I'd go for the medium, I think the large would be too baggy on him. It shouldn't shrink too much because of the poly. You can always return it too...backcountry is great about that kind of thing!

You'll never buy another hoody again if you purchase this! I have 2 of these and they are very warm and don't shrink in the wash. Great quality and the fit seems true as well.
