Who wants granola or oatmeal for breakfast on a camping trip when you can have scramblers or eggs in a nest? Pack a half dozen eggs in the Coleman Egg Carrier, and enjoy gourmet breakfasts wherever you are. This sturdy plastic container protects your eggs from getting crushed. A handle makes carrying to your propane stove easy.
Bottom Line: Omelets, over-easy, over-hard, poached, sunnyside up …
If you're going to pack fresh eggs into the backcountry, this carrier is a must. Eggs are carefully locked into position so they can't move about. Handle locks tightly closed. If you're @ all paranoid like I was @ first, stash the egg container in a plastic zip lock bag until you feel comfortable.
The US Department of Agriculture recommends constant refrigeration to avoid bacterial contamination and growth (salmonella). The USDA, in my opinion, is far more paranoid than is reasonable for the vast majority of consumers who have access to fresh or fairly fresh eggs (most grocery store eggs are fairly fresh). I regularly keep eggs out, unrefrigerated, for up to a week and have experienced no problems at all. Hard boiled, unshelled eggs will safely last about 1 - 2 days (probably longer) at room temperature. So, to answer your question: the USDA does not recommend unrefrigerated eggs, and my experience indicates eggs will last for at least a week unrefrigerated.
My girlfriend and I bought this because we thought it was a joke. But hey, we're going for a week in Glacier NP, so why not give it a try, right?
It worked! We now have two and they're staples on every backpacking trip or climb, even up Mt. Baker.
A word of advice, though: If you're taking this to a campsite where there will be other people smelling your breakfast, bring extra eggs. It's amazing what goodies a free-market economy will get you in the morning.
We got two of these (one for each of us) and they are sooo super cute! We used to just carry pre-boiled eggs in a plastic bag (to go with our bread and cheese on the trail), but nevermore. Now we can even pack fresh eggs for breakfast!
I've used a larger version of this in the past. I actually purchased two of these so if it's more than just the two of us or if we're preparing things that need more eggs we've got them. This small size is just the perfect number of eggs and doesn't take up so much space. I like the bright red color, makes it easy to find amongst everything else or when it's laying on the ground.
This egg carrier is the perfect size (honestly who needs 12 eggs!). I love the stabilzers inside that keep my eggs from rattling around and making a mess of my backpack.
Finally, I can take eggs with backpacking and camping! I have used this a bunch, and because the eggs can't move around, you don't need to worry about them breaking.
