So you want a BPA-free water bottle, but are not stoked on the way aluminum bottles dent easily and have pesky twist-on caps? Try the CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Bite Valve. CamelBak made this 0.75-liter bottle out of BPA-free copolyester polymer material. Flip up the bite valve when you want to take a sip. The bite valve also self-seals, so no water will leak out even if the Better Bottle tips over with the valve bite valve open.
Bottom Line: Drinking out of a BPA-free bottle doesn't have to be inconvenient.
Who knew adding a flip up straw would make all the difference in the world. No more spills in the car or your pack. Easy to grab off your bike. This is my favorite water bottle I own.
Got one of these for the 3 most important folks in my life...and myself. Love it. Love the straw and will always love the CamelBak bite valve. Plus if you're on a rough road you can still drink; ya don't have to worry about spilling water all over yourself - finally!
Just got a bottle with the bite valve and I can't seem to get it to work. Is the bite valve supposed to have a slit in it that opens when you bite it? There's no slit in mine and I just can't suck hard enough to get anything out.
When you apply pressure to the value, like squeezing or biting, it should open up. If not, send it back to backcountry.com if you got it here, for a replacement, or call up CamelBak and see what the deal is. Alternatively you could make your own slit, but I would not recommend that option.
I went with CamelBak over some other brands for a few reasons. 1: The bite valve is great. It's a lot more convenient for drinking on the go than sipping like a cup. 2: The bottle is totally and completely leak-free in every setting I've had it. No problems in the cold, heat, or at elevation. I haven't tried it far below sea level yet, but I don't expect any problems there. 3: I've had bottles from other companies before that attach their lids in a flimsy fashion to the bottle. Employing things such as thin plastic connectors. The lid on this bottle is better because it screws on and off. No plastic pieces that allow the lid to dangle.
For casual water bottle needs and the day to day, this bottle does the trick. For expeditions, especially with cold weather, I would go for just a standard cap because if you've taken Camelbak nozzles into the snow, you know that they are problematic with freezing. The same goes for this bottle.
Unfortunately the tab that helps flip the spout open broke off so it's harder to open the spout, but it still works. It leaves no taste in the water. It's BPA-free if that's important to you, though I'm not sure I buy into the whole BPA-free craze because I'm not sure what they're replacing the BPA with and whether that's really any better. I'm sure we'll find out in a couple years.
To be honest, I'm not a fan of the 0.75L size (it was a gift). If I were to buy my own I'd get the 1L. Not much bigger and the extra volume is worth it.
It is a joy to drink out of. It's basically an adult sippy cup, and for those of us that would drink out of actual sippy cups if it were socially acceptable, it's perfect. No spills, even when driving or walking.
How to clean the bite valve? ..On the inside of the bit valve appears to have something black inside. Mold? Or is it the washer Not sure. How to clean. I don't want to purchase another bottle, since I have only had this one 3 months!
Pull the mouthpiece off (it comes off and goes back on easily) and use a toothbrush, maybe bleach if it's serious. If you put drinks other than water, especially sugary drinks, it can grow mold pretty quickly (this is true for all Camelbak products and most water bottles in general).
I have had this bottle for several months now. I love how it only requires a quick flip of the thumb to rehydrate. The profile is perfect for most cup holders and most backpack bottle-pouches. The bite-valve makes this bottle spill resistant which saves the problem of accidental spills. I highly recommend this bottle to others but caution that the cap is difficult to clean without a pipe brush. I also would not suggest putting the cap assembly in the dishwasher since the pressure valve may lose its ability to prevent leakage.
I like camelback bags but Im not sure so much on the bottles. They are very well constructed. To me I dont like the mouth piece exposed and you have to put your hands all over the bite valve to pull it up and drink. So if you are working with messy conditions that means making it quite dirty to drink out of. I prefer the nalgene where you screw off the top but this bottle is a good one too
There is a little finger tab so you don't need to touch the bite valve in order to flip it open. CamelBak also makes bottle with a traditional screw top similar to Nalgene, see classic cap.

I love this bottle. I received one as a gift while I was pregnant and was I ever glad to have it. It kept me hydrated throughout the long and difficult birth of my son. It was so easy to have water always at hand without worry of spilling. Being able to sneak in a few sips between contractions was made so easy. Without it I wonder if I would have been able to keep my self as hydrated as I needed to be. I also discovered afterwards that it was also extremely handy while feeding the baby. I highly recommend this product for its great quality as well as for any expecting or new mom.

