If you're heading into the backcountry but don't want a massive load on your back, look to the DAKINE Heli Pro 20L Backpack. With 1200 cubic inches of interior space, it gives you a not-too big, but not-too small option for forays into the great white yonder. So pack some extra clothes and a lunch into the main compartment, slide your avie shovel and probe into the quick-access front pocket, and skin up. If you have to hike, strap your board(s) in the ski or snowboard carry systems. DAKINE tricked out this pack with a fleece-lined goggle pocket, a waterproof camera pocket, and an insulated sleeve for your hydration system.
Bottom Line: DAKINE's powerhouse pack for day trips into the backcountry.
Dakine Heli Pro or BD Covert? I just got the covert but don't love the lack of features and am thinking of sending it back for a heli pro. both get good reviews but what everyone out there do? (I ski in CO and do LOTS of hiking hauling gotamas to all areas....) Any suggestions would be helpful thanks!
This pack hauls. It has tons of space without being bulky, and is really comfortable. It does what it should do, plain and simple. It's pretty adjustable, carries skis nicely, and has enough room for whatever you're carrying. The internal bladder pocket is great and the zippered strap compartment for the mouthpiece keeps the tube from freezing. The straps are all rather long, but a pair of scissors or some duct tape fixes that and allows you to dial in your fit. Great colors too. Overall great pack.
This pack is my go to pack for inbounds and slackcountry skiing. Super comfortable and great fit. Fits some snacks, a nalgene or a bladder, an insulator jacket, video camera, probe, and shovel as well. Super durable as well. Only complaint is that if you have some super fat skis, more than 125 or so in the tail, you won't be able to use the diagonal carry system. Other than that this pack is sweet.
its made to carry snowboards and skis...so yes the longboard will fit fine, vertically and horozontaly...i hate this for school tho, theres only 3 main pockets and its considerbaly small, no space or organization
This'll be fine for everyday school use, but it definitely will not carry a 43" longboard inside it. You can probably strap it to the outside, but it's not going to fit inside.
I love this pack. It's very form fitting and so movement never gets restricted. Plus, the new one can fit any fat skis i've ever tried to put on it. If only it had one extra pocket on the outside...
I have an older version of the heli pro, its from 2 years ago. I love the pack, the only complaint I have is it doesn't like to carry fat skis. I ride Gotamas, and when they are strapped on diagonally they take a lot of room away from the pack. And by a lot I mean a lot, like almost have to empty the pack. So if you ride fatties you have to strap 'em side by side where you would put a snowboard, which is fine, but kinda annoying.
Shovel head barely fits (i have a bca), handle goes on the side of the pack. As for a probe I have no idea how a probe could ever fit into that pocket.
this back pack is real good!!! love the ski carry cuz it really helps. if you want people to stare at you get the backpack! i can put so much stuff!!! i fit 2 pairs of socks, pants, underarmors, and even my helmet!! only bad thing is if you got some big skis (you won't be able to fit them on the carry system.) but great backpack and sweet style!
as a girl I was originally looking at the women's heli pro, but I really like the white that the original one comes in. i'm about 5'5" so i was looking for the 16L in white thinking the smaller size would probably fit me better. but i've have had issues finding somewhere that actually carries the white 16L. how much difference is there in size between the two? would the 20L truly be too big/bulky for me?
Good pack, has plenty of room for food and other junk. Can hold reasonably wide skis- 140mm shoveled Seths fit throught the loops. The camera pocket on the waist is kind of small.
A buddy of mine left this pack to me, and over the past few seasons, I haven't noticed it turning any other color than white (i.e. no yellowing of the fabric). As Angus pointed out, it will get dirty with dirt, grease, oil stains, etc., but that is just the name of the game. Crisply white will be something you can shoot for on your own!
deceptively comfortable pack. At first look i didnt think this pack would be comfortable with those thin straps, I was wrong. fully loaded the pack carriers very well. I ride and carry salomon guns and I have found no issues with carrying these skis.
this pack can only fit so much...and even when its loaded to full capacity it doesnt feel bulky at all, and the straps compress your load A LOT...on the lift its fine, doesnt feel uncomfortable or like your goin to fall off lift, its kinda like having a nice cushion actually :-)...its a very low profile compressed pack thats awesome!
I use this pack to 'pro-spectate' at the big mountain freeskiing competitions, and it is useful in carrying everything a pro-spectator would need in a day of watching people shred cliff lines. I carry a lot of stuff with me on these days, but this bag never feels bulky. It has a low profile fit and the straps help to keep everything in check.
I've been using this bag for 2 years. Don't wear it everyday, but it is super useful for accessing inbounds backcountry (i.e. hiking relatively short distances with your skis) and also short day trips (Tuckerman's Ravine). I use the integrated hydration system pretty often as well, but days that I am at smaller resorts I typically use a Camelbak Zoid instead to minimize bulk. This thing has taken a beating though and has held up incredibly well. I've taken it on 4/5 trips out West (I'm an EC skier) and have skied 50+ days with it in the past 2 years and all the functional components of the bag work as they did on day 1 (although it could probably use a wash!).
The name alone represents their product. This pack is perfect for my day trips into the backcountry and has room inside for my probe, shovel, helmet, and lunch... It has gotten me through a lot and sometimes I forget its there while I'm skiing.
