GoLite Trail Fly Trail Running Shoe - Men's - 2007

GoLite designed every square inch of the Trail Fly Men's Trail Running Shoes to give you the traction and support you need for long-distance mountain runs. What really sets these GoLite shoes apart from the pack is their Vertical Motion soles. Each lug acts independently and molds the shoes to the terrain below, so you get 100% traction on every step. The well-ventilated, fully synthetic uppers give the Trail Fly Shoes excellent breathability in hot conditions and help keep the weight to a low 11.7 ounces.

Bottom Line: Travel further with better traction and more comfort when you wear the GoLite Trail Fly Shoes.

Disappointment!

By:
June 17, 2009

This shoe seems to have a high center of gravity and sucks as a running shoe. I primarily do trail running in areas with a lot of rocks and roots. I accepted that and decided not to run in them. I climbed one peak and wore them around town for a few weeks and the whole side split out and the shoes are pretty much trashed within a month of purchase with me never really getting to use them for what I wanted to use them for. I love golite but their shoes suck. Spend your money elsewhere. As for me, i am going back to solomon.

great for descents but big

By:
May 9, 2007

Based on two runs so far (5-6 mi), on very rough, steep single track (rocks, branches, very irregular rain-altered, pine needle covered off camber with drop offs). The shoes work well on this type of rough, irregular terrain, and you actually feel the spikes taking the shock of the foot strike. This is especially noticeable on the descents, where the Trail Fly really shines. Even on an extremely steep 3 mile descent, without holding back, the shock was absorbed and my feet and ankles did not suffer any injury. Good support. Me: 5ft 8in, 150lbs, Size 9.5, D. The fit was too wide overall (esp forefoot). Using the low volume insole, my toes were pointed up. Low mark is for fit; performance was great.

Awesome Shoes!

By:
May 30, 2007

I have never cared much for low-cut trail running shoes because of the lack of ankle support but, with short, wide feet and a narrow heel, I was looking for an alternative to either heavy, high-top boots or sneakers for simple day hikes. The first day out with them I did 26 miles in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in Washginton, DC and my feet felt great. There was plenty of width in the toe-box and my heels stayed snug. The following week I did a 2,400' ascent up to Serene Lake, at the base of Mt. Index, outside of Seattle, and the Trail Fly's stuck to the wet rocks like glue. These shoes are "the bomb"!

mountain running at its best

By:
February 4, 2008

These are the lightest, most stable mountain running shoes available. Also, no blisters! If you like endurance running on tough terrain, then these are the wheels for you.

Disappointed

By:
November 19, 2007

My experience with the shoe was disappointing. On paper the idea has merit of how the shoe should perform similar to independent suspension of a car or like Nike's Shox technology. However on technical trails is where the shoe leaves a lot to be desired. On rocky, rooty terrain the shoe is very unstable and you have to very cognizant of foot placement. Bottom line is that I felt like I was fighting this shoe as compared to a shoe with a solid foot plate. I could see where this shoe has a place in flat absolutely non-technical trail running such has cinder track or a park

different then other shoes

By:
April 29, 2009

I love it when companies are innovative and it works. These are different from your typical trail run shoes. I like the look of them so much that I decided to use them as an everyday shoe. If you have a narrow foot you may want to downsize a half size. I usually wear a 10 but had to return to get the 9-9.5 and they fit perfect. they don’t have half sizes because they come with different size inserts with every pair for a perfect fit.

My favorite trail shoe

By:
October 17, 2008

My old feet love these supportive shoes. I am on my third pair of Trail Fly's and have done long events (7-12 hours) and all types of terrain. These shoes are effective on all surfaces, including small rocks, crushed rocks, solid rock, sand, and packed trails. I have run downhill on trails over many small rocks and do not care where my foot lands. This shoe has been stable, and does not tend to roll any more than other shoes, and seems to prevent rolls at other times. The Trail Fly has the best combination of weight, energy return, and cushioning all the way to the toes of all the models. The Spike Tail feels like a stiffer ride, and on very long runs this provides more support. The Sun Dragon is a lighter shoe, but the has less cushioning overall and this is most noticeable under the toes compared to the other models. The toe box has plenty of room. Finally, if I am going to walk the pavement on city streets, the Trail Fly is my preferred choice to provide support and cushioning.

Great shoe but...

By:
May 24, 2007

This is a great shoe, but unfortunately due to my anatomically odd right ankle, it tends to rub on it and thus the shoes are useless to me. This is really too bad as the treads are excellent and the left shoe worked perfectly.

If only Golite made a shoe with a slightly lower cut (perhaps the Sun Dragons, which I will try next.)

Concept is good but....

By:
April 20, 2009

I hike six to ten miles a day. These shoes just didn't hold up. The shoe is confortable, plenty of room in the toe box, good grip and support on the bottom, however, after one week of use the shoe started to rip on top. If the quality was better, made with good materials, you would have a hell of a shoe. Sorry, your going to have to do better to keep serious runners, and hikers interested.

Comfortable, but UGLY!

By:
April 17, 2009

These shoes are crazy comfortable and functional. They are fantastic for quick turns, fast descents and big jumps. However, they are without a doubt the ugliest shoes I have ever purchased. My girlfriend is begging me to send them back.

2nd Pair, Same Problem

By:
February 17, 2009

I am giving them 3 stars because of the many shoes I have run in since starting trailrunning 4 years thses are the most comfortable, smoothest transitions, lightest shoe I have worn. The only problem and the reason why they are not 4 or 5 stars is that the mesh of the toe box has ripped on this pair and the Dragon Flys that I bought last year. It just so happened that I ripped both pair pacing friends running 100 milers.

These kicks are SICK!

By:
April 22, 2009

I have had my eye on these for a while, and they finally popped up on SAC for a "killer deal". I accidentally ordered two pairs because of multi-tasking, but after trying these on, I'm keeping both. These are awesome, I have not yet trail-tested them as I have only had them for a few days, but I have walked/ jogged in them on on-road. They have a great supported feel and a sole that rolls your foot forward. These are probably the most comfortable shoe I have worn. The 3 options for insoles are a good touch too, I chose the med. The toe box and shoe in general is nice and roomy, but not enough for slippage w/ the correct insole and tie-job. The shoe is surprisingly light for it's overall volume (they aren't lean and mean, just mean.) They do have a tongue gusset, but it's translucent as are some vents on the sides of the shoe, so don't mistake this for a shoe you can spray to water-proof, instead these focus on ventilation. The fabric used for all the impt. spots is solid, composed of ripstop and "neoform" which is a rubberized-like material that is easily cleaned. The 12/12.5 fit me nicely and I wear a 13 in PUMA, ASICS, & Patagonia. I wear a 12 in Merrell.

Poor Quality

By: Backcountry.com Employee
January 2, 2008

This shoe has a ton of cushion. However, this makes for an unstable ride on technical steep downhills. The major disappointment with these shoe is their poor quality. The material on the toe box has ripped straight across on two pairs of these- and I had never run in them. Due to this I cannot recommend these shoes.
