Save weight by leaving the extra shorts at home and use Columbia's Challenger Convertible Pants for Women. The Challenger's light weight and wicking properties make them a great choice for summer backpacking and camping. Leave the legs on in the morning and zip them off to create shorts when the afternoon sun warms you up. They have an internal security pocket, plus they're easy to wash and dry quickly, so they're ideal for international travelers. Move from the backwoods to the city streets with these comfortable, stylish, and techy pants.
Bottom Line: It won't be a challenge to decide what to wear when you have the Columbia Challenger Convertible Pants.
I can always depend on Columbia having quality zip-offs, I've never had a problem yet. For a 5' petite, the shorts were a little long for me. As pants, they fit beautifully over hiking boots.
They have a side zipper on each leg and I had no problems getting them off over my hiking boots. Once removed, the legs fold up to about the size of a large pack of gum and fit nicely in the small pockets of my pack.
Most excellent fabric! Cool and thin, love it! I bought them for a trip to Moab, UT hiking in Arches National and they kept me cool and comfy in the heat. The size does run a little large through the legs though...I'm a big girl ranging from 175-180 pounds, 5'3" and first ordered an XL and had to return them and get a L. I was swimming in the XL! Overall though, LOVE these pants! Lots of cool little pockets AND they make my booty look nice! ha!
I ordered two pairs of these pants, not knowing whether the M or L talls would fit my lanky niece. The M fit her well and I tried on the L, which also fit me well, so I kept both pair. My niece actually works in the field doing bird research, climbing trees, plodding through swamps, etc. I'll let you know how they hold up on her. Mine will not get a good field test, but they are comfortable for the office and short bike rides so far. We really like the style and fit. They are definitely long (we're both almost 6'), almost too long, but I'm happy to have this to complain about.
this may be a stupid question but the size and length I need are only available in Bark or dark brown. Will this make a huge difference if I am backpacking in Yosemite in July, should I find a pant with a lighter more reflective color available? Thanks!
I left five stars since I didn't keep the pants and didn't want to change the rating- just wanted to give a heads up on size issues. It is really hard for me to find pants that fit, especially since I can't stand wearing pants on my stomach. If you want these to fit low on your hips then you will have to get a bigger size and just know it will be baggy around the rest of you. I also ordered a size smaller so that the rest of the pant fit me but then the waist went up over my belly button so I returned those as well.
These pants are great. The length is perfect, I'm glad they come in longer lengths. They are lightweight and dry quickly. Very comfortable to wear and they look good too. Need to get these in every color!
Where does the zipper stop/start on these pants? I bought a pair of convertibles once and the zipper stopped on the inner thigh--not exactly comfortable after a few miles of hiking!
I agree that the side pockets could be deeper. However, the fit is comfortable. The material so lightweight they dry in no time. Great for wearing in warmer climates when you want a little more protection than shorts. Very durable but nice enough to wear on business casual day at work. After splurging on my first pair of these pants, my only regret was that I hadn't bought more. Shortly after I got 3 more pair. Absolutely my favorite pants in my wardrobe.
The ankles can be opened, but not cinched. There's a velcro strip that runs lengthwise and one snap at the bottom. So they can open up if you'd like to fit them over a boot. But you can't adjust the ankle to make them tighter.
I just got a 2nd pair of these. They are lightweight and comfortable; I lived in my first pair most of the spring, summer and fall when I was not at my office job. I love that they convert to shorts and have side openings so I don't have to take off my boots to convert them. My complaint is the inadequate pockets. The front pockets are shallow so don't put anything you don't want to loose in them. The side pockets are tiny and one has a vertical zipper, I'm not sure what's up with that. I would love true cargo pockets; they might not look as nice but would be a lot more useful. The back pocket is good so put anything valuable in that one.
I really liked these pants because I wanted pants that fit at my natural waist rather than low on my hips. I bought them for hiking but they can be worn casually as well. They are very comfortable
I love these pants however I had to order 3 pair as they seemed slightly different in size. I used the size chart on the website and took my measurments. I ordered a large. The waist was quite a bit to big but I kept then anyway (a just-in-case pair). I also ordered a medium which was snugger and had me questioning whether I should try it. I did and it's working out fine. I ordered a few more pair but felt the sizes were a bit inconsistent. One was clearly mismarked a Med from the factory and the other seemed slightly smaller than the one I kept. I love the zipper pocket on the right leg and find it really convenient for my cell phone. The pants are light-weight and very comfortable.
The multiple pockets are nice, but I think the main side pockets could stand to be a little deeper, my pack of tissues almost falls out sometimes. Otherwise the fit is really nice and the pants are really durable.
Nice, light weight and quick dry convertible pants. Easy fit but not baggy (I hate baggy). Cool enough for summer hiking, wear them as shorts kayaking - they dry very quickly if you get wet. They run true to size and I appreciate the fact that they come in XS/regular length - which is hard to find. I highly recommend them!
These pants are really comfortable. My favorite feature is that they are actually long, when you order long. I am a tall chick so having pants that are not high-waters is a huge plus. They fit a little high on the hips, but not uncomfortably. The sizing chart is accurate.
