Crumpler Mahoubar Messenger Bag - 2008

Whether you’re heading off to school or rollin’ down to the beach to chill with your bros, throw your gear in the Crumpler Mahoubar Messenger Bag. This messenger bag looks more like a backpack with two straps to center the bag on your back, but the peeps at Crumpler called it a messenger, and so shall we. The chest strap and waist belt steady heavy loads, and the large main compartment fits your books for school or a twelve pack for the beach. Six organizational pockets keep your doo-dads separate from your gadgets, and a water-resistant top flap prevents ocean spray or light rain from mucking up your stuff.

Bottom Line: Give your gear a place to snuggle.

Poorly accessible capacity

By:
May 17, 2009

This bag claims a pretty decent capacity (24L), but I couldn't use perhaps 20% of it due to the idiotic design of the bag. The bag widens at the bottom, and some of the capacity is lost in crevasses that lead to the hip belt, like little hide-away spots, but totally useless. When not full, it sits very nicely against your back, but when it's full, it's not very comfortable. The lid flap is pretty good however. Also, what's up w/ no mesh on the back? Guys, if you want this to be a bike bag, PLEASE put some mesh on the back. I looked like I just swam after wearing this for 30 mins while biking in relatively cool weather. A better pack is something that has an airmesh. Of course, if you're a hipster, you'll probably love this bag. After all, it's called a "messenger bag." It also has a carry stap on the top, to which I fastened a lock and lost the key. So now I have lock right against my back. That's my fault.

Right up my alley!

By:
March 23, 2009

I use this bag everyday for my home/work/home bike commute. I believe that the space issue has a lot to do with organization. I pack my clothes for the day, a pair of shoes (quite often high heels), toiletry needs, my breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack on it. The Mahoubar stays put, and I am happy about it, most of bags I had before would torture my shoulders, and messenger bags with D cups aren't quite a match made in heaven. Until I can find something with the same features including its affordable price, me and my Mahoubar will definitely still be an item.

Large yes, roomy no, and uncomfortable

By:
March 17, 2009

Although large it doesn't seem to hold as much gear on my daily commute as my smaller day-pack I've been using for four years. But my main complaint is that it is very uncomfortable, especially with a heavier load. I tried packing a laptop, which pretty much took up all the space, and the straps were so painfully digging into my shoulders so that I just couldn't do it. Not enough padding I presume in the shoulder straps. The "cut" of the bag just doesn't seem right so that when the inside compartments are loaded the outer pockets are rendered useless. Sadly, because I really wanted it to work, I've RMA'd it to bonktown.

Not for Short Torsos

By:
April 27, 2009

Definitely not a good idea if you have a short torso.
Packs like the Ortleib Messenger that are shorter in length and place the load higher up sit far more comfortably on my back.
The shoulder padding is non existent, and the straps cut into your neck.
I can't vouch for its waterproofing, but the construction doesn't seem like it would stand up to a downpour well.
The layout of the bag makes it impossible to take full advantage of the interior space.
Also, the way it distributes weight makes me feel like I'm being pulled backwards.
I really wanted to like this bag, because I don't like how roll top bags like the orteib block my over the shoulder vision in traffic, but it's just far too uncomfortable for me.

Fathom This

By:

Reach your arm deep down into the mouth of this pack! This bag is unbelievable! Every pocket is so humanly proportioned, I feel like this pack is an extension of me. The quality of this pack and the other Crumpler I picked up (The Barney Rustle Blanket) has made me itch to start collecting Crumpler products. I am really into the way the bag does not feel like a backpack or messenger bag product, it really feels like a companion creature. The material feels so high-quality and the logo character has such bounce and vitality, I really can imagine this bag will be a good friend of mine for the coming years! In addition to the capacity and the well proportioned pockets and fantastic craftsmanship, this backpack is a dream to wear. It fits the body with such balance, I can't wait to see the places we will go together!
