Deuter ACT Lite 50+10 Backpack - 3050cu in

The ACT Lite 50+10 Backpack uses Deuter’s Vari-Quick harness system and Hollow-core X stays to easily support 40-pound loads for long-distance hikes. Two lid pockets and two side mesh pockets help you keep the little stuff from disappearing in the 3050cu inch main compartment. I'm comparing two packs that fit the bill: The Osprey Atmos 50 and the Dueter ACT Lite 50+10. Which would you buy AND Why? ( Did I mention to please include why you would buy/use one over the other?) Thanks!

Diver, it comes down to how much you're going to be carrying, how long you'll be carrying, and what weather you expect. Firstly, how much you carry with both packs is important because if overloaded the pack will never fit you correctly and the straps will slip and you will be readjusting two times for every one step you take. It's no fun and even though I wasn't overloaded, the Deuter slipped the straps way too much. Two pals thruhiked the AT with the Atmos and loved it because of all the features it had including the mesh panel on the back which kept the actual backpack from making too much contact with their back so they would stay cool in the hot hot months. If you are going a long distance, you will shed packweight and want something small and manageable, which in this case, is the Atmos. If this pack made it through the AT, did well in the hot, hot heat, and is lighter than the Deuter, I think the answer is obvious which one you should choose. I personally still haven't gotten over a 3-day hike in which I had to readjust my Deuter pack 10 times every mile. The Atmos is also tougher, that Cordura is the bomb.

Absolutely phenomenal pack. I tried the Kestral 48 and the Atmos 50, which had the features I was looking for but the straps were killer on my shoulders if I was carrying a loaded pack. I tried a Gregory Z55, which had more comfortable straps but was a bit minimalist in terms of features. This Deuter was my answer.

It was extremely hard to find a local Deuter dealer to try it on in person, but once I found this pack, I was instantly blown away. Extremely comfortable, great amount of padding. Perfect size for a variety of trip lengths. Bombproof materials. One size fits all, meaning you can adjust exactly where you want the should straps on the back panel. Great airflow.

I was confused a little at first by the "50+10"... it is 50L but it has an inner flap that can raise up past the top of the pack to add an extra 10L, and the top flap can adjust up and down to accomodate for the extra size.

Also to note, the sleeping bag compartment divider can zip off if you don't want to use it.

This is the best pack that I've ever laid eyes on. I'm glad I didn't overlook just because it was hard to find in stores to see it in person first. Great purchase, and look forward to many more trips with it.

Funny you should ask, because I just measured mine. Continental's carry-on restrictions are 45 linear inches (length + width + height). The dimensions of this bag are 23 + 11 +~ 10, which equals 44".

So, unless you have it overstuffed or if you use the 10L extension, you can get away with it :)
