Cloudveil Serendipity Jacket - Men's - 2006

The Serendipity Jacket is Cloudveil's flagship piece in their soft shell line. These days it seems everybody's jumping on the soft shell bandwagon because of their superior fit and breathability, but unbeknownst to most is that Cloudveil pioneered this movement. The Serendipity is made from Schoeller Dryskin Extreme fabric, a blend of materials including lycra, that has a stretchy quality to it for unparalleled freedom of movement. It's also extremely breathable. These qualities make the Serendipity PERFECT for winter sports where you're moving athletically and breaking a sweat. Other distinguishing features include a pack friendly streamlined waist, low bulk storm cuffs that are just plain slick, and two (yes, two!) ever handy Napoleon pockets.

Bottom Line: If you're going to go with a soft shell, go with one made BY winter enthusiasts FOR winter enthusiasts.

Best lightweight backcountry jacket on earth

By:
March 6, 2007

If you do anything in the backcountry, or anywhere in the universe for that matter, this is the jacket.
Good for a wide range of temps using various double layering strategies. Blocks wind, extremely comfortable even by itself. Top quality. Simple construction. The Schoeller extreme fabric is incredible.
If you've never tried it you owe it to yourself to do so. You send all your old fleece jackets to goodwill. Simply no comparison.

Ridiculously thin, but surprisingly comfortable by itself down into the '40's, layered to much lower. Well below freezing. Add a gore tex shell on top or a down jacket, and it does it all. Perfect fit. Comfortable by itself into the '60's as well.

Incredible breathability from inside to out, but blocks 95% of the wind. Easily worth the price of admission condering all it does, and all the garments it replaces.

You still need a warm jacket to wear alone out in town, etc. when the temps drop and you don't feel like layering. But anyother time the serendipity does it in comfort and style.

Does it All!!

By:
September 5, 2006

I'm a 50 year young alpine/backcountry skier who has had his share of technical jackets over the years. We get a lot of diverse weather in New England, and unless the temp drops down in the single digits I use this softshell for everything. Very stretchy, breathable and can even handle wind quite well. Having an insulated softshell like the zero G or the spacewalk is great for very cold conditions but for everything else I reach for the serendipity. Unbeatable!! L.R.

The best jacket I own.

By:
April 26, 2004

I wear this telemarking among other things and it's the first jacket I've owned where I'm dry and warm all day. From 10 (with layers) to 40+ degrees F it's comfortable. You just put it on and go. It blocks enough wind to keep you warm and lets enough through to dry you off and keep from overheating. Construction is great, nice features ( neck cinch for warmth, easy access napoleon pockets). Check out the symmetry pants too.

Great purchase. The Gearheads recommended this one, and it's perfect. Warm, light, great layered or by itself. Perfect soft shell.

Serendipity Jacket is GREAT!

By:
September 23, 2004

Great jacket...I only know because I bought this jacket based on my older brother's experience with the same jacket. Much more breathable than
most conventional softshells and the neck gator is really handy when the wind and snow pick up. I already own the Gamma MX and the Alpha Comp jacket from Arc'teryx...This jacket has less insulation than the Gamma MX and is more breathable than the Alpha Comp which is
exactly what I wanted for winter backcountry tele trips! The Gamma MX is great for resort riding and the Alpha Comp is great for Spring backcountry trips but not for winter. Overall, a solid design from a solid company who invented the softshell! You cannot beat the price either!

oversized fit

By:
March 21, 2005

I am a 42 regular – 6ft even and 180lb with fairly broad shoulders. I bought the large because I always have worn a large, but the large was too big. Too long in the sleeves and way too much bulk in the body. I exchanged it for a medium and it fits great. Still enough room if I want a fleece on under it, but it has a nice slim fitted fit. Plenty of length in the sleeves, and this is usually a problem for me, even with large. Great jacket!!!
