Gregory Whitney 95 Backpack - 5309-6285cu in - 2008
The Gregory Whitney 95 Backpack is built to carry loads of gear in comfort and designed so you can find it all. Twin side pockets provide entry from the sides as well as from the top, front, and bottom. The Whitney's packed with features that become more delicious with every passing mile: a hydration sleeve, canted bottle holders, V-pull compression straps, and a convertible fanny pack top pocket. Like all Gregory packs, the Whitney 95's fit and comfort are really the secret to its popularity. An adjustable waistbelt and rotating shoulder harness move to accommodate the angle of your hips, the slope of your shoulders, and the width of your neck. They work together with two aluminum stays and a floating framesheet to deliver the cushiest ride this side of a Cadillac.
Bottom Line: With the Gregory Whitney you'll be able to carry over two weeks worth of gear without feeling like a pack mule.
I bought especially for an expedition to Aconcagua in January. I can say is that was my best buy in a long time. I have come to 24kg load on my back and felt that carrying 15kg. It is unexplainable in words the system of suspended load and that is what makes the weight not really feel. Worth every penny you pay.
Bought this pack last summer to do a John Muir Trail hike with my two 10-year-olds, meaning, I had to carry the bulk of the gear for the three of us. Even though this was the heaviest pack I ever carried (50-60lbs), I have to say it was more comfortable than any of my old internal frame packs. After 200+ miles in the High Sierra it looks like new. With a few extra pockets on the outside, I was all organized. things I liked the most were the great ventilation, the glove-like fit, the small pockets on the hip belt. Not so much the fact that the fabric is absolutely not rain proof - soaked my sleeping bag in a hailstorm on Donohue Pass. Nothing a cover can't remedy, though.
It also generated a squeak from the belt system somewhere behind me when leaded heavily - more a think that had me worry about something failing (which didn't happen) than a real issue.
It is light for the size it provides: at the end of the hike, I was carrying all my stuff, our tent, and two bear canisters (bearicade Expedition and Bearvault 500) inside of it.
Recent (Aug '08) customer reviews of the Whitney 95 at REI web site describe pack "blow outs" involving hip strap tears off of frame and seam tears as well. Comments suggesting that the newer model of the W-95 may not be as well built as the older model. Has anyone else experienced similar equipment failures with this Gregory model? SteveM
I wish I could give this pack positive reviews like everyone else. However, this pack has simply not held up over time. I really like the suspension system, it holds gear comfortably but the plastic connectors that connect the hip belt to pack have both snapped making the pack useless. I have had a lot of little problems as well. The pull tabs for the zippers will pull off if you yank on them too hard. The chest straps are simply clipped to the shoulder straps instead of sewn on and can fall off(one of mine did on the airplane on a trip out west) Also the water bottle pocket is made of a soft stretchy fabric that can rip if you have something hard attacked to the side of your pack like an ice picket. Now, granted these problems probably won't affect everyone, this pack is probably perfect for casual use. However of the last 90 days I have spent thirty in the field including twelve days in the cascades so I put it through a lot of abuse. I would not reccomend it for professional or very heavy use.
i've had two of these packs in a row. they're roomy and super comfortable, but both packs were returned because of broken zippers. i definitely use my gear, but don't abuse it that much! not highly recommended
