Icebreaker BodyFit260 Tech Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The Icebreaker Men's BodyFit260 Tech Top features super high quality New Zealand merino wool. The Tech Top has a three-way neck (zipped up to your chin, zipped and rolled like a turtleneck, or unzipped for venting) for versatility and thumb loops to help warm your hands and hold sleeves in place. Merino keeps its heat-retaining properties when wet, prevents body odor build-up, offers expedition-weight warmth at half the bulk of an equivalent synthetic, and rivals many synthetics in breathability. The Tech Top's natural four-way stretch sticks with you through every move. Use the Icebreaker Tech Top as a base layer when skiing or as a shirt for cold-weather fall and spring activities.

Bottom Line: Wear the versatile Tech Top for all your cold-weather outdoor activities.

MY GO TO WINTER LAYER

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
October 10, 2008

I absolutely love my Icebreaker BodyFit 260 top. It is warm for the weight, very stretchy and best of all - DOES NOT COLLECT ODOR, even after multi-day use in Patagonia, where I was sweating a lot! The arms are fairly long and I like the thumb holders, which when not in use are out of the way. My only wish for this top, as with most tops - because of my long torso, is for longer torso length. My torso is crazy long though...I am 6'2" and my pant inseam is 33"! So for most folks it will be plenty long enough. I have used this shirt steadily in winter and when on expeditions for the past 3 years and it is still going strong! The only place it is showing wear is around the cuffs, which is no surprise as I have kept the thumbs in to offer protection to the back of my hands while crack climbing on the sharp granite of Cerro Torre during the FA of the complete SE Ridge. I am a huge fan of Icereaker and especially this piece.

Yo FNM. Icebreaker stuff used to be made in New Zealand. They got so big though that the operation out grew the manufacturing capacity in NZ, so they moved it all to China. All Icebreaker is now made in China, according to my rep.

You can actually check out the manufacturing process on the Icebreaker website. They've got a little video showing the factory it's made in, which is pretty cool. Hope that helps.

First piece from Icebreaker

By:
October 21, 2009

Not impressed. I have heard great things about Icebreaker and thought I'd give this a shot but was disappointed in the fit. I'm 6' 190 lbs and ordered the Large and found that it fit perfect in the shoulders, but it was baggy in the armpits. Also, when you have your thumbs in, it has too much excess material in the wrist area. I guess I was hoping for more of a technical fit. It didn't seem as soft as the other merino wool pieces I own either. I'm bummed it didn't work for me, it seemed other people had better luck. For $110 I was expecting more..

Has anyone done speed workouts or extensive running with this top? Is it too heavy or does it make you overheat? Thanks.

I would generally agree with mobo2112 on temp ranges and that I've done runs in a 200 weight. Though I'll add that ran a marathon in an Icebreaker competitor Smartwool Midweight which I'd place right between 200 and 260, like the 220 GT maybe, at 45 degrees and I was absolutely fine. The thing is merino allows sweat to hang around long enough to get the evaporative (word?) cooling effect in either brand shirt. Synthetic can pull the sweat away too quickly. In fact I'd say the only thing to keep in mind is that as soft as merino can feel, on longer runs it can beat up the nips.

Ironically, I'm going out tomorrow morning in a 200wt icebreaker mondo (no outer layer). Conditions will be dark (530 am), 40deg, feel like 36. I'm doing 6M tempo run, slower than race pace but definitely hard. I am expecting for there to be some sweat, expecially at the elbow crease, and lower back. I could go with a lighter synthetic top, but i like the insulative/warmth of wool...even when wet. The zip will dump some heat, but i'll still sweat.

If its going to be colder, then i would go for a synthetic t underneath, a very light jacket, or light synthetic top over my mondo vs going w a heavier wt layer.

Assuming your hard runs are in the cold (30's or less), i think the 260 is on the cusp of being too heavy. If your talking 40's or more, than i definitely think you can go with a lighter top. If it were more of a steady run, then the 260 would probably be fine as you wont be pushing your heart rate too high.

Great base or for layering

By:
September 25, 2008

This piece rocks. I love the merino wool. Whether wearing this top to the lab or work or the mountain I know that I'll be looking good while staying comfortable. The sizes run small, so order up if you're in between.

I would suggest a large or XL. I am 6' 175 lbs and wear a medium which fits very well in the arms, neck, chest and shoulders. This and a shell would be enough to keep me warm while skiing though I don't know your resistance to cold.

