Hutchinson Bulldog Mountain Bike Tire - 2007

No tire is perfect for every type of terrain—but the Hutchinson Bulldog Mountain Bike Tire comes pretty damn close. With a bed of equidistant tread knobs and beefy, aggressive center and shoulder knobs, this tire takes on everything from hardpack to mud. When you’re railing a sketchy corner, this tread pattern gives you a heads up before the tire slides out (unlike more square-profiled tires, which go from bite to bail with no warning). The Bulldogs come in three versions: Airlight, Airlight Folding, and MRC Folding, which is tougher and grippier, but a bit heavier. All three versions offer low rolling resistance and surprising acceleration.

Bottom Line: Excellent all-mountain and cross-country mtb tire.

Good tire for Colorado

By:
April 8, 2009

I've been using these front and back for a while, and they handle everything from hardpacked dirt to mud to rock gardens fairly well. The only thing they don't do well on is slickrock; For some reason they slide out too easily on exposed, smooth rock, so I wouldn't recommend them for Moab. But they've handled everything else I've thrown at them, even some ice and snowpack. Great tires if you ride along the front range in Colorado.

Great front tire

By:

I've riden and raced this tire (tubelesslight) ever since Hutchinson introduced it a few years ago. When paired with the Pirahna as a rear tire, this combo is light, rolls fast in all conditions and corners very well. Really excels in east coast single tract but I've thought it's light weight and non-box shape was just as fast in high altitude western NORBA races. Some prefer and will say they like a low profile front tire for fast smooth western single tract (like the Pirahna front/back) but I never found it to hold like the Bulldog. Great all around tire - go airlight or tubeless light for racing.

Airlight Folding weight spec is wrong

By:
March 2, 2009

The online spec for the Airlight Folding tires said they weighed 504g each. I ordered a set and weighed them when they arrived, and they are 750g each. Not even close! That said, they do seem to be nice tires for the $$ and I will find a use for them on my other bike.

Good all-around tire

By:

I went with the MRC Folding since I wanted something a little skinnier. These have done well in all riding conditions - they cruised through mud without bogging and cornered well on the dry sections of the trail. Also not too bad on pavement. I like the rounded cross section that these tires have - lets you play with inflation pressure to vary the contact patch. I'd definitely recommend them, especially if you see them roll up on Chainlove.com again.
