Chaco ZX/1 Unaweep Sandal - Women's

Chaco designed the ZX/1 Unaweep Sandals with a basket-weave style strap to provide an extra level of comfort by shaping more exactly to the contours of your feet. Chaco's self-cleaning lug pattern keeps rocks and dirt out while offering steady footing on dry trails or river beds. Chaco's BioCentric contoured footbed offers satisfying fit while the polyurethane fill creates a more manageable sole that is soft and light. The ZX/1 basket-weave strap configuration features an open toe so you can wear the sandals over neoprene booties in the river or socks at camp.

Bottom Line: Chaco's Z/X1's double-strap design creates a more accommodating design for individuals with shapely feet.

ZX/1 Unaweep Sandal is the Best!!

By:
May 15, 2007

A friend swears by these sandals, so decided to buy them. The sole that your foot sits on is a little rough at the beginning & it takes a little to adjust them, but that is temporary. My feet felt great all day long, and so easy to get on and off. Love these sandals - they are the best and maintenance is like nothing. They look good in jeans, shorts, skirts, & capris.

Love Them!

By:
October 22, 2009

This is my first pair of Chaco sandals, and I am so happy with them. It took a while to get the hang of the strap adjustments, but now I can do them like a pro. The sandals are comfortable and can be worn anywhere. I cannot wait to rough them up a little!

Anyone know anything about the difference between the vibram

Anyone know anything about the difference between the vibram sole version and the "stealth" sole version (both are zx/1)?

My understanding is that the "stealth" sole is a softer rubber. It is apparently somewhat "tachy" which may improve grip on smooth or wet rocks (the regular Vibram sole can be a little slick in rivers or on wet rocks). However, it is not non-marking. I would probably only get the stealth sole if I knew that I was going to often wearing the sandals in the water, and not spending much time indoors with them.

Comfortable & supportive

By:
August 22, 2008

I am hard on shoes, hard on my feet, have Morton's neuroma so few sandals are comfortable. The unaweep sandal is comfortable and supportive, perfect for my lifestyle. I appreciate the arch support and the secure feeling when strapped into the sandal. Once my foot is strapped in, it becomes one with the sandal and I don't have to worry about it slipping or having to grip it with my toes. (Hope that makes sense.) Great for hanging around town or the mountains.

Wonderful as always

By:
April 18, 2008

This is my 4th pair of Chacos and I love them as always. I am a high-school teacher and wanted some that look a bit more professional so the all black and thin straps do the job perfectly, and I am happy by the end of my 8-hour non-stop day of walking around the classroom.

Chaco sandals were previously made in China and assembled in Colorado. Over a year ago, the company moved both operations, making and assembling, to China.

ZX/1 Unaweep Sandal-Women's

By:
May 18, 2007

LOVED THESE!!!! I am a bit in between sizes, though I run more towards going up a size, rather than down. I also have medium width feet. For those like me, I would recommend going UP if in between sizes, rather than down. I would also recommend a wide width, verses the normal width.

Besides the amazing comfort of chaco, I LOVE Backcountry.com! I recently tried them out as a result of being less than impressed with my regular companies. I found the shipping here to be fast, the customer service is EXCELLENT, the selection is great, and there are great deals in the outlet section! I'm won over & am a future customer of backcountry! Try them out, you'll be more than impressed!

Better than my Tevas

By:
August 22, 2009

I bought these to travel around Vietnam for two weeks. It was very, very hot and humid. Some downpours and they left you wet and with some serious puddles to deal with. Knowing that was likely what I was in for before I left, I researched sport sandals and decided on these rather than my usual Tevas. Part of that decision is because I had to buy online as there are no stores near me that sell Chaco or a decent selection of Teva. Meaning, I couldn't try shoes on for comfort and fit before purchasing them. I didn't want to deal with return either. Because these sandals are so adjustable to your foot, I thought I would try them (and maybe not have to do a return). I was right!

I wore these at home for a bit to break them in. They really don't need breaking in.

I really like that all the straps are adjustable. But, if you get it wrong, it could lead to blistering. I got a blister early on during my trip on one spot on top of my left foot. I think the strap was too tight (even though I was comfortable) and certainly my foot swelled in that heat. It was quite a bit of trial and error after that to get the straps to a more proper fit on that foot. But, once I did, there were no further issues.

Anyway, these were great. They gave me confidence walking around. Dried more than fast enough after getting soaked. I recommend them to anyone. I also like the purple for a color choice. Quite subtle and went with all clothing colors. These shoes are also versatile as to what you can wear them with...which is pretty much anything except a cocktail dress.

Hey Tamie, if at all possible try them on before buying, as Chaco sandals only come in whole sizes, not half. I also wear an 8.5 and like my z/1 in a size 9, as I like the extra room up front (helps keep sticks/rocks off my toes). This is definitely a shoe where you don't want your toes right at the edge of the sole!

I really like these shoes. Very cute and comfortable. However, I'm between sizes and ordered a size up--because I read one of these reviews. I had to send the bigger size back because the arch was too far forward and there was too much toe room. My advice would be to order a size smaller or try them on before buying!!

Well worth the price

By:
May 7, 2009

I use my ZX/1 sandals as my primary hiking footwear AND travel footwear! They're stylish enough for around town (large cities excepted) and if I take an impromptu hike they stay on my feet much better than my Birkenstocks.

The system of self-adjusting straps can be confusing, but once you get the hang of it it's really nice to change the fit to fit the conditions (eg, with/without socks, neoprene booties, kicking around town, bouldering)

My first pair lasted years, and when the straps finally frayed and the sole wore down, I found out the company will refurbish them for you...I think that would have been a viable option if I hadn't let them wear out so much.

