DAKINE Cougar Glove - Women's - 2008

DAKINE pulled out all the top-shelf materials and made the Women’s Cougar Glove with a Durafuse leather palm and waterproof breathable Gore-Tex membrane for serious weather. Ride the resorts and the backcountry no matter how nasty the storm. Your hands stay warm, dry, and comfortable in these form-fitted gloves. DAKINE uses Primaloft insulation to keep your digits toasty even in mid-winter chill, and you can even add a heat pack to the internal pocket if you need a bit of extra warmth.

Bottom Line: Top of the line for the season’s coldest days.

Quite a gem..and WARM!

By:
March 16, 2009

FYI: The Tech specs on your website says: “Goggle wipe: No” and “Manufacturer Warranty: Lifetime.” There is a goggle wipe on the left thumb and the package states goggle wipe and a two-year warranty. You have another version of Cougar glove, so the specs may have been mixed up.

I don’t ski, yet wanted a very warm glove for when I stand outside in the low 30’s or 20’s --sometimes with a wind-chill into the teens while I wait for my outdoor job assignment. Once I start working in these conditions, I warm up and the glove comes off where I switch to a work glove or no glove at all.

That being said, I still wanted a quality glove with quality materials. I read extensive reviews and talked to the great folks at Backcountry for their opinions. I ordered this glove and three other types of gloves to compare. Since all I had to do was stand outside, it was pretty easy to make my decision.

The Cougar is very warm, fits well, true to size, and is packed with insulation. For you skiers on lifts and for me mostly just standing, the internal heat pocket is a huge plus. If I have to stand around for an hour, that pocket will come in handy (no pun intended).

There’s only single stitching at the base of the thumb, which may or may not come apart if I were to use it repeatedly for skiing or other gripping activity. The rest of the glove is made very well. I haven’t had it on and off enough to say if the liner gets bunched up like the other reviewer experienced. Gore tex and Primaloft materials make this glove a good choice especially for it’s pricing point on sale. Backcountry recommended this one because of the materials and this is quite a gem of a find in the mountain of glove choices out there.

I don’t like the “girly” Dakine embroidery so I just used a black sharpie marker to cover it up. I also don’t like the marketing term “Girls specific design” that Dakine favors. I am a woman, just as you men are not boys.

FYI: Hestra XCR, Burton AK 3L Throttle, and Burton AK Oven Mitten were my other “trial” gloves. My feedback on those:

The Hestra XCR’s construction, stitching and fit are superior to any glove I’ve ever seen. I wanted them to be the warmest, because of the high quality construction. I know it may be hard to believe, yet they are surprisingly not as warm as this Cougar in my test conditions! Note also there are some reviews of the Hestra XCR that said they weren’t as warm as their advertising stated.

The Burton AK 3L’s were a close second to the Cougar, yet also not as warm. It has excellent construction and would have been my choice if I had to use the glove in active conditions and/or to hold onto things. The fact is has two liners is another plus, yet there’s not an internal or external heat pocket.

The Burton AK Oven Mittens are the absolute warmest of all, and all the reviews on this website say the same. Because of the great sale prices, I kept the Cougar and the Burton Mittens. I can use the Cougars to drive with, or just to and from places when outside, etc. I’ll pull out the mittens if I’m in colder conditions.

Good gloves

Warm gloves fit well to keep your hands dry... The liner tends to bunch up when you put them on after wearing them for sometime. Overall good glove.
