The Hestra Army Leather Heli Ski Mitten is a full-featured gauntlet mitt made with cold early mornings and deep powder in mind. The Heli Ski Glove is super-warm and durable thanks to windproof, waterproof, and breathable Triton/Entrant fabric. The Army Leather goatskin palm is super grippy and stays flexible in the coldest conditions. The interior lining is removable and replaceable, so you can customize your warmth and dry it out between epic pow days.
Bottom Line: Hooray for super warm, techy mittens!
These are very warm, and that is also the problem. I use them only for the coldest days, when I know my fingertips (frostbitten years ago) will hurt with winter gloves. Wearing them while skiing in average winter weather--say 15 degrees F or warmer--is uncomfortable because they are simply too warm! These are well made, fit well and should last a long time.
hey my lil bro is asking for a pair of hestras and wants a mitt..... he moved to Montana and I'm wondering if anyone knows how the snow is.... and the colder temps... we grew up down the road from a small resort in cali and always used and abused our gear with no probs.... im just wondering if these or the xcr's might be better for montana.... so ya im basically asking whats the weather like over there? thanks
Hi, I have finally managed to get my lady friend on the slopes. She has notoriously cold hands so I want to get her some super warm mitts. We will be skiing eastern NA, mostly Tremblant, where its often colder than -30 celcius with the wind. I am thinking the Heli's or maybe the Swany Legends...anyone have a suggestion?
good choice , These are super warm have removable liners so they dry quickly and come with a lifetime warranty. Even warmer is the softshell extreme mitt from Hestra.
im debating whether to get the xcr mitt or this and my biggest concern is warmth. i know the xcr is more waterproof but will it help keep my hands uch warmer. i ski in colorado so the waterproof factor usually isnt a big deal
I can tell you the difference from trying both mitts and both the heli glove and xcr you asked about also . 1. both are very warm but each has a slightly different insulation one goes getter with each outer shell. 2. Both have a water proof shell The xcr has a different material on it then the heli both work good. 3. xcr has a bit more stiffness to the glove because of the shell it has for water proofing. 4. for me the heli is a little more comfortable because of the softer insulation and outer shell fabric. 5. The heli is a bit easier to grab with 6. The xcr focus is a bit more for water proofing then extreme cold . Hope this helps each is a excellent choice I would say choose the xcr for more skiing snow board etc The heli for more extreme cold and mountain climbing or cold winter treks. ENJOY!
If you're not worried about them being waterproof, go for these. The XCR I'd say is more for the kind of wet snow you'll find in the PNW - not Colorado. I grew up skiing in Utah and never had goretex gloves or cold fingers!
I have the Heli 3-finger mitts - so I can't speak to the XCR's. Like you stated, obviously they'd be more waterproof. However in 2 years of patrolling and skiing I've never had an issue with my hands being wet OR cold in my Heli's. My hands actually are usually TOO warm and I and up taking the mitts off and letting them hang from the straps for part of the lift ride up. That's in the 20's and low 30's. I haven't had any issues with cold hands down to around zero degrees (Fahrenheit). I would buy them again in a heart beat, best gloves I've ever purchased.
I finally got to test these mittens out skiing in Colorado and they didn't dissapoint. Wtih negative windchills my hands stayed roasting in the mittens, I can see how some people might find these too warm in 30-40 degree weather, but for me they were great. The liners kept the moisture from building up too much, and they dried out very fast when I pulled them out at lunch and the end of the day. I was suprised at the amount of dexterity I had, it was very easy to grab poles, clip in bindings on boots, unzip jackets...also the wrist loops allowed for very quick on and off to use cell phone and other items.
I have notorious cold hands and I can honestly say this is the first time I have gone skiing and not had to use hand warmers. These mittens rocked!
Hi, Do these mittens have an inside glove? I have Raynaud syndrome and my fingers needs to be together in order to be warm. I am looking for very warm mittens since my fingers end up always without blood circulation. I'm a ski instructor and already have a collection of mittens....Planning to use them for hiking with snowshoes or even skate skiing. Isabelle
I think you were asking if the mittens have finger separations in them. They do not. I have the Raynaud thing as well really sucks these mitts will keep you warm.
These mittens are durable, super toasty, and functional. I have a lot more flexibility in these mittens then I did in the OR Cornice ones I used to own, and they are just as warm. I have only used in about -20F windchill, but my hands were still warm at that temperature. The leather grip makes them easy to use, and the removable liner is awesome for drying them out at lunch on ski breaks when the weather is a bit warm.
These are very close to the warmest , the other is the or alti mitt both are for the xtreme think I would go with the or if you are going above 7000m .
I live in interior Alaska, and recently bought these as a gift for a friend. The sizing ended up being perfect. We went boarding at -15 to -20 below, plus winds of about 20+ mph. Three hours in and his hands were toasty. It's been around -40 below lately and he says they are the best, most comfortable, warmest hand gear he's ever worn. Only minus is that the white leather on the palms tends to get a little dirty (of course), but for comfort like that, who cares?
I use these in cold weather on my motorcycle. They are great. The large cuffs go over my coat arms and keep the 70 mph air out. I've worn them in the winter at 15 above F and 70 mph, and stayed warm. The elastic wrist band attachments are handy to keep the mittens from blowing away / falling off when you take them off.
I love these mittens. They are warm and comfy but still give me enough dexterity to do up my board bindings. Too bad I only wore them twice before my dog ate the leather palm. Its a good thing she is cute. But the gloves were so awesome I am buying another pair!
Excellent glove. I have had them for about 5 years and have never had cold hands in them. They also don't show any signs of aging at all. The interior liner might be the softest I've ever felt, and it's removable, which is great because they're are so warm that it is good to have a lighter liner on hand (no pun intended) to swap in on warmer days.
I think I wear the Hestra Heli Mitt more than any other glove or mitten all ski season, which is probably about 120 days for me. My hands get cold quite easily, and it is extremely rare that my hands get cold in these. The leather palm is nice and supple, and plenty grippy, and my hands are almost always dry. I use them without the wrist straps, which seem a bit over the top. If you condition the mittens with leather balm regularly, these will last a nice long time. Mine are coming out of their third season, and they're still holding really strong!
