The Forerunner 205 GPS is Garmin International's 2006 update to the Forerunner 201. Garmin has added a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and new courses feature, improving upon the success of the Forerunner 201. It tracks your every move with a super-sensitive GPS that even works on tree-covered trails and near tall buildings. The Forerunner 205 GPS continuously monitors your speed, distance, pace, and calories burned so you can train smarter and more effectively. The Garmin Forerunner 205 is your trainer, your information source, and your analyst— it tracks your progress, goals, objectives, mapping, and routes.
Bottom Line: The Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS features everything you need to track, organize, and optimize your way-finding, orienteering and trekking.
I've really enjoyed the Garmin 205, it has really added to my runs, I no longer have to guess at distance and it keeps everything logged so I can it view later. I have never lost a signal unless I was inside my apartment and I have even used it on trips in my car as a test. If you don't already have one and are an avid runner this really helps. Even my wife who is just starting out wore it for the first time and loved it. The only complaints are the navigation is a little confusing at first and the light is a dark green light; Indiglo would have been a better choice. Other than that I will continue to track each mile.
I got the Garmin Forerunner 205 based on the recommendation of my sister-in-law. I LOVE it! I take it on long runs, shorts runs, walks, everything! It is very motivating how it tracks my pace and distance.
Only negative piece: the calories burned is WAY too high, so I know it cannot be correct.
The Forerunner 205 GPS delivers on everything it's advertised to do. I have yet to drop signal once it's been established, and the GPS position seems to be very accurate. After you turn it on, set it on something stable with direct view of the sky and you'll get signal within a minute. Software it comes with is lacking. Download the Sport Tracks software for free as another option. All in all, if you have the money to spend and you're already thinking about buying it, then you should. I give it a 4 out of 5 because it could be a little cheaper.
When my Forerunner 201 GPS died for the second time (the first was under warranty, no hassles there), I decided to replace it with the 205. Overall, it's a big improvement: better satellite lock, less smelly band, separate mileage totals for bike & run, and it stores more complicated intervals and has more customizable menus. But you have to remain really still for that inital satellite lock, the display is smaller, and the battery indicator only gives you a vague indication of how much time you've got left. (The 201 tells you how many hours until empty.)
