Thanks to three-ply waterproof Trinity stretch fabric and no-frills construction, the GoLite Men's Gamut Jacket provides beefy shell protection in a 15-ounce package. The excellent breathability and weather protection of the Gamut Jacket keeps you bone dry when rain invades your fastpacking route. GoLite's minimalist design makes this waterproof jacket a great choice for weight-conscious through hikers and alpine climbers obsessed with clean function.
Bottom Line: Get heavy-hitting protection in welterweight class with the GoLite Gamut Jacket.
This is a great jacket with a great cut (6'0, 180 lbs, I got a large). It has room for a heavy layer fleece underneath but still remains fairly streamlined looking. The length is perfect for me. There are large interior mesh pockets integrated into the exterior pockets and an audio port for a headphone cord that allows access to the interior in one pocket. Well thought out and perfectly minimal. I love the hood! It has a simple rear velcro flap that allows adjustment for heavier rain but is fine as is for lighter rain. GoLite has the market on simple, effective, pragmatic design with the pinch point cinch for the elastic hood cord that runs the perimeter of the face. Rubber tabs and velcro allow wrist adjustments and look gnarly.
The day I got this jacket was perfect, stormy and down pouring. Excellent initial test conditions. I walked around outside and stayed in the rain for about 20-30 mins and stayed dry. Though to my surprise the shoulders look as if they had begun to soak (hence four stars), it looked darker and splotchy. The interior was dry, but for how much longer? Not sure if this should be the sole rain jacket for going out in knowingly stormy conditions.
What are the exact differences between the Golite Paradigm and the Golite Gamut? I know the Paradigm features pit zips and an mp3-player pocket but are there any other differences?
Secondly, I am considering buying this jacket (or the Paradigm) for a 3 week hike through Norway. The question is: will this jacket offer enough waterproofness to get through the entire holiday decently? I don't mind if a tiny bit of water gets through but I want to stay nearly dry. Will this jacket provide enough waterproofness for that or will it soak through early?
New models have improved zipper. No waist cord, though one could be easily installed. The three layer fabric is relatively waterproof and wind proof, though I think it would wet out after a few minutes of hard rain. Very stretchy. Very compressible. Windproof up to around 40-35 mph winds. Covers most of your ass when cycling. Great for price.
1. Will this work for fast skiing or will it flap - how thick and stiff is the fabric?2. Helmet-compatible hood?3. I have a 40" chest, does that mean the medium, which spec is 40", would still have room for a thick fleece without feeling any restriction during flowy park snowboarding - or do I size up?
it probably wouldnt flap. its not that baggy. there is no insulation, and the fabric is not too thick. with no other layers, it can keep me warm to like 55 degrees or so.probably not ski helmet compatable, but climbing helmet would probably fit.
This jacket is great. The trinity is super water proof. It has been in the rain and tested in the shower and it hasn't leaked at all. The stretch is really nice, the jacket is comfy. Great for skiing. Anyway, you should check it out.
These jackets have whats considered an athletic fit, narrow waist, narrower shoulders, tighter chest. It is shorter also in length so that it does not get caught in the way of activities.

My favorite wind/rain jacket. Yeah, it doesnt have a waist cinch, and it would be nice to have, but it is not designed for fat folks so there isnt much/any extra fabric that needs to be gathered together at the waist. The main benefits are lite weight, good construction, and lite weight. Could it use more bells and whistles.. sure but then it wouldn't be feather light. sac price couldn't be beat..
Bought this jacket for my husband- he's 6'3", about 180 lbs- thin frame. Size Large fits him well. Beware- this jacket is slim fitting, so probably go up a size if you have broader shoulders. Very lightweight and not cumbersome. Good rain-proof jacket- looks great on him too. Got it on sale for $45- a steal!!
