MSR OutfitterWing Shelter - 2007

MSR OutfitterWing is exceptionally strong 3 season tarp. With 200 sq. feet of protection from sun and rain, it is MSR's largest tarp. Part of the “Wing Series” of tarps, The OutfitterWing can either stand alone or be attached to another tent. Wing tarps transcend traditional tarps by offering flexible setup, using fewer poles, and reducing fabric bulk. They also use tensioned fabric that keeps the surface taut as wind flows over the curves, causing rain to simply spill off.

Bottom Line: The MSR OutfitterWing sleeps 6-12 people on 3 season trips. It is easy to set up and won't flap in the wind like cheaper tarps.

Rafting Anyone

Perfect for the week on the water, this guy is so big it's your dinning room and kitchen in one, heck you can sleep under it if you're to lazy to set up tent. Easy to set up, and tear down, doesn't weigh too much.

MSR OutfitterWing

The MSR OutfitterWing is a quality product. After using it over a two week car camping trip in the Smokey Mountains I feel the high purchase cost can be justified or made up in longevity of use (meaning the quality in materials should stand the test). The wing proves versatile in the different ways to configure it. I would recommend that one also should purchase adjustable poles to go along with this wing. In fact MSR should recommend the same if not provide them as an option. At least four poles of at least 7 foot are required to prop the sides up to a reasonable height, otherwise the angle of the sides makes it only possible to stand in the middle. Adjustable poles allow one to then lower a side or two if the rain is heavy, providing more shelter and run-off. I enjoyed having this piece of equipment with me as you should to.

MSR really knew what they were doing when they designed this superb shelter. It's well worth the money.

A Better Fit and Less Flap

By:
June 22, 2004

Have used regular tarps for years with the ripped out grommets, pooling water, flapping in the wind, square shape that never fits the site, and really bulky.
Even with never having seen the parts before and not reading the instructions, it set up easily in 15 minutes in high wind with rain approaching and worked great without re-adjustment for a 4 day trip. Covered an extra long picnic table plus room to get 4 people in lawn chairs comfortably out of the weather beside the table. While the poles are intended to fit pins into grommets on opposite ends, the poles can be inverted and the rubber end inserted in the pocket on any of the corners when trees or a ridge pole are available and you want a bit more headroom in your setup. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to have grommets on each point instead of just loops to attach strings. Stuffed in its bag, it is about a third the size of a tarp that covers the same area. It's a bit pricy but looks like it will last well if dried after use.
