GSI Outdoor Ultralight Telescoping Foon - 2008

If you didn't figure out that ‘Foon' refers to a combination fork and spoon and using more than one utensil at a time is still a challenge, you definitely need a GSI Ultralight Telescoping Foon. The telescoping movement shortens the Foon for storage, and lengthens it for chowing down on stoup (steak + soup).

Bottom Line: Hey, has anyone seen my Knirk?

Decent, nothing to write home bout

First off, lol @ DakkaGuru's comment. Goood stuff!

I purchased the foon, but recieved the spoon, so I can't comment on the fork portion of this piece of gear. This definitely is not a utensil that you want to dig into really solid food and if you're looking into eating some icecream then I'd let it sit and soften up a good bit. Im not sure where the complaints on the retracting handle are coming from because mine works fine. Handle the retraction with some sense because the plastic could be able to cut you. Ive read reviews stating they've cut themselves on the handle, but as I said...use some sense while handling and you'll operate this cut free. I will say that I love the small size of this utensil and I particularly pack non cooked foods for the back country to save time, space, weight, and labor. However I do carry the staple of outdoor journeys such as mac n cheese and ramens, oatmeal and grits. For such things which are pretty popular trail foods this utensil works great. I can store it neatly inside my GSI Soloist kit which is a big plus for me. It stays safe in there with no worries of it getting banged up or broken. For my use its actually perfect, although it will not replace my Light My Fire Spork for when I catch some trout or drag a good steak into the back country. I'd recommend it for the uses I say its good for.

Mine didn't have a sticker on it like DakkaGuru's so I haven't had an issue with sticky residue...guess it depends on how it gets packed, etc.

Not worth it

I picked this up not expecting much from a sub $5 plastic eating utensil, but that being said I was still disappointed. The telescoping mechanism is prone to breakage, I had to re-attach it a few times and the tracks that the spoon part runs on collect food particles and require more cleaning than a non telescoping spoon would. I was hesitant a few times when using this product in hot food due to its flimsy plastic design, and after use and cleaning, it requires a reasonable amount of force to collapse but then has no latch at the back to keep it in compact form. It is however, lightweight and will not scratch your pots, but those or the only good things it has going for it in my opinion.

Great idea, poor execution

I really wanted to like these little guys. I purchased 4 of them. Maybe the food I was eating was too solid for such a lightly constructed utensil. The tongs on the first foon bent. It seemed quite flimsy, especially where it telescopes out and locks into place. I resorted to using traditional plastic cutlery and felt safer doing so.

I purchased this mainly for its compact size. I guess I should have looked into something more rugged and durable even though it may have taken up more room in my pack. If you choose to go with this utensil, stick with softer foods.

Not Bad

nice idea, I don't know how long it will last though. Seems flimsy, the tongs on the "fork" portion of the "spork" seem really flimsy but it's lexan so hopefully it will last several trips in my pack. I will probably bring a backup set of utensils for my first trip...

It's not the easiest tool to eat with, and flimsy seems to be a good word. The teeth are a problem with strength. I would just spend a little more money and get something that is better and lasts a long time.

Nothing to write home about

Dear Mom,
I got a new GSI Ultralight telescoping Foon. It is a lot lighter than the ones you used to hit me with. The handle slides up but not enough to stay out of the way from me enjoying your corned beef hash you always made for us. The handle has a hard time sliding back and not overlapping the spoon portion. There is also a sticky residue that is hard to get off once you remove the sticker which comes attached, just like when Dad did the dishes. Tell everyone hi for me and just to invest in a Backcountry.com titanium spork instead of this thing.

Love,
Dakka

I like it because its small and lightweight. However, when you slide it into the closed position and try to open it, it starts to bend the teeth and I am worried it will break soon.

I've been on one trip with the foon so far... the only trouble I really have with it is clicking the utensil portion in place and then getting it to retract. The mechanism works just fine, but sometimes I hurt my fingers trying to retract it. Cleans like a dream, though! Overall, I would recommend it.
