THESE ARE AMAZING!

By:
November 10, 2009

I ordered one pair of these about four months ago and have been using them in the mountains of Afghanistan about every other day since then. Even with only being able to wash them about once every 5 wears (on average, 14 hours a wear) they are incredible. Great feel, they don't get crusty, don't absorb a smell and they have kept their shape better than any other sock I've owned. I just ordered four more pair and I'm excited for them even though these are holding up amazingly. I have another pair of socks from another company that are a different 'PAT'ern and am so much happier with these.

I wear a size 12 and ordered the Large and they fit beautifully!

Sure, I like them

By:

I was a long-time wool socks with poly-pro liners hiker. Until SmartWool, which, for me was a sock revolution. I saw these while browsing for Smartwool, and decided to give them a shot.
Yeah, I like them. If I'd never had Smartwool, I'd probably marry these socks. But I guess I'm already married to SW--which I still chose over these.

Compared to SW, they seem scratchier. I certainly haven't worn them enough to tell you about longeveity.
I do have a suspicion that these socks will hold up better, though.

I have a narrow foot and find that socks that are for men and women are too bulky. Does Darn Tough have socks for women?

Dorothy, I have what I call a crow foot for a man. Size 9 very slim and narrow foot. I bought a size large pair in these socks to try out and see how they woulf fit thinking that they probably would be too large, but I'd rather too large than too small...obviously. The large hug my crow feet very well and I luv these socks so much that I bought the last two pair of celery green (hehe) pairs that they had left. I will definitely be buying up a few more pairs of these, although I'm sad bout the celery green color disct. (I'm a hunter and love the camo aspect of the colors). But to answer your overall question I would not be scared to buy these socks as a woman cuz if the large snugly fit my crow feet then I am sure they will do you well! Did I mention I LUV these socks? BC does have some women's socks listed for Darn Tough, but as I said...even the unisex should be fine!

Great Socks...

By:
November 4, 2009

I have worn all types of socks...from Wigwam and Smartwool, and most brands in between. I have found them all good, but I have yet to find any that fit as nicely and that are as comfortable as the Darn Tough line. The seems are perfect and the longer ones don't constrict your calf at all, yet they will stay in place. Great socks for the money..

comfortable, but not for multi-use

By:
May 19, 2009

I have put many types and brands of socks to the test on my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and these were one. They are very comfortable, but they just dont last long periods of time without being washed often. They get hard after a day or two, and after only 2 weeks of using them, there was a giant hole in the back. They replaced them for free as they have a lifetime guarantee, but if you're looking for a sock where you are going to be doing long term backpacking and don't have access to a washing machine often, go with the smartwool adrenaline series. Through all my testing, those have by far been the best for what I need.

slave to BC

By:
April 10, 2009

Already reviewed these socks but got email from BC wanting me to review this item (I guess based on the last order I made for them). Only thing I guess I could add is that I put these socks to the dirty test. As already noted in my last review my feet sweat badly most of the time and we all know the ill effects of that, lol. However, I recently wore a pair of these socks through a 12 hour shift, hopped in my van and drove 12 hours to see a physician, stayed at a buddy's house that night, made that 12 hour drive back home and straight into another 12 hour shift. When I finally got home after these three days of wearing the same socks in my brand new Merrell Outlands I was surprised to find when I finally took them off that my feet stayed dry the whole time (they didnt peel off, lol), didn't stink and my new shoe smell was still in tact. I simply LUV these socks...

can't say enough good things about 'em!!!

wonderful socks

By:
March 27, 2009

Bought these socks based on the reviews here. I've never given thought to wool socks until I started gearing up for the AT. I knew I would need soome wools to help keep my feet dry thru long hot hikes. Never before would I have ever given thought to spending over ten bux on a single pair of socks, but then I do realise that comfort for feet are priceless in the outdoors. I have to say I am converted. Its going to hurt economically but I gotta get me a pair for each day of the week. These socks are soo comfortable I just love wearing them. My feet typically sweat alot so I hate having on socks all the time but these are great to wear and keep my feet dry. I even wore these socks to a concert last night (Black Label Society) in one of those rough crowds of drunken bikers with lots of pushing and shoving....in other words it was one of those concerts I normally come out sweaty as hell. Well, I can attest that while the rest of me was dripping with sweat my feet were comfy and dry. Even on that unforgiving concrete floor for 8 hours these socks added padding and comfort. If you're in the market for a good pair of woolies, I highly recommend these. Also, although I have only had them a few weeks I can see why they are called darn tough cuz they look and feel as though they can withstand alot.

I wore these 7 days in a row backpacking 8 miles a day. Comfortable each day. No loss of elasticity or structure. Wicks moisture very well.

Feet big fans!

By:
June 1, 2009

I did a similar, shorter interval test as Ian. I got four different brands of merino wool hiking socks and wore them in gaiter-less trailblazing excursions in the ice-ravaged Ozarks. Of the four pair, I preferred the performance (fit, durability, and comfort) of the Darn Tough. Not saying you will get the sane results over the long haul, but I likey heap big!

Best socks in my drawer

By:
March 2, 2009

Great weight to warmth ratio, they breath well and are very durable. I've had them for about a year now and they show almost no wear despite being the first socks I reach for when I'm in need of merino wool socks. I own quite a few smart wools and quite a few of cabelas merino wool socks. Now if they would only make this sock in a crew sock or something that came to just above my boot tops, which is the reason I own the cabelas socks.

Comfort

By:
March 31, 2008

Let me start by saying that I bought three pairs of these socks based on other people's reviews so I was not expecting these to be the most comfortable socks I have ever owned.

These are worth the money and are very comfortable.
