Columbia Caribou Mountain Down Coat - Boys' - 2008

Boys can totally sport the faux-fur-trim look, which is why Columbia made the Boys’ Caribou Mountain Down Coat with warm insulation and faux fur around the hood. Want to change up the look? Detach the trim or the entire hood. Low-puff down in this coat warms your boy’s torso without doubling his size, and wind- and water-resistant fabric helps battle the elements. The media pocket holds your kid’s music player.

Bottom Line: Low-puff down.

Remove the faux fur hood, then machine wash cold on gentle cycle. Tumble dry low. Per the instructions on the label. I haven't actually washed the coat yet as my son just got it.

"low-puff down" means low warmth

Looking for the warmest coat for my 5-year-old son I tried this one. Nice coat, and nice value at the sale price. But it's essentially a thin down jacket inside a sturdy shell; sounds like a good idea, but warmth is about loft, and this coat doesn't have much loft. I got a North Face McMurdo instead. Great customer service from Backcountry.com.

Well to some extent you get what you pay for, so the more expensive jackets will definitely have advantages, but they may not necessarily be in warmth. They could be lighter, more water/windproof, more durable, or any number of other things. This is a great jacket, even for the price, and it'll do a great job keeping your kid warm, but the more expensive ones may do it better.