I have to say the bit valve was a huge step forward from the huge void of other sport bottles. With the straw reaching all the way down, I no longer have to tip the bottle up and fight gravity over exactly how much water is going to come out. My only turn off is that the functionality of the leak proof top hinges on the bit valve staying locked down, but once the bottle has exposed to extreme heat that very bite valve no longer locks in place, voiding any reassurance of a leak proof cap... So no mater how dirty... Never boil you bottle!
I'm a lifeguard and a runner, so staying hydrated is very important. I take this bottle everywhere I go and am by no means reckless, but not exactly careful either. With my nalgene I usually get a splash on my face and down my shirt, this bottle solves that problem. The only drawback is the hard plastic lever that is used to pull the nozzle up, they are prone to break if they are dropped. When I loose this one I would definitely buy another.
Ive had this bottle for a while now and I use it almost every day. Love camelbak and their products. The bite vale on this bottle is genius. I havent had any leak problems with this thing. I can throw it around and I still havent seen it leak. Maybe the others have a defective bottle, I dont know. Its great to be able to drink out of this bottle without having to tip the bottle up in the air. Simple just bite down on the bite valve and drink. The straw reaches all the way to the bottom so you have no problem getting every drop of water. The bottle is BPA free so thats a plus. The rubber bite valve and bottle dont leave any taste to your water. The same cant be said for the straw that is included. If any water is hanging around inside the straw it may leave a little plastic taste, but as soon as you take that small sip the taste will go away. This only happens if you leave water in there for a long time. There is a small loop at the top of the bottle which is great if you need to clip the bottle to your pack when your on a hike. Overall Im very happy with this purchase. Great buy in my opinion.
This is a great bottle for everyday use around the house, gym, or at work. The downside it that it has parts, and parts break. I would not advocate this as a backcountry bottle, instead go with a traditional bottle with screw cap. I did break the cap on my first bottle and it was easier to just buy a new bottle...again not a backcountry type bottle.
Backcountry has a department who could help you out with this, call 800-409-4502 and ask to be connected with group sales, they will most likely be able to help you.
I love, Love, LOVE these bottles!!! I am so glad I found them. I was refilling my crappy plastic water bottles, but wasn't feeling very good about that either, so I bought several of these CamelBak bottles. . . .2 for the car, 1 for the nightstand, 1 for my office, etc. Great idea, great selection. . .the purple matches my company logo. . .how cool is that??!!! :) Yay!
My mother-in-law had several of these and loves them so I decided to buy them for my kids for school. Well I liked them so well that I bought the bigger ones for my husband and I. They are great!! We have 8 big ones and 6 small ones. They really do make you want to drink more water!!
You may be better off just buying a new bottle. Here's one place that sells replacement caps for $8.50: http://www.heartratemonitorsusa.com/Pages/CAMELBAK/access-bottles.shtml
I love this water bottle. I had no problem with it at high elevations. It never leaked, even when I was constantly changing elevation. I do get told I use a sippy cup at work, but it is better than using the nalgene. I highly recommend this to anyone. My 18 month old niece loves hers.
I love this bottle. It's a good size (750 ml), easy to open, is leak-proof, has a nice handle to carry on your finger, and is BPA-Free. I carry mine with me everywhere to stay hydrated and keep my dozen or so plastic bottles per week out of the landfills. Plus, it looks cool! Highly recommended!
I've got multiple Nalgene-like bottles, and this is probably my favorite. The bite valve is key, both because it reaches the bottom, unlike most straws, and it is leak proof (For the most part). Something about this that separates it from alot of other bottles of this type is the size. It is small enough in diameter to fit in regular sized bottle holders or bike bottle cages, while alot of others are simply too large. To end, this bottle should always, always be on hand.
I was initially concerned that after some use, the bite valve would losen up and perhaps leak a little. No worries, after much use it's still water tight! Highly recommend.
No leaking, easy to clean and very tough. I really like the cap design. I have only used it for cold liquids. The bite valve is good, but the flow rate is low. Maybe this helps conserve water....?
This bottle is great for awkward people like me. With wide-mouthed bottles, I always have to stop to take a drink. Now I can drink while falling down a mountain. I use mine almost every day, and have never had any problems with leaking or spilling. The bite valve snaps down, so dropping it wont accidently squeeze it open, too.
