MSR's innovative BlackLite nonstick aluminum cookware allows you to bring along the comforts of home to the outdoors. BlackLite cookware melds the easy-to-clean properties of a nonstick coating with featherweight aluminum. This eliminates post-meal pot scrubbing sessions. All BlackLite sets come with a PanHandler pot lifter and a Packtowl to separate the pots. MSR has made the perfect cookware for discerning base-camp chefs.
Bottom Line: There's a black light for the backcountry?
The non-stick nature of this cookset makes life a breeze. This kit doesn't weight very much, either. There are "pak-towels" included to keep the pans from scratching each other. These pads work well for cleaning, scrubbing, and drying, also. I can fit my MSR Whisperlite stove inside this kit, and pack it all together to save a lot of space. Highly reccomended.
The non-stick feature of the pans was tested in two ways: 1) by frying two eggs without oil or butter and 2) cooking Jasmine rice (not minute rice). Neither the eggs nor the rice stick to the pans, but they do cling a little. The eggs could be flipped with the MSR spatula, but it did require a bit of prodding. The pans cleaned up with only a few gentle scrapes with the MSR spatula or spoon, followed by a wipe with the shammy. Had this test been done with my fathers aluminum uncoated pans, the clean up would be long and require much scrubbing with a wire scouring padsI can testify.
Soups, chili, and beans present no challenge whatsoever to the non-stick pans. The food sauce beaded up on the sides of the pans and cleaned up is a rinse with water and a couple of shammy wipes.
Two cups of water boil in about two minutes which is consistent with the boil time of 1.75 minutes predicted by the MSR Dragon Fly stove specs.
I first learned about this cookset when it was featured in an older issue of Shape magazine. The nonstick surface works really well & is very easy to clean. Food cooks on it just like it would on regular-sized nonstick cookware. I was impressed! Its compact size makes it easy to pack/store & I look forward to using it at the next camping trip.
I have used the Blacklite cookset on 7-8 three day long hikes. The set is light and packable. The lexan spoon and fork work well with the specially coated surface. I beat the hell out of the fry pan when I dropped my ruck-sack, but it formed back to normal with ease. It also conducts heat evenly to whatever you choose to cook.
After reviewing many different cooksets, I finally settled on MSR Blacklite's Gourmet set. At a recent campout I had the opportunity to use the set and was extremely satisfied. It worked well for breakfast (pancakes, French toast and bacon, and dinner (hot dogs and pasta in a red meat sauce),and was easily cleaned and put away. In addition the MSR spatula, spoon and strainer set were excellent, folding up after a meal and all fit easily into the small carry bag. I would recommend this set to everyone, whether a novice or experienced camper.
This set is wonderful. Many of the pre-packaged entrees will stick and burn to anything else. I've made thick chili in this without worring about cleanup. I advise getting a small non-scratch 3M sponge for cleanup.
I bought it for my long-distance motorcycle travels to replace another MSR cookset which wasn't non-stick. It's especially important to have non-stick pans when using fuel stoves because they're very hot and pretty much impossible to adjust. I also particularly like this cookset: it has an ideal combination of pots (two boiling pans + 1 frying pan), plus it's light and reasonably priced.
This is my second Blacklite Cookset. Pros: The set is fairly inexpensive, the nonstick coating works really well, and it's pretty lightweight for its size. Cons: The only problem that I've found is that the nonstick coating scratches a little too easily. I'll definitely take better care of this set.