Does this bag carry a wide snowboard? I have a Dakine Mission pack which does with the straps all the way loosened. If this bag does not carry a wide snowboard, does anyone know of one that does?
I bought my first Dakine pack back in 2000(I think) and the product was pretty unique then. These days there are lots of options for snow-dedicated packs, so Dakine have to step it up....and largely they do. I have had my Heli Pro for 4 years and the design these days it a little different. I have to say, from what I have seen, the new pack is better than mine. They can be a little over complicated to use - the amount of straps drives me crazy, most folk will only ever use them in-bounds anyway. Worse than the amount of straps is the fact that most of them are not easily tucked away, making them easily caught on almost anything(read:chairlifts). The Heli Pro I have has several waterproof areas, a space for a camelback hydration bladder, the ability to carry skis/board. It is all very well made and seems to be lasting very well - mine certainly looks as good as new. I would say that the Heli Pro is a bargain but just watch out for those straps !
I finally decided to upgrade from my 2000 version of this same pack, and am so glad I did it. This bag does it all! My camelbak fits into it perfectly and the insulated tube strap is super convenient. I love how all of the straps pack into the bag out of the way. And, most importantly, this bag does what it is supposed to do, holds a ton of stuff without being bulky. Without a doubt, one of my most valuable pieces of equipment.
First off, I bought this for short side-country tours and for a day pack for inbounds skiing. Its perfect. It'll carry all of my avy gear, plus a few extra layers, and then my full-size dSLR in the top of the pack. For resort skiing, it might be a little overkill with all the features, but its light and well-made- and perfect for my dSLR and a few granola bars. So far it seems to be well made and durable (I've only carried skis and gear a few times), and it carries my 110mm waisted skis just fine in the diagonal straps.
i saw the review above and the guy saying that it is anoying to carry fatties on this backpack. i have the libery helix 105mm waist. would the same go for them, is this pack to small to carry them?
I went to REI and stuck various skis inside the carry loop- The new 107 waist Seth fit no problem, and Hellbents with 120+mm waist fit with few problems. Realistically anything under 130mm should fit fine.
This pack is sweet for snowboarding. Very comfortable I hardly even notice it. With the waist and chest straps it make this pack a very versatile pack, nice for day hikes, snowboarding, riding motorcycles, and even walking around San Fransisco. I never had my water freeze even when I was at Whistler. The felt pouch for your glasses is very nice, though i wished it was bigger for my larger goggles. I recommend this pack to everyone that love's the outdoors.
it all depends on how much you want tot carry. If i were you, i would go for the 20L, its not that much bigger but you may find that the 4L will really make a difference.
Excellent pack. Very comfortable/adjustable. I am much smaller than recommended, but was able to fit the pack perfectly. So comfortable I forgot I was wearing it. Fit all the gear (shovel, probe, extra clothes, hydration bladder, lunch, and snacks). Does not have an inner pocket to separate lunch from other items, so I used the goggle pocket for that. Waist strap pocket great for cell phone and things you need to reach frequently. Constructed well.
I'm trying to decide between the Heli Pro 20L and Dakine Baker pack. My use will be backcountry snowboarding (light day trips) and I'm about 6'2". Will one fit my torso better? Are the shoulder and hip straps any different in terms of construction and quality?
I think that the Heli Pro 20L would fit your frame better, and I'm pretty sure the shoulder straps and hip straps are the same. The Baker pack is only 16 liters though, so I really think it may be too small for you. I like the horizontal board carry of the Heli Pro too. Good for short hikes, and makes an awesome make-shift butt pad. :)
I love the new Heli Pro but the belt tends to get annoying when just using the bag for school. I'm still waiting for the snow fall to go test it out for its sole purpose. HURRY UP SNOW!!! Still, it holds a lot of books and is comfortable at the same time. It has tons of straps and features. I don't see myself using the quick-draw ice axe holder though lol. But that's just me.
Just gives you the option of clipping stuff to the outside if you want it to be handy without taking the pack off or it won't fit in the pack. Water bottle, gloves, helmet, that kind of thing.
This bag is great. It has enough room for tools for backcountry, has enough room for a few other things like sandwiches and extra layers if you feel you might need them. The ski straps are great to strap ski's to. Also the Hydration pocket is a great extra. It's great. I also has a lot of room for other things too.
I use it as my school backpack and it hauls everything just fine as long as you aren't hauling huge text books and binders.Although you see these everywhere on college campuses I would not consider this an ideal book bag. that is unless you like little room for actually carrying books and like your pens and pencils to be jumbled up in the bottom of an organized pocket.
This bag is awesome...my sister and friend both had one and they persuaded me to get it, and i love it. The bag is very comfortable to wear and it doesnt hang off your back far, there aren't a lot of straps that hang to far to get caught somewhere. I would recommend this bag to any one that skis and owns their own pair...and even if they dont i would still buy it.
The moon gets really really cold, and really really hot. not much atmosphere. so uh, it depends. planning on taking a trip?True. The moon does have some crazy temperatures. The shoulder strap is meant to keep your camelback tube insulated. If it doesn't camelback does make bladders with an insulated tube and nozzle, so they don't freeze which could easily go into the pack. Just be sure to suck all the water out of the nozzle after you lock the flow valve, because it might still freeze. I could totally take one to the moon. Without a doubt.
