Brunton Firestorm Stormproof Lighter

Toss the Brunton Storm Stormproof Lighter in your backpack for your next trek into the backcountry. The new Brunton Storm weighs only 1.6 ounces and is waterproof. Not only is the Storm lightweight and watertight, it also withstands winds up to 80 mph, so you won't have trouble lighting your expedition stove as the wind howls down the canyon or mountainside. Brunton says this refillable lighter is good for 30,000 ignitions. * This piezo lighter may have trouble operating at altitudes above 8,000 feet. Fuel not included.

Bottom Line: Take the compact, weatherproof Brunton Storm Lighter with you on your next backcountry journey.

its just wrong specs. brunton says its 1.6 ounces (45g). Butane might be lighter than air, if it was at standard temp/pressure, but its compressed and therefore heavier.

Poor choice

By:

I have tried a couple of these and the flame output is not impressive, and flame control is pretty poor. The reason I tried two is that I read that the fuel quality made a difference so for the second one I used Colibri premium butane, but the lighter still performed poorly.
For the same price I got a much better Colibri branded unit.

worn the paint off!

I've used this one two seasons backpacking and carry it in my pocket every day for chores that need flame around the farm. the only time it doesnt light is when its empty. mine has brass showing from where the paint has worn off, looks like an old friend. I've tried several high tech lighters and this one is the only one i've found that is worth the cash(i'm sure there are others i havent tried tho).

Not worth the bucks

Bought this on a trip and was pretty excited about it at the time as my other non-waterproof butane lighter had kicked the bucket. It gets a star for being waterproof. However for it's primary purpose of starting a fire I have to say a 10cent Bic does a better job. The first time I filled it, before it was even near full it began to leak. It leaked for 5 minutes or so and wouldn't even ignite. I can get it going now but I need to push the button 10 or more times. Once lit it tends to sputter a bit. I contacted Brunton about the problem and no response. Poor quality, poor customer service. I had the same experience with a Brunton Lantern I bought (was able to successfully return that one). Last Brunton product I will ever buy.

POS

Generally speaking I have liked Brunton gear but this thing is garbage. Like one of the other reviewers I have gone through two of these, gifting one and keeping one for myself and both of us can't believe what a poor quality product this is for the price. The flame is poor even with high quality fuel and this will not work at any kind of altitude. I routinely backpack in the Sierra Nevada's and at 6-8k feet forget it, you're much better off cupping you hand around a 2 dollar Bic. The compass is cheese and the little mirror inside is useless and both should have been left out to preserve weight and size. The "waterproof" aspect lasts only as long as you can manage not to loose the two low grade barely held in place O rings, both of which are gone from mine... along with the screw cap lid that won't hold on at all without the O ring. Putting the lanyard on the lid was also a poor design choice and the belt clip if you can call it that has no grip on it's inside and falls off incredibly easy. I would have been more satisfied with a 60 dollar block of magnesium and Brunton should be ashamed for selling this junk lighter at anything more than 10 bucks, which is what you would pay for a similar quality torch at any roadside liquor store.

Dont you just hate poeple who dont think before reviewing?

The reason it weighs 2.04 empty, and 1.6 full is that the butane is lighter then air. Thus, it makes the lighter lighter (no pun intended). The more butane in it, the lighter it is!

Grade 4 Science right there... do your research
