Icebreaker Superfine Hopper - Men's - 2005

The Icebreaker Superfine Hopper short sleeve shirt is, well, super fine. It'll change the way you look at t-shirts. Woven from Superfine Merino wool, the Hopper is not only lightweight and soft, but durable and machine washable. The relaxed fit and raglan sleeves make it comfortable beyond belief.

Bottom Line: A truly comfortable t-shirt.

First Icebreaker To Disappoint Me

By:
July 7, 2005

I like Merino wool products a lot. This has been mentioned in other reviews and forums. They wick well, keep you dry when wet and have virtually no reek like synthetic baselayers.

A few weeks ago, I purchased two of the Icebreaker Tech Tees and I began to wear them around town. Being that I've worn Icebreaker midweight Zip T's, I was familiar with the quality of the baselayers.

I ordered another Tee, the Hopper, and washed the shirt as recommended (Sport Wash, inside out) and wore it for an eight hour hike and climb of two 14ers and tough connecting ridge. The baselayer worked well to protect me, keep me warm in the early morning chill and dry when I began to sweat in the Colorado sunshine.

The negative that I experienced was the pilling of the upper back of the shirt where it came in contact with my close fitting backpack. After I removed it from the washer and line dried it, I saw this pilling of the wool.

This was the first time I've ever seen pilling after only one time of wear. Perhaps this is attributed to the Superfine wool, I don't know. I have two other Superfine shirts that I doubt I will wear with a backpack. This goes against the nature of the baselayer and I'm at a loss as to what to say or write.

I like Icebreaker and will continue to use their baselayer wools. I returned the Hopper for credit and kept the other Tees. I also informed Icebreaker as to the problem.

Best ever

I went running the other day in this shirt and I have to say, this thing is amazing. I'm normally drenched by the time I get back home but with this Icebreaker shirt, my upper body was almost perfectly dry... and I didn't smell.

NEW ZEALAND MERINO

By:
July 5, 2005

I picked up my first Icebreaker T-shirt in New Zealand in April and after finding myself wanting to wear it everyday (very, very comfy), ordered two more from this site. They are expensive but well worth it.
I am considering tossing all of my cotton T-shirts.
You can wear these things daily for a week or more if you wanted to. They don't smell for some reason and stay looking good.
If there is a downside at all:
-During heavy aerobic activity, they do not stay nearly as dry as Coolmax and some synthetics.
-I have a hairy muscular chest and the material seems to pull my chest hair causing very minor irritation - but you probably won't have that problem anyway.
Overall, these are my favorite pieces of clothing and I am a bit of gear geek.
I plan to wear one as a base layer next week on an Australian backcountry ski trip (yes, they have snow here).
Cheers,
GREG
