CAMP USA Carbon Fiber Probe

The CAMP Carbon Light Probe weighs a ridiculously light 4.3 ounces, making it one of the lightest avalanche probes available. Not only does this CAMP probe shave ounces from your pack for fast-and-light backcountry trips, it has all the features you need for safe travel in avalanche terrain. This 240-centimeter carbon fiber probe includes five-centimeter marks for accurate snow-pit study and a single-pull setup.

Bottom Line: Slip the 4.3-ounce CAMP Carbon Light Probe into your pack when you need an avalanche probe but can't add much weight to your gear.

Very light, but not for everyday use

This probe is absurdly light, and has sufficient length.
Assembles easily & securely.
However, I do wonder about its long-term durability. Therefore, I take it along only late spring & early summer tours when the chance of an avy rescue is virtually nil. If you were using it on tours where you expected to be digging snowpits and/or probing for other purposes, hard to say how long it would last.

If you are carrying a probe

By:

because it's a race requirement, then this is the one. It's virtually weightless. And if you're in a race, most likely, you are not as concerned about having to probe out your partner. BUT, if you are thinking of carrying this as an everyday backcountry tool, then let's just put it this way: I would not want to be your partner.

It's a probe!

It's a probe, and it's better than not having one. The probe's deflection (angle it can be bent by snow) is somewhat higher than others you can buy, but this one fits a good niche for being inexpensive and light. The dyneema cord is a little slick, but you've got the ferrule to pull. The probe straightens out pretty easily, not best in class, but not bad at all.

If you are going to use this for some SAR or ski patrol, might want to think of a stiffer/heavier pole. If you want a light probe for the unmentionable, It'll do the job better than a pole sans basket. (Disclaimer: I've never used this in actual avy rescue, only in practice and drills and messing around) Also, the depth markings have either improved since I got mine, or the picture is a tad misleading. Mine is marked once on each pole, which is again not the best, but perfectly adequate.

CAMP Carbon Probe

Super light weight for those that are concerned about counting the grams. A knot in the cord pulled over a slit in the end of the probe is used to keep the probe tensioned. I'm not sure about the long term reliability of this method. I don't use my probe much so it end up not being an issue.