If you hike in them, be aware that rocks and sticks will get you. On the other hand, Chacos never gave me blisters from extended uphill or downhill hiking like my hiking boots/shoes did. And your feet will be wonderfully tan at the end of your hike, not pink and wrinkly. But on longer hikes the skin on your feet can dry and crack -- not a flaw in the shoe, just a reality of hiking in sandals.

As far as these shoes go, I have zero complaints about quality or function or Chaco customer service. They're excellent value for the price.

not for novices

By:
May 24, 2006

This new version of Chaco sandals just arrived and I'm wearing them now. My first pair of Chacos was way back in '98 after a white water rafting trip in Durango. Total pairs owned are 7-each with a different configuration. My favorites are without a toe loop so I can wear them with socks right until the first snowfall. After wearing them all summer, I can't seem to give them up. Figuring out the straps is the first step towards bonding with your new sandals. I'll admit, these are more difficult to figure out than the single strap models, but from now on will need minor adjustments. I love Chacos, my doctor loves them and recommends them to anyone with plantar faciitis-but please don't call them orthopedic unless you want the tax deduction. And Chaco has excellent customer service should you need new straps or soles. They are worth the time to get the straps right-and they are extremely durable-so far only my very first pair has worn out, the rest I have to color coordinate with different outfits and I always get comments. Can you tell I LOVE CHACOS!?!

blisters

By:
April 24, 2006

The sandals had great support, but I wasn't prepared for the rubs that caused horrible blisters on various places on my feet because of the straps. I felt they were adjusted correctly, but still made blisters. I had to bandage my feet constantly, thus plan to send the sandals back.

These sandals are GREAT!

By:
June 30, 2006

I just got back from two weeks of sightseeing all over Italy and I wish I had just packed one pair of shoes...my new Chaco ZX/1 sandals. I wore them every day, never got a blister, was able to wash them out when they got dusty, and could go from hiking to wading in the water without worrying about changing my shoes. I highly recommend these! I also like how the double narrow straps conform to my feet, they help the sandals fit perfectly.

Glad I did. they are really light(first pair with unaweep. other two have the street sole.) and adjusted super easy (a minus on some reviews I'd read). Still has the New Chaco feel of wearing someone else's' shoes, but that goes away in a week of wear.
yummy as always. love these shoes as a line.

Best sandals I've ever had. They are rugged enough for day hikes and cute enough to wear with a casual dress. It took me quite a while to get the straps adjusted and to get used to the footbed but once I had it right the sandals were awesome and I can wear them all day. I haven't worn my Keens once since getting these. The ZX/1 is cuter and more comfortable. I did order a half size down from my regular size and I'm happy with that.

Almost perfect

By:
June 18, 2009

I've been wearing Chacos for years and absolutely love them. The arch support in the foot-bed is great for my flat feet, and they're comfortable to walk around in all day. The only problem I've had with this pair is that the straps aren't staying adjusted - they loosen somewhat as I walk, and I just keep adjusting them. This is my first pair of Unaweeps without the toe-loop, and I wonder if the one fewer strap means that there's less friction and thus less of a hold.

This is my second pair with double-straps and I've not found them to be much different functionally than the single-strap, but I think they're prettier. Also, I've learned from enough pairs of Chacos (each worn into the ground) that it's better to adjust them to slightly looser than I might first expect - they still hold my feet well - and I have only gotten hot spots (not quite blisters) when I made them too tight.

These are some of the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. I love the arch support! Also, the soles clean themselves to a practically miraculous degree, which is great considering all the mud I walk through daily.

I love them and want another pair or five.

Adjustability is Great

By:
December 15, 2008

I was overall very happy with these sandles... they are comfortable for a full day of walking and the adjustability is fantastic (most shoes are too big for my short/narrow feet). The one downside is that they are heavy. You may want to think twice if you are looking for a lightweight sandle for a backpacking trip.

Wearing Chacos in the Dead Sea

By:
March 27, 2009

I love my Chacos. Great support, durable, comfortable, ... If you wear them to swim in the Dead Sea, plan to soak them in a large bucket of clear clean water before you wear them again. I didn't and the next day as they dried the straps got stiff and cut my feet. Very painful for the rest of my holiday.

finally blister free

By: Backcountry.com Employee
August 13, 2009

I am blister prone...I have never found a pair a boots or sneakers that didn't cause blisters, even with all the duct tape and moleskin in the world. When it came time to pack for a recent backpacking trip, I was a little worried about footwear since there was going to be a good amount of hiking involved. Since we were going somewhere warm (Havasupai) I decided to bring my Chacos. For me, they're the ultimate shoe. I can wear them around town, hiking and in the water. They're easy to rinse off (Havasupai is super sandy) and easy to get on and off. 32 miles later, I still had happy, blister free feet! You may not want to do the same if you have weak ankles or something, but I have to say...I am thrilled. My only complaint about these shoes is that when you're walking in a river with lots of little rocks on the bottom, you will get some in between your foot and the shoe and that can be a pain.

My boyfriend, on the other hand, has very flat feet and the way his feet sit in Chacos causes horrendous blisters. I have pretty high arches, and they fit me perfectly, so I'd definitely try them out for a while before committing to days of hiking in them.

Great sandals but not so great protection

By:
June 24, 2008

Bought these shoes to replace my birkenstock sandals as they cant be worn in the water. I'm planning a trip to India and while the chacos shoes have been great so far (minus getting some blisters while wearing them in and getting the straps to adjust right) I'm not sure they'll do the trick in India. My feet feel really exposed in these! So I'll keep the chaco's but dont think I'll be taking them to India. Looks like I'll still be taking a pair of thongs for taking showers in.
