G3 Targa Telemark Ski Binding

Count on the G3 Targa Telemark Ski Binding for your in- or out-of-bounds adventures. G3's TourThrow heel lever makes the Targa Telemark Ski Binding ideal for backcountry touring. Flip the Targa Telemark Binding's heel lever down for low cable-resistance during your uphill touring climbs, and flip the lever back up once you're ready to pounce on that hard-earned powder. The durable stainless steel components and a secure toe box design make this binding reliable season after season.

Bottom Line: G3’s Targa Telemark Ski Binding—time-tested and proven Telemark performance.

Review Title

Got these mounted on a pair of K2 World Piste boards, they are great. I have had to do very little to these bindings. The ice plates get scratched and will hold snow and once in a while all the fasteners need tightened... learned this the hard way at the base of Schweitzer Ski hill when the heel piece dropped off. I thought the day was shot... would have been if I didn't find the piece but the bindings have extra screws and nuts under the ice plates. Pulled out Swill Army knife and was running again in minutes! My girl has a pair of these too and she has ahd the same good luck.

To weak

By:

I used them for half a session and found that they didn't give me the response that i wanted being a highly aggressive skier. I went with the hammerheads they are a lot stiffer and have great lateral response and are practically bullet proof.

Yes, these bindings are exactly the same except for the spring cartridge.

Buy (and carry) spare parts

By:
September 2, 2009

and you're going to need a few tools, too--a regular screwdriver, a small/medium phillips, and a posi-drive, not to mention possibly a pair of pliers if the cable is crimped into the binding with the guide on one side or the other--in order to fix your binding if it breaks while you're in the backcountry (like what happened to me in the attached photo). I didn't have a spare cable, so I got to ski out on one ski...not the run I was looking forward to while skinning up.

Not a Fan

By:

Feels way too neutral, if not weak in transitioning power from your step to your ski. The cartridges also need more maintenance than my girlfriend; I had to constantly play with the settings. Plus, when you are standing still the binding tends to lift up your heel by about a cm or so. Really annoying. I would suggest Voile if you like neutral feeling, and if you want power, go to a Hammerhead.

Almost everything works

I'm with Ron. The heel throws are problematic, to say the least. I've got three pairs of these bindings, but probably won't buy them again (but damn, they're a good deal). The heel piece will allow you to install two heights of climbing bars, but if you do this, the rear throw will collapse while you're skinning after just a few uses (it's simple physics, don't ask me why G3 hasn't figured it out after all these years). Furthermore, the "ice-free plate" that goes over the heel piece doesn't fit if you have more than one climbing bar installed--another stupid design flaw they should have fixed years ago. The material they use on the ice-free plate is also pretty fragile--I've got chips and chunks missing from a pair used for 1.5 seasons.

After years of skiing on the X-mountain cartridges, a couple of friends convinced me to upgrade to the world cups--holy moley, if you have any intentions of being a decent telemarker, get the world cups. It doesn't even matter how much you weigh--one of the people who converted me can't weigh over 115 #, and her husband is around 195 #, and both swear by these bindings.

Do I need to buy the binding shims when I buy these bindings

Do I need to buy the binding shims when I buy these bindings or do the bindings come as pictured?

The bindings come with everything in the picture. If the risers that come with the bindings don't provide you with enough lift-- then you will need to buy the relatively inexpensive shims. . .

Depends on what kind of skiing you do..

These are great for the resort but if you do a lot of backcountry go with a binding that has a touring option- like the voile switchback or BD O1. I just bought the switchback this year to replace these and I was amazed at how much better it was with the touring mode- I never thought it would make that big of a difference! but it does- never going back. I immediately sold both sets of my G3 targas. I gave the binding four stars because it works great for the resort, it very light, and I never had one break. Supposing they do break in the backcountry they are very easy to fix in the field.

Close, but no cigar

By:

Don't get me wrong, the bindings themselves are great. But why settle for great when you can have the best? These were the bindings I started on before upgrading to the BD O2, and they just don't compare. The cartridge flex gives out when your knee is close to the ski, they're not as stable, and I'm sure everyone here has gotten the cartridge stuck under the boot putting it on, especially on big boots. Pay the extra 10 bucks and get the Black Diamonds.

Gets the job done

By:
January 8, 2009

This is a very solid binding. I have broke 1 cable and the plastic off of the heel piece ( which doesn't do much) in about 200 days skiing. The cartridges don't provide a ton of stiffness but if your looking for a light weight, bomber binding with more of a neutral feel then you have found the perfect match.

Great so far.

By:
January 4, 2009

Im new to tele so I cant say this with great experience...but I really like these. With my T2X's these are very light weight for short to medium tours but still allow me to charge when I feel the urge. The cartridges make some noise occasionally but everything seems to be holding up very well after a few months of relatively hard use. Bought the climbing wires for the steeps and they make a huge difference-same as the AT setups...

depends on your boot

with a scarpa, never had a problem. other then breaking every now and again. does not work with the new black diamond boots. the flex just doesnt jive. if you have a more straight across flex, try the black diamond bindings. if you have a 27 boot size, give or take a size, dont get the o2. get the o1.

Fine for lightweights

By:
February 4, 2009

I've owned these for 4 years and they've held up OK. I've broken both heel throws and a heel plate. G3 has great customer service and replaced the broken throws free of charge. I'm giving these to my wife and I'm going with hammerheads.. a much stouter binding.
