Fill the three-liter water reservoir in the CamelBak Women’s Helena Hydration Pack, stash a fleece, rain jacket, and snacks in the roomy main compartment, and hit the trail for an all-day adventure. CamelBak gave this pack a high sternum strap, a harness that contours to a gal's body, and a short torso length (in comparison to unisex packs) so your load feels comfortable. When you need a drink, bite down on the leak-proof bite valve and stay hydrated without missing a step.
Bottom Line: Cargo space and water-carrying capacity for a day-long hike.
I'm seriously considering this pack. Its listed as having a waist strap. Does this waist strap lend any support. I carry some camera gear with me and really need something that helps take the pressure off my shoulders. Like anyone else I hate feeling bogged down!
The waist strap on this model is for stabilization only--not load transfer. If you are looking for something to take the weight off your shoulders and transfer it to your hips (a far more efficient setup), then you will need to get something with an internal frame. For a super lightweight internal framepack, I would recommend the Deuter Futura Zero 30. It's a 30 liter pack (compared to this pack's 21.3 liters) and weighs very little. It offers extremely versatile gear carrying options and would like make hauling your photography gear a blessing, not a curse.
I have the 2007 version but its pretty much the same. I took this bag as my day pack on a month backpacking trip through the Philippines in May. It was super hot there and I hiked the rice terraces, into and out of a volcano cone and through torrential rain and this pack was perfect for the whole trip. Although it is not water proof it still kept my stuff mostly dry. The very large water reservoir was perfect for all that I needed plus place for two large water bottles. The straps are extremely comfy too. The back got pretty sweaty but I think that is because I was 8 degrees off of the equator. Now i use the bag for school and it works for that perfectly too. Great backpack!
Would this be big enough to use for a school backpack? It would need to be able to hold a binder/textbook or two as well as assorted other small necessities.
I tried to put a small binder in my pack and it did fit, but it's tight. This pack is made shorter and more narrow to contour to a women's body. It's a great pack for day hiking, but I wouldn't recommend it for carrying binders and large books.
I like this pack. I've used it to carry lunch, rain coats, and a few other things on some day hikes. The main reason I bought the pack was for the large resevoir, which is great. My one complaint is that the strap the goes over the chest is too high up and sometimes feels like it is choking me on my neck. The chest strap is not adjustable up or down the pack. Other than that problem, which I can live with, I like the pack
I LOVE this pack. My boyfriend got it for me for my birthday this year, and the same weekend I took it on two hikes. The reservoir holds 3L, which was perfect for a pretty challenging 10 mile 2500 foot hike, the bite valve worked great, it was easy to fill, and there were no leaks. The pack itself is designed so well - the back gets good ventilation, the straps are in the right place, and all the pockets are really well-placed. There's a pocket with a soft lining for your sunglasses in the very top, a large main pocket (the second day had variable weather, and at one point I had a Precip jacket, a light fleece, and a light long sleeve shirt all stuffed in there comfortably), a well-organized outer pocket, and then a great outside compartment with mesh. Oh, and two side pockets for water bottles, etc. And this is all in a pretty compact, attractive pack. I couldn't be happier.
Anyone use this pack for trail running? I don't want something that bounces a lot; I'm currently using a Nathan pack, but would like a pack that holds a larger bladder.
If you cinch the straps up you can quiet it down, but like most packs, it has quite a bit of lateral movement. Better than most though, my girlfriend uses this for cross country biking, and she says she hardly notices it.
This is quite possibly the best bag i've ever bought! It fits so much stuff in it! An example is when i go cycling, I'm able to fit somewhere close to 5 water bottles in the main part of the bag, 2 on the sides, and still have room for flip flops, a change of clothes, sunglasses, phone, keys, and other little things. When i went camping the same thing and while its nto water proof it did keep everything inside the bag relatively dry despite the rain! Best bag ever!