I bought this bottle, or one just like it, a year ago and was wondering if that bottle is BPA-free? Anyone know? Is there some marking on the bottle? I love this bottle and hate to part with it and will buy a newer one if my old one isnt BPA-free.
I bought this water bottle to replace one that I had to screw the lid off of every time I wanted a sip of water. This bottle is much more convenient. It fits in the cup holder in my car, and it doesn't leak. I bought the "Ice" color, which is more of a pearlescent baby blue than white (it's hard to tell from the picture). I've been drinking a lot more water since I got this bottle.
Love my Camelback bottle with a bite valve. I bought 6 of them for a trip to Colorado. We are from Texas and the high altitude usually gets one of us, so in order to make sure the kids are drinking enough these bottles do the trick! I am also a full time Geology student, so I hook it to my bag and head to class. No spills, don't have to tilt it back to get a drink, just bite down.
Bottle seemed like a great idea and a great size for all around use. Took it on a long road trip this weekend up to the mountains in north georgia (only ~4000ft). Once we got up in elevation the bottle started leaking all over the place. Made a complete sticky mess(fruit punch). Liquid seemed to be continuously coming out of the bottle, had to drink more then half of it to get it to stop. Appears to have some sort of pressure valve in the top....however it must not work at all! Tried testing the pressure valve by blowing into the bite valve to see if I could get the pressure valve to release and it just pressurized my bottle allowing the water in the bottle to be forced out the bite valve. Seems to be a leak free in an office setting... but would not recommend this bottle for travel at all.
I love the bite valve on this bottle - like drinking out of a straw. Doesn't leek and is the perfect size. Perfect for workout and running around all day. Also, all parts are top rack dishwasher safe. The only problem, my boys liked my bottle so much, I had to go buy a pink one in order to have one to myself!!!
Great bottle, I drink more out of this bottle than anything I have ever owned. I also used this bottle during pregnancy and it was great. I could keep track of how much I was drinking and it motivated me to drink more when I slacked a little. Highly recommended!!! Never spills even when you drop it.
This has got to be the most fabulous water bottle. I drink water constantly throughout the day. This bottle goes with me everywhere. The bite valve is great. No leaks when it is tipped over. I would not be without one. It's BPA free.
This is a great bottle for use wherever a water bottle is needed. It's convenient and has a large enough capacity for pretty much anything. I like this better than the hydration packs because they are so hard to clean and it is cheaper.
This bottle goes everywhere with me, love the wide mouth for adding ice to beverage (usually water), seems to be leak-free. I've used CamelBak bladders in my cycling pack for years and am used to using the bite valve. I find the products to be of very good quality. Only thing is, having the bite valve on this bottel can get a little tiresome, where sometimes it would be nice not to have to use my teeth to get a drink. On the other hand, this helps keep what's in the bottle in it, and keeps dust, bugs, etc... out. A small drawback to all of the positive qualities! I also love the color choices (I got the ice blue, feels cooling to just look at it)!
I think this is just an awesome bottle! I use it in bed so I can stay hydrated without spilling water on myself at night, at work so I don't have to buy bottled water all the time and at the gym so I have water at the tip of my finger all day long!
You can drink hotter beverages out of this material (it is entirely dishwasher safe), but it also doesn't have an insulated body which means your tea will become iced in little or no time.Camelbak does make a neoprene sleeve to help keep things all warm and toasty, but Backcountry doesn't stock it. Your local Camelbak dealer might be able to help out, or you might already have a similar product laying around to become best friends with your Better Bottle.
Its fits perfectly in my backpack water holder. It has never leaked. I bought the ice one and its more like a shiny light blue, I really like it! Its the right amount of water for throughout the day!
This is the best sports bottle I've used. It doesn't leak (I have to shake it pretty hard to force it to leak) and the straw is great. The bite valve took a little getting used to, but it's been fine for me.
I love my bottle!! I use it all the time. Since it is so easy to drink out of and never spills I drink a lot more water now. I can use it while running because I don't have to worry about stopping to prevent water from splashing up in my face. I was worried that the bite valve would leak or that it may smell weird like other water bottles I have had but neither was the case. I'm very pleased. :-)
i just ordered this bottle, because i left my other one at a restaurant. this past week without my camelbak has been awful, and i feel bad using regular plastic water bottles. definitely better than the naglene and sigg-like water bottles i have had in this past. i'm tempted to get the 1 L for my working out/cheer practice and using my .75 L for everyday use.
