Even with winter in full effect, you can’t help planning backcountry escapes. GoLite knows the feeling, and the 5500cu in Odyssey Pack is a versatile companion for any excursion you imagine. Made of extremely durable, water-resistant Velocity nylon, the Odyssey Pack holds 5500 cubic inches of gear (5800ci in size Large) for your overloaded hike to base camp and, incorporating the ComPACKtor system, compresses to 1600ci (1700ci, Large) to climb your alpine route. GoLite made this hydration-compatible backpack with all the amenities you expect from a quality pack, and added the ability to carry a snowboard or snowshoes via the external compression straps.
Bottom Line: The GoLite Odyssey Expedition Pack carries big loads and weighs little.
This is a great pack if you need to haul a load. Because of its lack of adjustment, it either fits you or it don't, so make sure it fits your body. A clean sensible design without a lot of extra whistles, well, there is one whistle on the sternum strap. Despite claims to the contrary, it is not waterproof. Somewhat water resistant perhaps.
Your torso length is most critical in sizing a backpack. To find your torso length, measure your back along the spine from the top of your hipbones to the knobby bone at the base of your neck. This will give you the proper measurement system to fit into any backpack.
You need to measure your torso (from the bas of your neck to your waistline)- but you'll probably be better off with the women's version. The pack does compact in to a day pack of sorts, but it's not the easiest thing to do and looks a bit silly. Also, having all this room (5500 ci) kind of encourages you to bring more gear than you really need, so unless you're going to use it for a week or more, it might be overkill.
This pack is for a back length of at least 17.5" so if you are in that then you could get it. They also make a women's version, so look around for that if you want. As for if you need it, it depends on what you want it for. If you want a weekend pack 2-4 days or something, then this bag is probably too big unless you pack tons of gear. But it does pack down a lot, so it is very versatile.
I went from Kelty to Gregory to North Face to Go Lite. I now have two Go Lite packs. I have the jam 2 pack and this Odyssey pack. This is my week long pack where the jam2 is my long weekend pack. I have yet to be able to fill this pack completley full. I hang a MSR Hydromedary bag outside the pack and this works well. Plenty of room, super light and looks good too. Great pack thanks go lite... Flapjack
You could carry them very easily A-frame style with the side compression straps. However, looks like you could not carry them in a diagonal fashion at all.
