Julbo Explorer Sunglasses - Camel Anti-fog Lens - 2007
By paring the professionally designed Explorer Sunglasses with photochromic Camel Antifog Lenses, Julbo created high-tech eyewear for any mountain in the world. Chamonix mountain guides teamed up with Julbo to ensure the Explorer glacier glasses include every feature an alpinist needs. In addition to lenses that change tint to match lighting conditions, these glacier glasses include removable side shields that goggle-rivaling protection.
Bottom Line: Professional mountain guides designed the Julbo Explorer Sunglasses to make you have all the features you need when you go to the mountains.
Are the Camel Anti-fog lenses worth it? These glasses cost quite a bit more than the standard Julbo Explorer glasses, is it worth it to fork out the extra for these?
If you would actually benefit from the anti-mist treatment, there's no reason not to go for it.
For most people, however, the only noticeable difference is probably the weight: Alti lenses are glass (heavier), whereas NXTs (these) are polycarbonate (lighter). The lens tint is also slightly different: Altis have no color; Camels are slightly yellowed, apparently an attempt to restore color in "washed-out" conditions. (Just for the record, the glasses appear black when actually worn; the yellow color is only visible when the glasses are off.)
If you shop around, you can get Camels for the price of Altis and avoid the question altogether.
These sunglasses are fantastic! I have used them climbing multiple 14ers in CO this spring and these glasses are ideal. Being a sweaty man I was amazed at how well they vented. The lenses are perfect for the extreme bright light conditions found high in the mountains. I let my girlfriend try them on and she asked me for a pair for her B-Day. Super lightweight and comfortable since you can bend them to mold to the shape of your head. They are pricey but worth it.
Do they block UVA, UVB, UVC abd if so to what extent? What is the maximum % of light that they transmit? I am looking for high altitude glasses that eliminate at least 93% of light and eliminate 100% UV-A,B,C.
Ive used quite a few different glasses over the years, but this is the last pair Ill ever use for snow sports, camping, or hiking. Blocks all UV types. The fit is fantastic; snug like goggles with the same protection, but not the bulk and size. I originally purchased them for snow travel and light mountaineering where I live but they work so well in every situation that I take them on short overnight camps as well. Sometimes, Ill get one of those "hey idiot, why are you wearing glacier glasses on hike" looks, but they would wear them too if they tried them. Price is a little high, but a previous review got it right when stated that designer glasses that cost twice as much cant perform as well as these. Very highly recommended for all outdoor use.
I was initially sceptical of these mainly because of the color; white. Didn't think they would look that good but after a couple of days the look grew on me.
On the technical side I thought the very snug fit, made even better with the pull cord was effective at keeping spin drift, snow and wind out. The lenses wrap the face very well and prevented light leaking around the rims so they do exactly what they are designed to do. The antifog feature also worked flawlessly. They are very light but a little bulky compared to my old CEBE 395's so the carry case is a necessity.
French quality was top notch however; the dark lenses saved my eyesight in bright, snowy conditions.
As with all glasses, sunscreen is necessary to prevent the nose and cheeks getting fried from the UV reflection from the lenses.
Expensive but still cheap and highly functional especially when compared to stupid designer rubbish sold at all those franchised sunglass stores you can't avoid at the shopping mall.
Sure, Julbo products can be shipped to Australia. Keep in mind that you will pay a substantial amount in freight and you are responsible for any and all customs liabilities.
