GSI Outdoor Pinnacle Dualist Cookset

Thanks to GSI’s nForm nesting system, the Pinnacle Dualist cookset gives two hungry backpackers a durable, compact, and lightweight solution for backcountry dining. The Dualist is so light and versatile, that it garnered a coveted Editor’s Choice award from Backpacker Magazine in 2008. Two bowls, two mugs with sipping tops, two telescoping Foons (fork / spoon), and an ultralight stove and small fuel canister all fit neatly inside the 1.8-liter pot (stove and fuel sold separately). GSI also included a small bag so your stove doesn’t scratch the pot and a welded stuff sack that doubles as a small wash basin.

Bottom Line: Enter a new realm of lightweight, functional cookware.

GSI DUALIST

By:
October 10, 2009

I have owned the Nform dualist for a while. The pinnacle dualist is improved by teflon and a BPA free lid. I love this cookset! I have a full and very detailed review on my site at http://www.kingofdiamonds1.blogspot.com check it out and let me know what you think! I hope this helps a lot of people with their cookset choice!

For simple meals, this is perfect.

I love this thing. When I bought it, it didn't come with the sporks in the picture above.

Pros: Lightweight, compact, nests well, insulated bowls/mugs with lids save fuel, does not add that metallic taste to water/snow melt/food, can grab handle and lid at any time because they never get too hot, handle folds over the top of the lid for storage which keeps things from moving around, there is enough room for a pocket rocket stove inside if you arrange the bowls properly (but not the whisperlite internationale), tall & narrow means that it melts snow pretty efficiently because the rising heat stays in the pot, strainer lid could be useful (though I've never used it)

Cons: narrow pot makes it hard to mix foods if you're making a complex meal, clear lid is nice, but because the pot is so tall and dark, and because you're cooking with water that condenses on the lid, you still can't really see your food (that will be the same with every backcountry pot though), because it is tall the stove can become top heavy and off balance (this is something to be aware of with every stove though), not as non-stick as the teflon coated pots and pans

I like it and I use it when gourmet meals are not part of the plan.

This version of the stove (the one that has the Foon)is said to have a better coating then its predecessor. I can not say from experience that it is any better just thought to be fair that needed to be put out. If you have the Pinnacle version I apologies, I just know two versions of this pot exist.

The MSR Whisperlite will fit inside the pot, but not with everything else inside. I would recommend the MSR Base 2 Pot Set as an alternative. It uses a better teflon coating and the silicon enamel is incredibly durable. As well the Talon Pot Holder is much better at controlling the pot when it's full of boiling water than the Pinnacle's handle...

Pretty neat setup!!!

I am a solo hiker, but bought this set as i am introducing my kids to hiking. Perfect setup for two which aleviates your partners additional set. To help with the questions below, you can fit an MSR Pocket rocket and a 3.53oz Jetboil canister (not included) along with a bic lighter in this setup. The rocket is out of its case and is protected in the set. I got one of the first sets which did not come with the sporks, so your getting a bonus with this kit. This set heats quickly, evenly and cleans real well. I love it!!!

I think there is a misprint: having seen this in a store, the 2 cups fit inside the bowls, which stack to fit in the pot. There does not appear to be any room for a stove...

drop the lids in first and put one bowl\cup combo upside down and you can fit more in the set. Or fit small stuff in each separate bowl.

Great Cook Kit

By:
May 6, 2009

I just got the dualist and took it out for a quick overnight with my girlfriend. Need to say i was presently surprised on how it performed. When I first opened it the "foons" had a sticker over the spoon that warned of pinching your fingers when collapsing them, the sticker left a sticky film on them, which came off with wd-40. The sip lids seal nicely on the mugs to greatly minimize leakage if any around the edges if dumped over. Everything cleans up very nicely, even a little cheesy soup that got burnt on the bottom came off easily. Overall I am very impressed with the dualist.

Fits the bill!

By:
September 11, 2009

I am very pleased with this cookset! I was looking for something a bit taller than some other the other cooksets (packing a woodgas stove). This fits the bill perfectly. It's not tall in an obtrusive way. The height comes as a compromise of width. Either way, it's perfect for me. This is the Dualist model.

As indicated, I use it with a wood gas stove. Even though it gets a bit sooty on the bottom, it washes up perfectly clean. I am very pleased with the quality. The "Foons" that you receive with this are kind of gimicky, but can be used. You can fit a small stove and fuel canister in the whole packed up set provided you turn the bowls so the open faces are facing each other. This will be great when on the mountain!

I haven't used it to cook food in directly, rather I only boil water in it to then mix into freeze dried food envelopes. I can't say with certainty how well it's non-stick surface will stand up against burnt food on the inside of the pot, but if the inside cleans as easily as the outside, it will work great.

Granted the clear lid steams up when boiling water, you can still see when your water is boiling. You wouldn't have as easy of a time with opaque lids.

Overall, excellent cookset. Very highly recommended!

Great Cookset!!

By:
July 17, 2009

I am in the process of getting my wife introduced to backpacking/hiking and picked up this to simplify the cooking process. The product is very well designed and I usually put easy mac/tea/hot chocolate etc. inside of the pot with ease. I love the design and this makes cooking for a few people so easy. Fantastic product that is very functional and practical.
