The Chaco Women's Z/1 Unaweep Sandals are comfy go-anywhere, do-anything sport sandals with a Vibram Unaweep outsole that has a self-cleaning lug pattern which offers steady footing for hiking or wading. Chaco's polyurethane technology offers a lighter and softer footbed so your feet stay comfortable for longer. The Z/1 strap configuration features an open toe design so your toes can move freely and gives you the option to wear socks with these sandals.
Bottom Line: The Chaco Women's Z/1 Unaweep Sandals stay durable and comfy from the trail to the destination.
Perfect product for any water/water terrain endeavor. Great tread for scrambling around on hikes and in slot canyons. High performance for recreational water activities with a great synching system and they are fairly light weight. Easy maneuverability and easy on and off. Comfortable foot bed and cushioned well for day hike activities off the water. Personally love the style, and colors, and these are very comfortable all terrain river sandals. The one drawback is the occasional pebble that can lodge in under foot but it is also very easy to get out. Sturdy, comfortable, reliable, strong, with great function.
I wear these sandals all year round. In the winter you can just add some socks and they are perfect. I have tried pretty much every style of Chaco and these are the best mix of comfort and stability for me. I don't do the toe strap thing.
Most Chaco's are manufactured in China as they have been for a few seaons and in regards to the sizing, from personal experience, I would try a size 09.0.
These are really comfortable for me, supporting and encasing my high-arched feet perfectly. They are much more comfortable (and well-constructed!) than the Tevas that I wore to death all too soon. These are great for travelling - they work for both hiking (great grip from the soles) and cities. I'm usually a 6.5; I ordered size 6 and they fit perfectly. If I had gotten a size up, the straps would have been too long, and the heel would have flopped around a bit. I'd always thought I had wide feet, but I guess overall I have 'low volume' feet (kinda boney).
Welcome to the most comfortable sandal ever made. I wear these shoes to church and hiking. They are such a versatile pair of shoes. If you are looking for a utility, go to shoe, this is it. Get a pair, better yet, buy 3.
i was looking to buy my first pair of chacos, only i have a bunion on my big toe and was wondering if the z/1 would be a better sandal for me than the z/2 because of the toe strap.
I have tevas... I have keens and now I have Chacos. I love that they did not need to be worn in They were adjustable The color was super cute Highly recommend
Getting ready to take mine camping in Jordan with the Bedouins.
I got these Chacos several weeks ago, so I could break them in before my upcoming trip. I was thoroughly impressed by the design, plus they are stylish for a outdoors shoe.
Unfortunately, I had to return them, because the shoe was too narrow in the area between the arch and heel. Normally I do not have problems with shoes being narrow, but when I returned it and got a wide pair, I had no problems.
Also, I chose a different design for the wide pair, due to the lower price I found. The wide pair's design included the toe strap, which gives more stability, but I personally preferred the Z/1 Unaweep to the styles with the toe strap.
Overall, good shoe, just be warned that it may be narrow!
A pair of black Z/1s were my first Chacos. I still love them, and wear them frequently. They're super comfortable; you can't beat the Chaco footbed. These have become my "cooler weather" Chacos, since they're more compatible with socks than the Z/2s.

chaco Z/1s are good, however, i do prefer the Z/2s because the toe loop makes it more secure for moving around. i do like the Z/1s for hanging out in & they are nice on colder days if you want to wear a pair of smartwool socks (can't with the Z/2).
I'm a relative newbie to the Chaco scene; I've been wearing my first-ever pair for the past year and a half. I was hesitant when I first put them on; the very prominent arch tempted me to send them back. I'm SO glad I didn't. After the initial break-in period (a week or so), the sandals get a nice better-than-barefoot feel. The fit is so very customizable--which comes in handy on long backpacking trips when one's feet start to swell. I take an 8.5 or 9 in trail runners, but the Chaco women's 8 works for me. I've learned to keep them nice and loose, and I don't have to worry about chafing or blisters.
I wore these nearly every day for four weeks this summer while walking el Camino de la Costa across northern Spain. That's 20 to 30 km a day through mud and mountains and city streets, in July heat. They held up well and gave me a killer sandal tan (far superior to a sock tan). The straps dry fast and there is no velcro to wear out or get gunked-up. The Vibram outsole grips like a dream.
My only wish, being a bit of a flat-footed supinator, is that Chaco would come out with a lower-arch version of these. I know I'm a minority here; most people lap up the arch support. Plus, after months of regular wear, I've flattened out the footbed so that it isn't so much of an issue. They still get 5 stars, because there is no finer footwear on the planet. Too bad they don't let me wear open-toed footwear at work.
Like all Chaco sandals the Z/1s are durable, well designed for comfort and support, and look neat and trim on your feet because of the flat webbing - which also won't get caught on passing snags as you walk, like the bulkier, leather-on-webbing sandals. The only thing I can gripe about is that the buckle digs in a little when sitting with my feet underneath me (which I'm getting too old to do anymore, anyway!!). I buy size 7 in Chaco sandals, though I normally wear 7.5 or 8. Highly recommended; get several pairs!!
