Slip on Columbia Men's Olympia Softshell Bib when stormy weather demands increased coverage, but you don't want to be soaked in sweat on a long ascent. This technical shell bib keeps snow and wind out on powder days and breathes better than many hard shell bibs. Columbia's 2L Cyberstretch fabric moves with you when high stepping for a hold or dropping a knee on you teles. On the climb up, unzip the Olympia Softshell's long side vents for ventiliation, then zip up them up when you stop or come back down. Columbia gave this softshell bib pant reinforced cuff guards to prevent damage from crampons or skis.
Bottom Line: Protect yourself from gnarly weather in the stretchy, breathable Columbia Olympia Softshell Bib.
I was looking for some bibs that would fit my wife, but she wanted something light and comfortable, so the typical muontaineering bibs were out. I found the Olympia Softshell in men's, never did find a women's version. Fortunately the fit was pretty good, she went with a medium, she is 5'9", 135, built like a woman, so small waists and big hips :) The pants are well made, very stretchy, lots of pockets, nice gators, 3/4 zippers, beefy should straps. I would say that they have a typical fit for a bib, roomy seat, long inseam. Great deal for the price!
These pants are a major let down. After reading everything I could find I purchased the pants. I had to exchange them as the length to waist ration is wrong. I have a 34 waist and a Large is too tight. XL was right for waist but too long in the legs. I decided that the design was good enough to keep them as I really liked the design. Chapter two. These pants aren't waterproof. End of story. Soaked butt sitting on the lift. Tried it two damp days running as I couldn't believe it. Chapter three, final design flaws. The snaps at the cuff are already peeling the material away. They will fail soon. Also the fly zipper is too small. No, it's not like that, when you're covered with long johns, fleece etc you have to have some access...clearance... you get the picture.
I love Columbia products, design, durability. they blew it on this one.
I just wore these bibs for six days running in Steamboat. Temps went from single digits to the low 30's. I wore them with only heavy weight thermals underneath and NEVER got cold. The best thing I can say about any piece of equipment is that it was invisible and these fit that bill perfectly. They never bound or hindered movement. I am 5'10" and about 180 lbs and the mediums fit perfectly. Only downside is the thigh vents don't have snow mesh in them. All things considered a small setback for a great set of bibs.
These bibs are great. I sweat regardless of what I wear but these allow the moisture out better than anything else I have tried. The side zips are well positioned to work great ventilating my overheating legs. While active hiking up ridges or snowshoeing mixed terrain I have been wearing silk-weight tops and bottoms under the Columbia bibs. I sweat, the silk wicks and this fabric does a better-than-average job of getting that heat and moisture away from my body. I bought the large because I am wide at the waist. At 5'9" the inseam is just a little long for me but the legs bunch well over my boots and do not drag. The integrated snow gaiter-cuff works very well keeping both fluffy snow and sloppy slush away. Unlike many suspenders, these are very adjustable and well angled so they have not yet fallen off my shoulders even when wallowing in deep snow after I fall skiing. Front slash pockets have a warm fleecy lining, back pockets close with hook tabs and are plenty deep to stash a spare hat or gloves or dog treats. Vertical chest zip pocket is perfect for the point 'n shoot digi camera. They are a little bulky to carry in the pack so it has become my habit to dress lightly and always don my bibs when I know I am headed for a snowy day of recreation.
This bib is excellent. Made out of the best material, lots of pockets, comfortable, affordable to an extent (but definitely worth every penny), and will keep you dry. I am glad I chose these pants, but I was in between sizes... I definitely should have sized down. Rather than that, I would recommend this product.