Amazing

By:
August 28, 2009

I went for a walk on the beach the other day and was wearing this top. It was about 58 degrees and mind you the ocean was about 60. I was collecting shells for my lady and I saw a good one out in the water, so I stuck my arm in sleeve down and all, all the way up to my elbow. The shirt was soaking wet yet it remained warm. I couldnt even tell it was wet. I felt warm and dry, as warm and dry as the arm that was actually dry. So a great shirt it keeps you warm when wet or dry, it doesnt itch.
As far as sizing. I have two of em. I am 6'1" with a 45" chest (actual measurement). I have an XL to use as a base layer, it fits well, I can put a thin shirt underneather if needed and I have a XXL to wear as a mid type layer (I can fit a regular tshirt underneathe.

Great Stuff all around

I am 6'01" 210, 36 inch wasit and 46 inch chest 34/35 inch sleeve and the XL fits me like a glove. I have just enough room to wear a lightweight base layer t shirt underneathe. THe length sits just about the belt line on me. hope that helps

poor weight/warmth ratio

By:
February 17, 2009

Meh, I love my other Icebreaker stuff, but this piece just doesn't do it for me. It's not warm enough for its weight, so I end up leaving it at home. Also, it's not nearly as comfy as the lighter weights. The sleeves have thumbholes, however, which are really sweet. So, bonus star for that.

Good Looking and Functional Merino Shirt

By:
April 8, 2009

I've had one of these for about a month - it is my favorite midweight layer. It's not itchy at all and provides excellent moisture regulation. The collar is a perfect height and the zipper is heavy-duty and of adequate length, and the thumbholes in the sleeves are a nice touch when wearing under a shell. It looks pretty good when wearing into the office with jeans, too!

Anyone know whether the sleeves on these are longer than the ones on the Icebreakers that DON'T have thumb loops and if so by how much? I'm not clear as to whether loops are just there to help you keep the sleeves from bunching when you are getting dressed, or are you supposed to go about with the sleeves attached to your palms all day.I imagine having the shirt sleeves inside of your glove palms could be problematic at times (tight gloves...eating a juicy burger...j.k.)

Yes they are quite a bit longer than the icebreakers without thumb holes (like two inches). I do usually just leave the thumb loop on most of the day depending on what I am doing like you mentioned.

premier wool

By:
May 4, 2009

While Icebreaker is a bit more expensive than competing wool brands (smartwool, patagonia) it is worth it. Absolutely "go-to" base layer in colder conditions. The sleeves and thumbloops are perfect length for me in XL (6'2", 210lbs, 35" sleeve, 46" chest), the neck is perfect in height and snugness (both smartwool and especially patagonia fall down miserably here, this is a TURTLENECK for god's sake) and it is a trim enough base-layer fit to put another layer over or a thin layer under without issue. Great comfortable temperature range over any synthetic, can truly go a long time (1 week +) without washing, washes well...you can live in this stuff (I do about half the year). I'm not a fan of some of the funky colors, preferring basic black, but this is one of the best baselayers for cold /cool weather bar none. You will never wear capilene or equivalent again, and the fit and finish is better than any othr wool brand I have seen.

Believe the hype!

By:
May 14, 2009

I was skeptical at first. I have seen a lot of miracle-materials come and go with mixed results - capilene, smartwool, the paint-on condom...but this was on sale, and I went for it. Oh man, can you say new favorite base layer? First of all, I don't find it completely non-itchy. Maybe I'm extra sensitive to wool (I could never wear a wool sweater without a long sleeve shirt underneath, yet I do love lamb kabobs), but I do feel a bit itchy when first putting it on. The itchy feeling is gone within minutes though, and I can keep wearing the shirt for days at a time in total comfort. And that's the other great thing about it - the odor resistance really is as impressive as they say. It is so good that I find myself sniffing it again and again, waiting for it to release the hidden funk, but there just is none. I sweat a lot, and to have a base layer that wicks it all while smelling nice is so unusual that I'm suspecting they've made a deal with the dark one. Wear it by itself and it will keep you cool and dry. Wear it under a windbreaker, and you're ready for any moderate weather. Wear it under a soft shell, and you're going to be toasty no matter where you go. I'd love to say that I'm going to order more of these, but really, the one is already doing the job of 3 or so other base layers that I haven't reached for since I got this one. If these guys ever start making underwear, I'll buy it in bulk.

Icebreaker

By:
March 23, 2009

I was turned on to Icebreaker a few years ago. At first I was not certain it would work as well as described, however after only a little experience with it I have changed my tune. This stuff is amazing. I buy up everything that fits me on Steep and Cheap. I have given away all of my capiline. ICEBREAKER all the way.

By:
October 7, 2008

I love the merino wool. It is extremely comfortable and has all of the properties the description brags about. Icebreaker stuff fits tight so I order a size up, I get XL's when with other brands I wear L's.

The XL fits me well (6'5" 215#). The thumb holes are nice. Neck comes up far enough to keep you warm. I usually wear this along with another tech layer.
