Garmin eTrex Legend H - 2007

The Garmin eTrex Legend GPS is loaded with a full basemap of North and South America, and uses Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) for proven accuracy in an affordable unit. WAAS corrections keep you focused within a 3 meter radius on the lakes, rivers, cities, highways, railroads and coastlines of the hardwired basemap, or any of the maps available for download to the eTrex Legend's 8MB of free memory. Meanwhile, the super cool translucent blue case will wow your traveling companions into submission.

Bottom Line: The Garmin eTrex Legend puts handheld GPS navigation within your reach.

Long Lasting

By:
November 28, 2008

I've had this unit for 5-6 years now. I keep losing it in the bottom of a drawer but when I use it, it works great. The screen can't compare to today's but the battery life is good and you can bring extra AA's for those weekend trips. I use it as a safety net when I'm in a new place.

I plan on using this in Glacier National Park and need a GPS that will show contours and where to find streams and lakes for fishing and drinking. Will the legend work or do I need something else?

There are some great maps of the Pacific Northwest and National Parks of the West in particular that are quite detailed available for purchase on the Garmin website. They can be pretty expensive on the Garmin website however. I'd try finding an alternate site or an outfitter like REI to buy one for a lot less.

I am pretty sure you can upload a topo map of the area onto this thing, and then that should be what you are looking for, with elevation lines and water features.

Not the best

By:
June 23, 2009

I'll be honest. I got this as a gift. I was expecting a different brand/model. This unit gets the job done but isn't very powerful. The controls are mainly built for left handed use which can be helpful for right handed people like myself to keep my dominent hand free, however, working the functions can get a little annoying and slow because of it. My hiking buddy has a Magellan and to put it simply... I am very jealous.

Yes and yes.
If you have decent mapping software, you can navigate lakes as you would land since the information (shoreline, size, etc.) is all contained in topo information (2M topos being the best solution). You can also create waypoints anywhere, so you could map fishing spots. This would be a workable solution, though not ideal for an avid water sports enthusiast.

For greater detail and information, Garmin's MapSource BlueCharts (lake/marine mapping) offers much more detailed information (contour lines, detailed shore information, Boat ramps, river/stream info). The U.S. Inland Lakes DVD covers the entire country for around $140: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1404

This is all the GPS you really need.

By:
November 28, 2008

I've had fancier GPS with color maps and topography, but I always come back to the legend. It has all the features you need and none of the ones you don't. "A prudent mariner doesn't rely on one source of navigation". You should have a paper map and compass with you anyway, since batteries often do run out at the most inopportune times.

Great GPS

By:
June 9, 2008

I bought this GPS to be used as a quick small hand held GPS for search and rescue. I have never had a single issue with it and i would recommend it to anyone. Its fast and easy to use, especially if its night time and you have gloves on. Works great for the price, i have taken it to the ends of extreme weather conditions and never am very happy with it!

Lost in the Forest

By:
May 7, 2008

I bought this device to take along with me on motorcycle trips and works ok when you are in open areas. Now if you plan on using this as a navigation device in a car for get it. The device keeps looking searching for a signal, unless stick it out the window to get a clear reception. I took this out the mt.baker(wa) and wanted to see how this device worked in the woods. In dense wooded trails i was basically getting no signal. When I was walking back from the trails on the road I tested the eTrex again, took it out of my pocket and had no signal. I was in a section where the road had no trees just deep in the canyon, I raised the etrex over my head got a signal(from two satellites out of the 10+ listed). I was amazed to see that I could actually block the signal to the GPS device. Do not spend the money on this device, save it for a better Garmin or other brand.

GPS does work in Asia (it works worldwide), but your maps are limited. This is what will work with this unit:http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/WM.jspI believe the legend has maps specific for three parts of the world. I bought my first legend in Singapore and it had maps of asia. Returning stateside the maps were only rudimentry, Sates, citys, but no roads. The believe the three sections of the world are North & South America, Europe & Africa, and Asia.

Why don't you have this? Why did you not buy this already? If you do not have a GPS and need a GPS then buy this one!!! It's all you need. I'm just sorry I lost mine in the woods that day. I just put it down for a second. I swear.
