The DAKINE Super Tune Kit includes everything you need to give your ride(s) a tip-to-tail tuning job for the next day's early morning departure. This zippered bag holds an adjustable-temperature iron, wax, scrapers, files, P-tex, and on, and on, and on. When you're done using the DAKINE Super Tune Kit, your board or skis (and likely all of your friends' decks) will ride just like new.
Bottom Line: You could open up your own shop with this kit.
I love this kit! It is definitley worth the Price. It comes with just about everything you need. I would get a different brush though. The wire brush that comes with it isn't all that great. The iron works really well. If you like to tune and take care of your own equipment, buy this kit...you won't be dissapointed.
The DAKINE Super Tune Tuning Kit has most of what you need. I'd grab this and supplement with a nylon and wire brush (the included wire brush leaves something to be desired). Base cleaner would be good as well. But, the iron is working great so far and the edge tool is prefectly fine. You get a lot more for your money with this kit than you would if the stuff had Swix written on it, and most of the pieces are the same.
Is this the best kit (or at least a good one) for someone who's never tuned/waxed their board before? Does it have all the essentials? Can anyone recommend any others?
The iron is a step up from an old household iron, much easier to use. The scotchbrite pad is a little unnecessary if you have a cork, and the included wax is a little weak. But for the iron, file, stone, edge tool, scraper, case, and ptex its a great kit. I now only take my stuff to the shop for base grinds and binding issues
So if I'm looking to get this as a gift for a 'super ski geek' (telemarker, etc)... Should I get the dakine kit, or a different one? Pros/Cons? Anyone?
Being a telemarker doesn't automatically make you a "super ski geek". This is a great kit though, as long as the recipient of the gift knows what they're doing when they tune.
listen to what tommy said i second everything he said and then some lets just say ud b a fool if u diidnt tune ur friends boards for real cheap....i do edges and hot wax for 10 and lets just say after 1 week i paid for the kit and then some....and some people will even be stupid enuff to not do it on there own...oh well
Good kit, really has pretty much everything you need to up your performance on the mountain. Would benefit from a file holder. Had to sharpen the bottom edge the old fashion way. Otherwise a bargain for the price.
For the price of getting an iron alone, this kit isn't bad. It gets the job done. The iron is easy to use and has some insturctions for n00b proofing. I do suggest some different wax. Also, complete the kit with some base cleaner (Dakine also has some that work well, and smell like oranges).
This kit is pretty basic but is pretty much worth the price alone for the iron. It's got all the necessities. Unless your racing this kit is more than up to the task of keeping your skis and boards tuned up and running well.
The kit is good for the price, but you'll probably need get a couple more essential items to be able to fully tune your board. For example, the kit only includes a side edge file guide which gives you the options of 88 and 90 degrees (you're going to need another side file guide if you want any other angles). So I would recommend getting a base file guide so you can get an accurate measurement when filing your base edge. I would also recommend getting a diamond stone, gummy stone, and microfiber towel. There is more you can add to this kit, but I'd say that with the kit and all that stuff I named, you'd be in pretty good shape.
