Gerber River Shorty Blunt-Tip Knife

A favorite of everyone from professional raft guides to recreational kayakers, the Gerber River Shorty Blunt-Tip Knife has become one of the most popular river knives ever made. Gerber's blunt-tipped design ensures you don't accidentally puncture your multi-thousand dollar raft when you're frantically cutting tangle lines from a wrapped boat. The River Shorty comes with a sheath that clips to your PFD, so it remains within easy reach when you need it.

Bottom Line: Made for the river.

A River Guide's Best Friend

I've been a guide for a few seasons now, and I finally found my way to the Gerber knife collection. Of all the different makes and models of knives on the river, I've been most impressed with this one, in part due to its multi-use functions. I especially like the blunt tip now, after having to adjust some oar-locks while running the rapids through Cataract Canyon. The serrated edge cut through anything I needed, yet won't puncture a boat if dropped on the floor.

Sheath not secure

By:

I've had my shorty fall out several times. I've been luck not to lose it when I've gone for a swim down a rapid. I'm not a big fan.

Good knife for the price

By:

I got one (although I want to upgrade to the pricier CRKT ABC ER Knife). I have used it on my PFD on approx 500 river trips (whitewater kayaking). It has never fallen out, although I have friends who have lost theirs. If you are worried about that -- any knife can fall out of a sheath. Just attach a cord to it.
It is a great peace of mind -- you would never want to be handling a rope near the water if you didn't have a trustworthy knife at hand to get you out of a predicament.