I seem to remember that my first pair of Chacos were narrow, and the soles were Vibram, and had a molded footbed. Do you still make a Z-1 type with a molded footbed in narrow?
these sandals are the best. so comfortable and very durable. the traction is great and very easy to tighten/loosen for the perfect fit. i think they run slightly big i usually wear a 8.5 in sandals and got a 8 and they fit perfect! i have hiked (and even ran)in them a few times and they were awesome! haven't taken them off since!
After friends raved about their Chacos, I decided it was time to give 'em a try. Now I see why! I have not so great knees, and they have really helped with good support. Also, don't be alarmed if they give you blisters at first, or don't seem as amazing as expected. They will come around in a week or two. They seem like they'll last for a super-long time. Yay for Chacos!!! : ) p.s. they look good, too.
I wanted a pair of non-slip, comfortable sandals that were fairly rugged for hiking/walking on wet surfaces.... but I didn't want the toe strap thing.... I ordered these, hoping they wouldn't be floppy or loose. They're WONDERFUL!! I wore them on a trip to Costa Rica - pretty much for the entire time (except when we were DIRECTED to wear closed toe, high boots because of certain little poisonous critters slithering around....) They get tight by the end of the day, but I can easily adjust the straps and wiggle around and they're fine! I also LOVE (and did not expect) the feature of never really having to re-buckle them-- you just loosen the straps, slide in, tighten 'em up and take off!!!
I wore these sandals almost exclusively on my recent trip to Europe. Due to foot problems, I have tried many expensive brands (including Mephisto) and have never before had a shoe as comfortable as these are. Neither my feet or legs got tired in spite of a great deal of walking. I wore them with black socks on the plane to keep my feet warm. I highly recommend them.
I thought that the new design of these Chacos would provide the comfort and reliability that the original Chaco Sandals provided. After receiving these shoes, Womens Size 8, I felt that they were flimsy and were nothing like the original Chacos that I have owned for 5 years. I promptly returned the Chacos and they handled my return in a professional manner.
I wasn't sure about buying them online without trying them on first but read about the return policy. So, I got the Z/1's to wear while bopping around town or out for a walk. They have good arch support and are easy to take on and off with the slide strap. Super easy to adjust! I love my Chacos! Even though it's still fall and the MN weather is getting cool, I still find myself choosing my Chacos over other shoes.
These are the most supportive shoes i've ever worn -- I have high arches and usually have to wear arch support inserts in my shoes (or just suffer.) Not these! However, it has taken a while to get used to the rough surface of the inner-sole --- I found them to be a little harsh on the bottoms of my feet. it wasn't until I developed a little callusing that I was able to really enjoy the sandals.
I used to own a pair of Nike ACG rafting sandals which somehow ended up missing last summer. I was majorly upset about that. I tried and tried to find something similar that I liked but ended up at a dead end until I found the Chaco's. I didn't order them right away being a poor college student. Luckily, backcountry had them on sale not too long ago and made the purchase that made my feet smile. I put them on to try them on and didn't take them off until 11pm that night. LOVE THEM...and thanks for the great price. Way better than the old Nikes anyday and made here in the USA!
Recommended by a friend, these sandals are out of the box comfortable; easy strap adjustment; great for walking and look okay with casual wear, even skirts. I even wore them to the office a few times! Plan to take them to S.A. on holiday.
I recently received a new pair of Chaco Colorado sandals for my birthday. My family thought it was a great gift for me, since I have worn my previous pair for about 7 years several times a week from spring until fall. They are very comfortable and the best part is when you are walking around in the rain they won't slip around on your feet!! I love gardening, they are perfect for that, too. My old pair will still be used, they have plenty of wear left. For me, these shoes have been a joyful part of my life. I have a lot of foot problems and they have helped me hike in Canada, shop in Mexico, canoe in Kentucky, walk on the beaches in Florida, and take my grandsons on many adventures.
I won't repeat the raves about these shoes, they are very nice and can be re-webbed and resoled, which make them so eco-friendly, and are not made in sweat-shops- yay! As far as sizing, I disagree with the person who said order a 1/2 size down as opposed to up, because mine are a tad snugI followed their advice. I do have super-wide feet, and ordered a wide, but will order a 1/2 size up next time.
My husband's been wearing Chacos for a few years now and loves them. He's one of those types that wears sandals everywhere...to church, to mow the grass, skiing (well they made him put on boots but before and after he had Chaco's and Teko Merino wool socks in the 15F weather!). He recently bought me a pair of Z/1s, they were my first pair of Chacos. We haven't done any major backpacking yet, but we hiked a fairly technical trail in Florida a few weeks ago while wearing Chacos and they were awesome. Incredibly durable and comfortable. I see why he's hooked.
I have the Z/1s with Colorado sole, he just upgraded to Z2's with the new Unaweep sole. He claims it's the best sole he's had on any pair of Chaco's, but the Colorado has been fine for me.
At first when I ordered these shoes, I didn't understand them. I got a size 8, the length fit great but the straps were too small. SO, then I ordered a 9 and those were too long and the straps were HUGE! So, I decided to order an 8 again just to see if the ones I got were like messed up. I finally figured out that the straps can adjust! You just pull them! SO besides the miscommunication, I love these shoes and recommend them for everyone! I have worn mine to class, on hiking trips, to work, and anywhere else! I love them!!!
