When you need skins that are ultra-light and fast-gliding for your hut-to-hut trips and long backcountry tours, look to G3's Alpinist Climbing Skins. Secure connectors pivot to fit over your ski tips and G3's Tail connection system clips onto the tail of your skis, eliminating the weight of other skins' fold-over design and the ever-annoying skin that pops off your ski in the middle of a steep switch-back. The high performance Alpinist Climbing Skins' plush synthetic fabric gives you a fast glide and great traction, An advanced waterproofing treatment keeps these G3 skins dry and free of wet, clumpy snow, so you can tour through changing climate zones without uninvited snow guests clinging to the bottoms of your skins. These skins are available in four standard lengths and a range of widths, and come with a durable nylon bag. *Short for ski lengths 165-177cm, medium for 174-186cm, long for 183-195cm.
Bottom Line: Get dependable, smooth-gliding performance with the G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins.
I love that the glue is not as strong as the BD's which makes for easy on and off, however getting them to line up the same every time because of the slight variability in alignment due to the tip clips is somewhat aggravating and even was a bit of a pain when first cutting them.
Comparison with 2006/2007 orange BD/Ascension skins.
Pros:
The glide is much better than with Black Diamond skins. They are also 3 oz./skin lighter than the Black Diamond skins. Mostly because of the improved glide, I estimate that I am able to climb about 300 ft./hr. faster than with the BD skins. In dry powder, the G3 skins grip as well as the Black Diamond skins. The G3 skins fold up much more compactly.
Cons:
In wet snow or glazed tracks, the G3 skins don't grip as well as the Black Diamond skins. The G3 skins seem to ice up a bit more and have more problems with snow getting between the skins and the ski. Once the G3 glue has snow on it, it is more difficult to scrape clean than the Black Diamond glue and seems to lose more of its stick. The skins are more floppy and harder to handle, especially in the wind, and it is also more difficult to rip the skins off without taking the skis off. Both of these problems can be dealt with by taking the skis off before removing the skins and folding the skins in quarters as you take them off instead of removing them completely and folding in half. The skins are showing some signs of fraying around the edges after 10 days of skiing. Finally, the tail hooks fall off the skis a lot if you aren't careful about tightening them fully.
All-in-all, the pros seem to outweigh the cons, at least when one is skiing primarily dry powder snow.
The tip clips on these are great and always fit on the tail clip. Had a pair of BD skins before this and could never get the perfect length with the fold over of the skins. These work great every time. Just make sure you get the right size. The G3 Website has the best data on sizing.
I have Rossignol Telemark Hip Chick skis, 166 length, size 116 - 78 - 105 and 15M.I badly need skins for a summer telemark skiing camp.Help!!! What do you guys recommend??
I bought 130mm for my Apache chiefs which are 126-100-117. They were a cinch to trim, but you could save some dough, and probably get close to the same climbing grip buying a size that fits the narrowest dimension of your ski and running them straight instead of cutting them to the perfect fit. That said, they climb like a Billy Goat.
I used a pair of Ascension skins for 6 or 7 years until they finally wore out, and loved them. I went to get a new pair of BD ascension skins this year and was really dissatisfied with the glue. I returned them and got these G3 skins. Not only did the glue work better in the east, but the design is cleaner and simpler. The main advantage is that you don't have an extra loop of fabric at the tip the way you do with the BD skins. A disadvantage is that you can't get the fit quite as tight as you can with the BD clipfix skins.
Bottem line: Product needs more work. I have used and cared for a set of BD Ascention skins for the past 10 years. As I am approaching the ripe old age of 60...new gear for our yearly week at Blanket Glacier must weigh less...G3 skins on Olin Outer Limits (old product but light and snappy) seemed a good change. G3 are much lighter than Ascentions. However, first day out noted glue failure at both tip and tails. Yoyo runs on Caribou Ridge were possible but the glue failure increased with each skinning up. If you did not have a warm cabin to return to each evening to dry out the skins, you would be in trouble. Our guide and host at Blanket indicated even worse problems were noted with these skins at cold temperatures. We were skiing hero powder at minus 3 to minus 6. Not recommended.
I love these skins, i put them on a pair of Volkl Gotamas. they were the first pair i every cut myself but the easy to use cutting tool that was included made it relatively painless i would highly suggest these skins to anyone looking to get off that resort
