CRKT M16-14 Titanium Knife - 2008

CRKT’s AutoLAWKS mechanism practically turns the M16-14 Titanium Knife into a fixed blade each time you flick it open. This means you get the benefits of a full-size working knife in to-go form, with an almost-indestructible, open 6AL4V titanium frame. Teflon bearings at the blade pivot make for easy one-hand opening, and the AutoLAWKS uses a metal bar to prevent accidental releasing while you cut. Ambidextrous thumb studs make for quick, easy access in emergencies.

Bottom Line: AKA the Big Dog.

The Big Dog

This is a serious knife. The titanium handle is comfortable and sturdy, and the holes in the handle can really help get a firm grip. It is easy to quickly open (using your index finger on the "Carson Flipper," which is much easier than using the thumb studs). The blade is very beefy, and just a bit under 4 inches. The AutoLawks certainly prevents accidental closure. This not a knife for people who just like to use their knives to clean under their nails. This is a monster of a knife made to be used and abused.

Does anyone know if this model only comes with a chisel grind?

Does anyone know if this model only comes with a chisel grind? Got one from SAC (for a great price!) not too long ago and the cutting edge is a chisel grind. Emailed CRKT to see if that's the standard for this model or if there are options for other grinds (hollow, flat, etc) but haven't heard back yet. Knife overall is pretty sick and solid, just think I would prefer a grind other than chisel for more precise cutting, etc. Then again haven't used it all that much yet. Any thoughts appreciated!

This is a BEAST

Seriously. This knife is basically the biggest thing you can legally carry. It makes my SOG Twitch XL look like a freakin' toothpick. If you want an inconspicuous blade, find something else. If you're looking for a big dog, this is your ticket.

Otherwise, it is great. Very solid construction, but made in Taiwan... Balance point is just behind the hilt. Opens FAST with a satisfyingly audible metallic snap and closes very easily with one hand. Does NOT lock shut, but this is my 3rd M16 and I've never had one open in my pocket. Good hard steel holds an edge nicely. Can be fully disassembled for cleaning (or to disable autolawks if you wish) in a matter of minutes w/ torx wrenches. It's titanium, so it is quite light for its size, but don't fool yourself into thinking this sucker is "light." You've still got a ~ 4" hardened steel blade that is over 1/8th of an inch thick. CRKT says it weighs 5.7 oz, and it feels pretty solid.