These are pretty good, though they definitely need to be worn in since they created blisters initially. They're very sturdy and great if you intend on doing a lot of working.
I bought these to use camping, canoeing, hiking, and I use them all the time for everything. They are very comfortable and easy to adjust. I have a high arch and wide toe base. I am between a 7 and 7½ and the 7 fits great. I also have a pair of the Colorado Dipthong, which I also love from Chaco.
I have been very happy with these shoes. The reviews I'd seen were right - the arch is high and it takes a few wears until you no longer notice you're wearing them, but after that they are perfect. The whole strap system is adjustable so you can tailor the fit, and the instructions are helpful. I got the purple moon color, which is pretty. I have received several compliments on them. Overall, I recommend the Unaweep Z/1 highly.
I love these Chaco sandals. Having flat feet & some arthritis, these sandals gave me the support I needed for long walking & hiking. They also gave support to my high instep. I plan to purchase another pair next year. Thank you.
These sandals are great, sturdy & keeps my feet cool in the hot weather here in Arizona. I personally prefer these to the sandals with the toe loop. Although I have fairly small/narrow feet I needed a size 6 wide, otherwise my heels felt pinched. Thank you, backcountry.com, for your great service, I will definitely continue shopping here.
These sandals definitely serve their purpose: a clean cut, water loving sandal that is very versatile. They do have a thick heel and take a little longer to break in than preferred, but they do eventually, but it's easy to adjust and looks good whether your crossing rivers or eating paella...
First pair of Chaco sandles and I love them. I'm very happy I can wear them with or without socks. Great company to buy them from, too: yeah Back Country.
These sandals are most comfortable on my feet with rather high arches. They give a bit of support and feel good. The sandals are a replacement for a pair I purchased many years ago. Service was efficient (quick) with no problems.
These are really comfortable and supportive of your feet. I usually have to wear orthotics in my shoes and these are the first pair of sandals I can wear without orthotics. The straps are not annoying or itchy at all and the sandals will feel amazing on your feet -- I worked as a camp counselor and had ten-hour days in the water, hiking, and climbing. These sandals never hurt once!
I bought these for my very choosey daughter as a birthday gift. She loves them! She wears them anytime the temperature rises above 40 degrees here in Idaho. I guess the real test will be this summer's hiking in the mountains with her dog and friends.
I loved my first pair of Chaco Z/1s so much that, for fashion sake alone, I bought a second pair in black. Now, I am guaranteed comfy feet and color coordination in any situation. My first pair took me to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon pre-foot surgery. I could not have made it without them. Although, I did buy women's wide size for true comfort. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a versatile, supportive do anything sandal.
What a perfect summer shoe! I took a 1yr old and 2yr old to the Smokey Mnts. and we went from water to land never once slipping even while holding baby in the streams or on the trails. Plus my legs still felt good at the end of the day thanks to great arch support. It is the only shoe I wear now.
Having completely worn out every part of my old Z/2 Chacos, bought years ago, I am pleased to say my new Z/1 Unaweeps are equally good for my feet. With a painful Morton's Neuroma I can't walk or hike comfortably in anything except Chacos.
You really can't go wrong with the Chaco Z series of sandals. The Z/1 is where it all started, and my personal preference is for this single strap design without the loop around your toe so you can wear them with socks. I also sized up so I could wear thick wool socks after a day of backpacking. Other than that, I'd say these run true to size, and are good for average to narrow width feet. Except for the heel strap, all of the straps can be adjusted for a customized fit, and there's a handy diagram inside the lid of the box so you know what order to pull them in. The Vibram soles will last a long time, and you can even send these back to Chaco to get resoled and have other repairs. These are some of the most supportive sandals out there, and they are well worth the money. You'll have them and love them for years!
I look forward every year to the day when it is warm enough for me to wear my chacos. you can wear these forever because they are supportive and they have great traction. i love to have them with me after climbing and even haul them up multi pitch climbs with me when i know it's goign to be a long downclimb and I don't want to trash my climbing shoes.
Got these in 2003 and aside from one small snag on the back heel loop, you would never guess it. I brought them backpacking with me and although they add a little weight, they were awesome to have once in camp to lounge around and walk through rivers in.
I can't get over how sturdy, comfy and fashionable these sandals are. I wouldn't change a thing about them, and the wonderful thing is that I use them not only as my outdoorsy active wear sandals, but also as my dressy city sandals as well! Form and function all in one! By the way, if you are a half size, order the next smaller. For instance, I am normally 7 1/2 and 7 fit perfectly but 8 was way too big.
Bought them for a trip to Fiji. They're comfortable, they fit well. But I wouldn't wear them in sand ever again. Trying to do a hike on beach, wading, then heading up on rocks wasn't worth it with the amount of sand in the sandal. I think I would have rather worn my Chacos flip-flops.
Didn't find them stylish enough compared to others for the price tag. I guess they are more for the outdoor tough it girls, not for the women who like things good looking...
