JanSport Scout Backpack - 3850cu in - 2008

Just like your first external-frame pack, the JanSport Scout Backpack features a panel-loading design and a sleeping bag bar shelf. This three- or four-day pack works well for teenagers and beginning backpackers, as the external aluminum frame adjusts easily to accommodate torso lengths from 13 to 17 inches. The breathable mesh lumbar cushion allows air to circulate and keep the back cool during summer trips into the backcountry. JanSport constructed the Scout Backpack with two side water bottle pockets for close-at-hand hydration and two daisy chains for gear clippage.

Bottom Line: The JanSport Scout Backpack is a sturdy, reliable pack for teenagers or hikers of small stature.

Pros and Cons

By:
February 27, 2009

This was my first pack to use after graduating from camping in the back yard. Pros: good size for a weekend trip; top and bottom compartments keep your food separated from the rest of your gear; plenty of pockets for those who like to be organized; sturdy adjustable frame; smaller frame size for those of us who never quite hit that growth spurt. Cons: separate compartments make it impossible to put the tent inside the bag, leaving it strapped to the outside to possibly get snagged on a branch sometime along the trail; must be balanced perfectly against something to get it to stand upright; so many pockets you might feel inclined to fill them all with extra gear you won't use.

Good Pack

By:
May 28, 2008

This is a good pack, very rugged and also fairly light. I always have extra room when on backpacking trips. I use it on every trip I go on. I would give it a five star rating, but it is heavy compared to some other packs. Overall I would recommend this to every one who is starting out into backpacking.

Spend the extra ten bucks and get a much better pack from Mountainsmith: http://www.backcountry.com/store/MOU0121/Mountainsmith-Youth-Scout-Backpack-3356cu-in.html.
