Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

The Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad lets you move objects with the power of your knees. Unlike the cheesy skateboarding kneepads many telemarkers use, the Telekneesis only covers what it has to, so it doesn't mess up the breathability of those expensive ski pants. Three plastic shells with closed cell foam backing are articulated to be minimalist when you're standing up straight, but come together for full protection of the patella, as well as giving your upper shin and lower thigh a little coverage. The Telekneesis's smooth beveled edges won't catch on ski pants and are low profile so they won't scoop snow or look doofy.

Bottom Line: Far, far less expensive than knee surgery and far more comfortable.

Knee pads for everything

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
February 20, 2009

I am a telemark skier and these are by far the best knee pads for the type of skiing I do. Not only do they provide amazing protection from those hidden hard objects but they bend so easily with your knee. The best thing about these is that you don't even notice they are there. I would recommend these for any snow sport enthusiast mainly because they keep your knees warm and flexible while shredding your favorite run.

Protect those Patellas!

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
October 17, 2008

Once you wear these pads you'll never go back to skiing naked-kneed! There is a reason there are so many great reviews for the Telekneesis Kneepad... they are light, warm, and extremely protective. I love the fact that they keep my knees warm on cold lift rides where your knees stick right out into the cold. i love the fact that they protect my ski-joints when I'm digging a pit, adjusting a binding, lighting a stove, gasping, puking, or inspecting snow crystals. If you are a ski mountaineer you will definitely bang your knees on rocks while you climb epic descents, so protect that shit!

These knee pads don't restrict movement at all. If you tighten the bottom strap just enough and leave the top strap just tight enough to hold them in place, after your first run you won't even notice they are there. They also keep your knees nice and warm and limber.

Knee pads are essential, and these are the best

Not much to add to the glowing reviews below from some of the most experienced and respected snow riders! What is nice for tele skiing is the upper and lower plastic which will protect above and below the knee unlike some pads. They will also make it more comfortable to pray for snow.

I hit my knee on a rock a few years ago and broke the knee pad but in a few days my knee was fine, so lucky! I dont even know their there when im skiing and they also provide warmth and a protection for kneeling in the snow. The bomb!!

disappearing knee pads

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
October 8, 2008

These knee pads are so comfortable they seem to disappear once you put them on. They are light yet provide great protection. My favorite feature is the upper portion where strap attaches. It stays above your kneecap even when in a deep knee bend, providing protection against a direct impact to the uphill knee while making a telemark turn. By far my all-time favorite knee pad. Can't say enough good things.

Never a day without 'em

By:
October 6, 2009

These kneepads fit great, keeps your knees warm, and don't restrict movement. The 3 piece shell design works great to protect your knee, the top of your shin, and the very top of your knee. I put these on in the morning and sometimes the knee pads make it to the bar. I also work on the snow, so these knee pads come in handy when kneeling at patients, digging snow pits and dog holes, or the occasional rendezvous with the top sheet of my ski. You never know when a whipper or log is going to pop up, so protect your knees.

no pad, no ski

By:
September 25, 2009

I won't go up without them, no matter what I'm doing or how I'm skiing. One of the best things about them is the elasticized upper strap - when you drop into a turn, the circumference of the thigh grows, and the straps can be restricting. Not with these pads. In fact, I wear mine loosely strapped, and then wrap a few layers of duct tape around my leg at the bottom of the pad, on the outside of my pants. The tape keeps the pad in place, straps keep it centered, and i get much less wear on my patella over the course of the day. Eliminates some post-ski ache. See you on the hill.

awesome

By:
January 9, 2009

never had kneepads before, never thought i'd need them. once i used these, i will never go boarding without them again.

i usually don't like sitting on my butt on a hill, because a) i don't want to get nailed by somebody crashing down the hill w/o seeing it coming; and b) i usually look up the hill to see if my slower friends are coming down. therefore, i rest on my knees, and these are worth their price for that use alone - tough yet comfortable.

the reason they went above and beyond is because they saved my knees when i crashed in this huge ice patch i didn't see. i would definitely have been out of commission for at least a week if it wasn't for these pads.

with all due respect to other reviewers' sensitive skin, i have strapped these directly to my bare leg w/o any problems...;)

pros:
lightweight, flexible, good coverage, keeps knees protected and WARM.

cons:
vinyl strap is a little uncomfortable when squatting, i make sure it's always on the bottom and keep it loose.

These would work well, they are low profile enough to fit under pants and are very comfortable.------------I would just say that at least when skiing, they chafe if you don't have long underwear under them. One warm-weather solution I used was to take old, light long undies or knee socks, cut them off, and then just pad the knee.

Can't ski without 'em

By:
October 8, 2008

After using these for three years, I feel really vulnerable if I'm ever caught without them. They have taken some massive hits, from jump-turning onto a rock to slamming my knee on my ski landing jumps in a tele stance. I have really tall boots as well, and there is no pinching or overlap to worry about. The only note I would make is that you have to wear long underwear or something under them or you get some painful chafing where the strap runs over the back of the knee. Otherwise, you forget you're wearing them till you get bashed in the knee, then they're a godsend.

