and 180 lbs with an athletic build. I ski mainly vail, beaver creek and a-basin. I am a very aggressive skier and do a lot of tree skiing as well as side country and the back bowls. For the last few years I was riding the 06 Seths in 179 and i recently bought this years Obsethed in a 189. I am now wondering if this is too big for me to swing around in tight trees and if should switch to the 179's? Any suggestions?
Probably to make it less "hinge like". Now we're starting to see more of a "mini-rocker" story being told by manufacturers, and not that this would fall under 'mini' because I think it's more powder oriented than an all-mountain despite what others might think, something like the Kung Fujas would be more versatile than this. In short, they're trying to make it more versatile which is usually the direct result of athlete feedback. If anyone thinks I'm lying or wants to call me out, go ahead, I don't even ski.
could i throw on a pair of Hammerhead tele bindings on these? Im looking for a off piste twin as im moving out west and thought that these would be a good choice.
I find that they hold up to abuse super well, except the topsheet, which chips like all sandwich construction skis do. They pound through some pretty gnarly conditions, and I use them as my all-mountain/big mountain do almost everything ski. The Shogun is good for powder mostly, and I don't personally like the feel of them when I push them too hard. That might just be me, but I would say that in every category, the ObSETHed wins, with exception to the weight, cause they are a bit on the heavy side.
If you want to mount traditional and just cruize with blats of speed here and there get the 179 but if you want to mount new skool @ true center for BC jib set up and switch charging and just generally aggressive skiing approaching lunacy grab the 189cm ... I ride the 189 and i can literally push it as hard as i want
Height is not always the most important determining factor in what length ski you should get. I would prolly say get teh 179s, but that is assuming you are of a normal body weight and normal build. Also how hard to you ski. I have a friend who is about your height(178cm) and he skiied obsetheds 2 years ago and used aroud a 180 ski length and loved his setup.
For skinning with twin tips, I'd recommend the Black Diamond STS series. I use the Nylon, but Mohair has better glide on softer, powder snow. Nylon works better on corn and wetter snow conditions (but truthfully, they both work great wherever). The STS attachment system is key for twintips though...
I got the 179s, which works well as an all-mountain ski, but if I could do it again, I would get the same ski in the 189s. They are actually longer than the size, but ski the length posted, so yeah, its a no brainer.
I am looking for a good all around ski for those days when bringing my pair of hellbents to the mountain wouldnt be a good choice.i still want the ski to be able to preform well in the powder, but go into the park if necessary. I am trying to decide between these and the line blends. which one should i get or are there better skis out there?
I have been deciding between the same two skis for a while now. I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people who are "in the know". Bottom line, Go with the K2's. I've heard a lot of negatives about the Line Blend's top coating chipping off easily as well as the metal edge being very soft. The ObSETHed is supposed to have great durability and not to mention it has slight rocker in the tips. Rocker tech is the future for guys who do it all. As far as the park goes If your gunna throw, your gunna throw. I dont think either ski would stand out in the park over the other really. The line will feel a little firmer on the landings, but you'll be happy to have some rocker for the big powder days or if you decide to ride some extreme terrain.
This ski skis really well in all conditions. It does really well on groomers. Not as well as a carving ski would do, but for a ski this wide, it handles and carves on groomers really well. It depends on how quick you are edge to edge, and how well you ski bumps, but I enjoyed this ski in the bumps and found it quite competent. It's a really well rounded ski.
These skis are amazing for all mountain. They do everything well and ski power and crud like its their job, in-fact I'd say it is their job. I skied the 189 (196 by any other company) and found they handled everything from powder to groomers with ease.
I'm a 5'8 185 lb aggressive skier that wants to add this ski to my arsenal.. I have a line blend at 168 (which I feel is way short), an anthem at 171 and an Elizabeth at 172. I'm leaning towards the 179 with a marker schizo setup for my Snowbird and Jackson trips this season to charge around and swing through trees with. Usually I wouldn't ask but would this be to much ski to throw around because I heard they measure or feel longer than labeled..? Any thoughts appreciated.. Thanks.
I'am 6'2 185 and aggressive and rock in my own world! Yes these skis are probly longer than listed. I had a pair of the 189's from 2-3 yrs ago and they actually measured 194 from tip to tail. But I think K2 does a measurement from where the ski contacts the the snow, but with the tip and tail rocker I'am not sure where they measure from but my guess is they are probly longer. I haven't measured any skis lately. The tip and tail rocker are gonna make this ski shorter than you might think, (my experience anyway) meaning good for the trees and quick manuevering. As far as the flex goes, I liked the flex from a couple years ago and wish I still had these skis.
Write your answer here..I'm 5-11, 170 lbs. I like my skis short and maneuverable for the trees. Coming from a pair of 174 Atomic Snoop Daddy's, the 179's looked pretty big in the shop. I bought them anyway and love them. They feel like the right size ski in the trees for me. If I were mostly skiing wide open terain, i think I'd be happy with the next size up. Very maneuverable and very fun to ski.
I own last years model at 189. I'm 5'10" ; 150, and I really enjoy the ski. I had no problem swinging it around on the steeps. The hardest part for me was getting used to riding in the moguls with such a fatty, but if you are used to fatter skis then you should be okay. Last years has a pretty mild flex. I heard a few folks complaining that it was to soft for them, but for me it was great.

Seth--Can you talk a little bit more about how the change in core profile relates to forgiveness and skier size? Thanks