I had purchased a true Camelback for my son to use this summer in the Arizona heat. However, I had purchased this bottle for myself.
It is very well made and solid and holds a decent amount of fluid.
I found the bite valve to be awkward in the setting that I used it, but my 12 year old was thrilled to have it. All the kids at school have this type of bottle, and he thinks the bite valve is cool.
Personally, as an ER nurse, I need to be able to chug a large amount in a small time frame, so I am going to look further for a wide mouth option.
I know, you're thinking, "just get a different lid!"
Yep, that's what I'm thinking, too. But now, I have to choose a different color than my kids! ;-)
No, but you can put very hot things in it and if you wrap one of your spare layers around it, it'll stay hot for a long time. i believe that if you start with boiling water in an uninsulated nalgene, it takes 5 hours before it freezes.

I've fought fire for around 4 years now (last season was my last though), and always used Nalgene Bottles. However, last year when buying some gear for a backpack trip, I got one of these babies and have never looked back. The bite valve is amazing for on the go drinking, without having to fiddle around and unscrew something. And they are indestrucatble. I've dropped it from pretty high, onto rock and it survived just fine. I now use it at work, home, fishing and backpacking and could not be happier. It also looks pretty sweet too and get tons of compliments on it :)
Included with a 7" straw, the better bottle has plenty of flow but absolutely no spilling. I went ahead and bought my second one shortly after purchasing my first. Fits in my car's cupholder, any backpack's side pocket, and even in the diaper bag when I'm out with my toddler- she can even use this bottle no problem. The bite valve removes easily for cleaning ( I had nuun powder build up in there but it came out very easily). Gin & juice goes inside when I'm golfing with Snoop Dogg.
I have been using CamelBak packs since they first hit the market. I can't live on the trail without one, now I can use on at my desk. As far as leaks, I have been trying to get mine to leak and I can't. Water will come out if the bite valve is squeezed, BUT you can flip it back into the locked position and it won't come out. They do know what they are doing.
This bottle works well when I go to the gym, good size, not too huge or wide, etc...but when I put it in my Timbuk2 bag, the top of the bag got wet because it was pressing down on the bite valve. Makes sense on why it would do that, but it is annoying and not exactly leak proof.
One other comment about the bite valve--it is firm enough that it is difficult, if not impossible, to open using only your lips. Teeth are needed. But if you have an ice-cold beverage in the container, and have even slightly sensitive teeth, this brings your teeth into far too close of proximity to the cold liquid. A more basic straw doesn't have this issue, as the teeth can be retracted and only the lips are needed. Yet another reason I'll be drilling out my bite valve and using it as a simple straw.
Seems to be the best bottle out there with a straw. However, the bite valve seems to require more work than it should for the amount of liquid you're able to suck out. Seeing that in my work environment application, straw-top leakage is not a major concern, I'm likely to drill out the bite valve to make it act more like an extension of the straw.
For reviewer Larry Krame--the valve on top is an air INLET, to allow air to enter as you drink the liquid, and thus not force you to suck against a vaccuum. It doesn't let air--or liquid--out. This means that once air gets into the bottle, the only ways to get it out are to either unscrew the top, or to drink all the liquid until air can escape through the straw. But--air volume changes significantly with temperature. So if the air in the bottle expands (be it because the ambient temperature rises, or because of exposure to a warmer-than-ambient liquid, or simply the kinetic energy of carrying it somewhere), the bottle contents are under slight pressure--enough to push liquid up through the bite valve in some cases if the valve is flipped up. If you want to avoid this, keep the bite valve flipped down when not in use. If you want a drink and you suspect pressure has built up inside the bottle, the easiest thing to do is before you flip up the bite valve, slightly twist open the top until the pressure normalizes. Then put the lid back on, and flip up the bite valve.
What can I say, for $13 this bottle should have been done a whole lot better, it leaks upside-down, laying on it's side and so on. If you willing to pay this money just to have Camelbak and look cool, go ahead, but don't ges pissed, when your car seat will be wet just because you left this bittle there for a couple hours. They definetely have to work on that valve.
