CAMP USA Starlight Helmet

The Camp Starlight is an ultralight, low-profile climbing helmet that's ideal for rock climbing when weight and bulk are a major concern. The Starlight helmet weighs only 10.6oz and protects against falling rocks as well as head impact in a fall. A thin polycarbonate shell covers the impact-absorbing foam interior. This Camp helmet is great for both sport and trad climbing and has headlamp clips for times when your in-a-day route takes longer than expected.

Bottom Line: When you need a lightweight, low-profile climbing helmet, reach for the Camp Starlight.

Skimo Helmet

By:
August 20, 2009

I use this helmet for rando races and backcountry skiing. Before I got this helmet, I would occasionally pack a ski helmet. But I gave that up because packing ski helmets are bulky and it's an extra effort to get them off the pack, remove your hat, buckle helmet on head. . . . Often, I would end up leaving my helmet in the pack for the descent. With the Starlight however, I can leave the helmet on all the time. In rando races, that's a requirement. In the backcounty, it's a nice feature. It is minimalist and light. It well ventilated. And it adds some protection to your head. Additional bonus, it works ok to mount bike lights -- most HID/powerful LED lights require some type of helmet to be mounted on. Think, night skiing in the backcountry.

Same question, do the approved rock climbing helmets exceed ANSI

some UIAA certified and ANSI certified helmets are certified under CE en12492 (like this one) as in the case of many Petzl sport and commercial helmets. This makes it seem as though they are compatible. But I do not work for UIAA or ANSI (or OSHA). There are slight differences in testing (8kn vs 10kn) and my understanding is that if it is certified for the workplace then it is safe for the workplace, but not vice versa. So my answer is a definite NO. Safety is important. Do not mix work and play. My quickdraws are not going to be used to tie down ladders, and I will not use my rope to tie down furniture in a truck. I will only use what is certified for use at work while I'm at work. Petzl does sell some ANSI certified helmets (the Vertex line) that have all the nice features of climbing helmets. You should be safe there. (I'm not liable for your safety)

Great helmet

By:

This helmet is pretty well designed. It is comfortable and good looking. The adjusting system is fast and simple, as it should be. I keep using it and it does not annoy me even in a warm summer, because it is well ventilated. I like it a lot.

OSHA requires hardhats used in construction to meet ANSI Z-89

OSHA requires hardhats used in construction to meet ANSI Z-89 Standard. Will rock climbing helmets meet the standards required in ANSI Z-89?

UIAA approved climbing helmets would probably exceed any ANSI Z-89 standard. If you've ever seen an OSHA approved hardhat, you'll know what I'm talking about!

This is my first helmet purchase and have only used it a couple times, so take my review for what you will. It's a great fit. Very comfortable and light. I'm one of those "fellers what gots a big noggin" and I have no complaints.
