The winter-ready DAKINE Heli Pack has just enough room to carry the bare essentials for a safe and successful backcountry trip. Whether you ski or snowboard, the Heli Pack caries your plank(s) as you plod up the last few hundred feet of ridge to your chosen line. In addition to 600cu inches of cargo space, this DAKINE pack includes a front helmet slot for your brain bucket. It even has an insulated sleeve to keep your favorite hydration system from freezing solid.
Bottom Line: If quick, before-work tours and out-of-bounds runs at the resort are your bag, the DAKINE Heli Pack should be on your back.
I've had this pack for two years now and love it. Its great for light duty backcountry work and is so light I forget it's on. The pack has enough room to carry skis, a shovel and possibly aprobe. I can also store snacks , cameras, or anything else that isn't too large.
Great pack - even for those of us that just stay in bounds 99% of the time. Holds just enough gear for keeping extra layers and a lunch for a day on the slopes. I haven't had a chance to test the diagonal ski carry, I only hike when the conditions warrant.
The tube is freeze-resistant, but certainly not freeze proof on the coldest days or during night skiing.
I had an issue where the tube would disconnect from the reservoir - Dakine sent me a replacement reservoir and tube under warranty without issue.
The DAKINE Heli Pack is a perfect backcountry companion. It will hold a shovel and a probe and pretty much nothing else except maybe a granola bar or two and some water. This pack is designed for the backcountry skier who doesn't like to wear a pack. It is great for taking laps in resort accessed out-of-bounds where you don't need anything more than your shovel, probe and a beacon.
Great day pack for small backcountry trips and in-bounds resort skiing. Makes sure to buy the insulated camelbak sleeve to prevent freeze up in the tube. For more serious backcountry stuff you're going to want something with more space.
This pack is everything that a pack should be; functional - there are a ton of straps, pockets and hideaway places for everything; comfortable - I've worn this pack for up to 5 hours at a time on my mountain bike and truly forgot it was there; and the olive green with the earth-tone plaid makes the pack look as good as it performs.
