Cloudveil Rayzar Jacket - Men's

The Cloudveil Men's Rayzar Jacket walks the fine line between storm shell and soft shell to give you protection from everything from summer days above the tree line to spring ski tours. Its Schoeller Dryskin Extreme fabric sheds wetness and breathes and stretches well. A lightweight fleece lining cuts the pre-dawn chill. The high collar and laminated cuffs keep the elements on the outside, and high chest pockets are accessible while wearing a harness. A zippered chest pocket with a headphone porthole keeps the tunes flowing.

Bottom Line: Spring corn, granite offwidths or muddy trails - the Rayzar handles whatever nature can dish out.

Review Title

I've used this jacket 30+ days per season for 4 seasons. Had it ripped off skiing in Argentina, so now I'm replacing it. This softshell works well in many conditions. PROS: pockets that actually fit climbng skins, light, fits under a hardshell for layering. CONS: cinch adjustments and velcro closures are low quality. jacket can rip on branches and rocks.

overall, good value...

Great softshell

By:

Top-notch skiing and around-town softshell. Usual cloudveil quality, and the schleller fabric works great as always. Arms are nice and long, and pocket placement is helpfully out of the way of movement. I find the hem falls just below my belt, but I'm 6'5" so it's probably a bit longer on most. There's probably enough room for a heavyweight capilene underneath, but I would call it pretty trim otherwise. Definitely too trim for a fleece jacket.

Movement and breathability

By:
October 3, 2008

Pluses include extreme breatheability and great freedom of movement; no restrictions or rise when shouldering a pack or tossing your boards over your shoulder. Very packable and dries quickly. I'm 6'3" with broad shoulder -- the Large is just about right with room for a heavyweight baselayer. Highly recommended if you need something to carry through 4 seasons without the extreme protection of a heavy dedicated shell.

Solid Softshell

By:
October 3, 2008

This is a great softshell ski jacket. The Schoeller fabric works great as usual, the arms are nice and long, good pocket placement and quality construction. The hem fall right at my waist, but I'm 6'5" so it's probably has a bit more overlap for most. There is room for a midweight top underneath, but I would say the fit is trim.

If you eat a bunch of McDonalds...

Returned it. Nicely constructed, good blend of different weight Schoeller textiles, but one big problem. The cut of the jacket is no good. The length is good, arm length is good, shoulders are good...but the body is cut for fat people. If you normally take clothes that are sized for an "athletic fit," this jacket will be way too big in the body for you. I am 5'11, 173 pounds, 32 inch waist, 42 inch chest.