Wear 'em

By:
July 31, 2009

THE BEST kneepads for telemarking. The straps are attached to parts of the pad that are articulated (above and below the main pad), with a static lower strap to cinch down on the calf and an elastic upper strap to cinch down on the thigh--the result is that the pad stays put even when you walk, climb, ski, dig, dance...whatever you might do while wearing knee pads. I was wearing these when I was in a head-on car crash (two totalled vehicles), and although my knees were pushed up against the dashboard, no bruises or broken bones! (this may have had something to do with the safety features of the brand-new car I was in, but I'll give the kneepads some credit too)

Great Knee Pads

By:
November 17, 2008

At first when I got these, I thought they were awfully skinny to protect my knees. But they do a great job. I can fit them under my snowboard pants (I use them for snowboarding) and I barely notice them. Whenever I fall, they are right there. Only had them slip off one time after a long sidewards slide down the slopes, but that was well after the point of impact.

Haven't done anything that I think could have damaged my knees yet, but it's great being able to get up immediately from a spill.

Perfect Pads for the Glades

Very light, very comfy, very stable (no slipping), very unobtrusive overall.Hint (from my tele friend): put them *over* your long underwear but *underneath* your Schoeller pants. (Otherwise, too much snow gets into them.)

These pads practically disappear when you have them on, you don't notice them at all until you're on your knees on the ice and suddenly realize that you a)didn't get hurt and b)can't even feel the cold through them. I sit on my knees now instead of my arse when I'm waiting around on the slopes. One tip - they don't tell you that you need to put the elastic on your thigh and the nylon on your calf. They're not so comfy if you wear them backwards.

After taking a hard hit to my patella (kneecap) from my ski binding I spent 3 previous seasons with strap on knee pads from Lowes and although they did the trick protecting my knees from the occasional impact with the terrain during tele turns I really didn't realize how much better this product could be. The Telekneesis pads strap on, dont shift at all, have no uncomfortable pressure on the knee cap, and fit under pants with minimal bulk. I highly recommend them.

Peace of mind

By:
January 19, 2005

Been skiing in those kneepads 4 days at Snowcreek ski area in Missouri and 4 days in Keystone, Colorado by now. The construction of the buckles make it easy to put the pads on and take them off. The pads are lightweight and not bulky, stays in place well, I mean, it doesn't unfasten or slide down. Did not constrain either. I'm wearing them over the base layer pants under Arc'teryx Theta SK ski pants. I did not have any real big falls with a potential impact to knees, but those pads gave me peace of mind, comparing to several past season when I had falls like that. I have been skiing for 15 years now, and I don't fall often, but when I do, it hurts. Bought a helmet and a crash pad shorts as well. Cheaper than American doctors, you know.

Awesomeness on my Knees

By:
March 18, 2009

If my knees could talk, it would say "You're Awesome". Because it is that awesome. It is so awesome that the definition of the word was defined by this product.

Any-who, the kneepads does a spectacular job at preventing my knees from exploding from the awesomeness of my riding. It is rather comfortable with liners on, however it is a bit torturous without (especially when bending your knees while taking a big deuce). But if you can stand through having elastic straps cutting circulation off your bare skin, you are cool in my book.

Most of the time, I don't even realize I'm wearing them. They are so versatile that I wear them everyday to school, to the supermarket and even wedding receptions. You never know when someone might take a hatchet or a chainsaw and cut up your knees, but when it does happen, you will be more than prepared.

It's like being Iron Man... only on your knees though. If someone shot you, you'd probably be seriously injured (unless they shot you in the knees).

I have searched for the ultimate knee pad and this is it. I started wearing them last season and I can not ride with out them. I love the protection and warmth they give my knees.

Different use, same success

Not a backcountry skiier, but I've been taking up a bastard version of roller skiing called skiking and wanted some lightweight, easy to put on, stay-in-place, protection for my inevitable falls. Had my first hard fall yesterday and the pads took a good whack. Did not feel a thing so I rate them a major success. They are just there when you need them and totally unnoticed when you don't. Excellent.

Essential Gear

These are essential telemark gear. You barely feel them when they are on, and after tagging a buried tree-stump with my right knee during a turn, I can attest to their durability and protective qualities. I never tele without them.

Tele-need these pads!

One of the most important pieces or gear for any free-heeler. These pads fit nicely under most pants and no one will know they are there. You will, however, know they are there when you hit that unexpected stump or rock and it deflects nicely off the pad. They stay in place and don't itch even when strapped on my bare skin with no baselayer. Lay down deep turns with confidence with these on!

This is the best knee pad you can buy out there. It stays in place and it protects not only your knee but above the knee and below. The design also creates a pocket for you knee to flex into. You don't even feel it when you wear it. I dare you to find a better knee pad out there.

saving grace for my patella

These pads are sweet for keeping your knees safe, and in good working order when you ski the ugly chop, and unpredictable snow. They're surprisingly not cumbersome at all, and I barely notice I'm wearing them.
