Highgear Altis TI Altimeter Watch - 2008

Get a precise picture of current conditions with the Highgear Altis TI Altimeter Watch. This multi-function watch provides accurate readings on altitude, air pressure, direction, and temperature for mountaineering, skiing, or trekking. The Altis’ altimeter works up to the summit of Everest, and the barometer function gives sea level and absolute pressure, as well as a weather forecast for when you’re planning your summit attempt. A digital compass, digital thermometer, and ski chronograph provide even more data, and the sleek titanium casing works as well on the town as it does in the backcountry.

Bottom Line: Get a bead on current conditions with the Altis TI.

Watch is well built. Large & very heavy on the wrist. You will know you are wearing it. It works well and as advertised. I only rated it 3 stars for 2 reasons:

1. It's not the most intuitive and user friendly watch. There are many features and functions and it takes a bit of time to learn how to work it. You pretty much have to read the manual. I had an Avocet altimeter watch previously that was MUCH easier to use. For the price I would expect a much simpler interface.
2. My jacket or glove continually bump the buttons and changed the watch settings while I am skiing. I've missed numerous runs because of this and didn't realize the watch had turned off the counter.

This watch has the advantage that you can replace the battery yourself. The Avocet required you to resend to the factory every time the battery died, which is why I bought this one to replace it.

The best multi-function altimeter watch I have owned

By:
November 26, 2008

I have owned 3 Casio altimeter/barometer watch's. All of them were kind of bulky. Then I bought a Highgear model Alterra 2 years ago. After the first year the outer covering on the side came loose. I contacted Highgear and they said to return it. They replaced it with no questions. Almost 1 year later the same thing happened. At this point they had released a new model, the Altis, without the covering. I asked if I could upgrade to the Altis and only pay the difference and they agreed. I have had it now for about 2 weeks. Function wise it is just as great as the Alterra. It is very accurate. What I prefer over other brands is the altimeter operates in 1 foot increments. For the money this is probably the best value you can find and the support is excellent.
