How well does it stay on without a waist strap?

Pretty well. It would definitely be more stable with a waist strap but I wear this pack on all-mountain and DH rides and it does the job. Biggest gripe is the design of dakine's chest strap that seems to pop off where it clips to the shoulder strap pretty often.

I got this for a friend for his 40th birthday. He's been getting into day hikes and I thought he should stay well hydrated. Looked like good construction and has room for a light jacket, camera and food for the day with a little room to spare.
